View Full Version : BtS causes Version Mismatch in MP + Workaround

Title says it.

I found this out yesterday and had to reinstall the whole Civ 4 (except BtS) to resolve the issue and play my turn in the Rule the World Pitboss.

IglooDude got responses on a thread on that other side that Vanilla and Warlords are autopatched by the BtS installer. No patching by BtS has been announced btw.

This most likely means that if you install BtS you won't be able to play your Pitbosses because of the version mismatch.

I do not think there will be any suppport until after official release dates. [sad]

The work around is a dual install. It basically comes down to copying your existing Civ 4 install (Vanilla plus Warlords about 2 GB) prior to installing BtS:

1) Create a new directory in Program Files. It could be anywhere but this is a logical place. Let's call it Civ4copy in this How-to.

2) Copy / paste directory Sid Meier's Civilization 4 from Firaxis Games to Civ4copy

3) Basically you could start the Civ4copy version from the dir now but it is more convenient to create a dedicated Desktop Icon. Go to your Desktop and look for the Icon that launches your Civ 4 versions. Copy / paste one of these icons. Rightclick the new icon and in the Target box look for \Firaxis Games\ and replace this with \Civ4copy\. In my case I changed "E:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Civ4Warlords.exe" to "E:\Program Files\Civ4copy\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Civ4Warlords.exe". Repeat for the other icon.

4) Test if it works. A good test is to rename the .exe files in the Firaxis Games folder then launch with your new icons. Don't forget to rename them back correctly after testing!

5) Install BtS.

Patching with the mechanism 2k has been using so far will NOT patch the copy you created. We are using this to our advantage now but it might be a limitation in the future. I really hope they got their act together by that time.

Both installs will use the same directories and files in the My Games section. As fas as I've tested now there wasn't a need to create duplicates there but this might change of course.

Beam out.

EDIT: There appear to be issues with the Warlords 2.1.3 patch even without BtS. Imo making the dual install and play MP from the copied version allows for both uninterrupted MP, playing BtS and making the patches work on your gear. In other words double install and a couple of puzzles, looking at what is in BtS looks very promising so I say worth the effort.

Is it possible to duel-install Civ4 like we used to for various versions of Civ 3 and C3C when they were going thru the patching process?

I already started that path, thanks for the effort grahamian!

For some reason I can't connect to the host atm (RtW). But I'm gonna test now what the BtS buggar install does with the copy.

Just checked that one for you beam, me either- i can connect but not finish connecting to the host.

So with a copy of the original install made and BtS installed I can start 2 different versions of Warlords. :) But we can only be 100% sure if we can go thru a full connection cycle with the host.

according to alexman @ the other site (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5700492#post5700492) (an apparent insider) the patches were intended to be release simultaneous with the BtS release, but due to miscommunication they were not.

LMAO

Gamecopyworld already has a no-CD patch for the Vanilla .exe. The Firaxis part of BtS may be very good but 2k's as distributor is a joke. A very bad joke. Inclding the enforced silence prior to release. [assw] [uglyham] [finger]

[dance] I could do a normal cycle thru Klammi's Pitboss where I am occasionally subbing for BC. Going to update the first post now with a how to. :)

Rule the World also positively tested with the dual install. :)

Hm, somehow I doubt that workaround is going to work with Vista.

Well i imagine someone will have made an unnoficial patch somewhere by then but alexman says it should be out soon. Seeing as the game is officially out soon i imagine they'll let the patches out as well.

looks like all past pbems are fooked.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5704475&postcount=25

unless people go to all this trouble every pbem.

Robboo
20-07-2007, 15:43
thats really not that much trouble...its just an open and reload the save.

BCLG100
20-07-2007, 16:41
no it is because it means that the people who made the saves have to keep a dual install for when they're asked to do so.

The standalone patches are available at http://www.firaxis.com/support/

So I suppose I'll have a go at CivIVor: Warlords pitboss first...

There's no warlords patch.

But make your dual install first. ;)

I'm pretty sure vista won't let me make a dual install.

Why are you so sure? Did you try?

I've worked on Vista on my parents new computer and the file structure is very similar to XP although naming conventions are a bit different. And I vaguely recall you also have an XP computer. ;)

Oh yeah, but that one is tucked away safely in my basement. Vista has this strange thing with registering programs. I don't know, actually. But I don't see a reason why I should make a DL to begin with: there's an official patch, so why shouldn't matrix update his server with it?

Beam

Read this first: http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4574

And the dual install basically involves copy/paste. I assume you can do this in Vista without registering? Maybe one of the ppl using Vista can help?

Apparantly there have been reports of the patch now patching the dual install (i assume this was just people doing it wrong) but to be safe id reccomend zipping it. It's not that much extra time.

I just did it exactly according to Beam's instructions above, and the patch only upgraded the original installation.

And by the way Beam thanks for the instructions, I've pointed several people at it. You might want to amend with the DX10 download though.

So i dual Installed last night, (need both civ4 and warlords to finish mtdg/pbems and stuff), everything was working fine, could use all 4 quite happily. (Patched up also!)

Then this morning i went to play my regular pitboss turns and for some reason only vanilla will load. I try loading Warlords but it says the disk cannot be found, so i go to my computer and it is there, i click on it and up pops the 'play, readme, exit' screen' If i click play then the same happens and i'm told that the disk can no longer be found. This happens on both the unpatched and patched game, any ideas?

did it exactly the way you said beam except install patch and not install BtS.

bc... sounds like maybe a shortcut directing you to the wrong thing?

Well thats what i thought but i went in through programs etc and starting it that way but the same happened.

Argggg!!!! i just reinstalled warlords and its still not working!

BCLG100
22-07-2007, 15:52
Well it just goes from better to better, i uninstalled everything. Now the bastarding vannilla civ4 wont install, if its not a DL error its a 'data cab:2' one!

22-07-2007, 16:07
ok it means my civ4 cd= fucked. Guess that means i have to shell out another twenty quid for another one!

try cleaning it. look for smudge marks or other gunk. I've had the same problem with C3C and I fixed it by cleaning it.

22-07-2007, 17:14
oh its fucked, scratched to buggery but it was playing the games so i hoped it would allow me to reinstall.

I have the cd not found problems all the time with vanilla, I couldn't play at all until deoderant was invented. Last I looked there was no deoderant for the new Warlords patch though. But if you've uninstalled, deoderant wont help anyway :(

That is a disturbing news. I do have a disk but my DVD drive is fucked up.
