Open thread for discussion on this game, obviously. [crazyeye]

I'll close the thread in the opponent finding forum, so prevent clutter there. The game is already started so we don't need to find any opponents anyway...

Discuss... :)

I'll start... :)

I just founded buddhism. How many of you were also shooting for that? Aztecs or Arabs perhaps?

It isn't fixed, AFAIK.

Then everyone should be aware that to get the free tech from the oracle you have to be logged into the game when the turn it is built starts otherwise you miss out.

Just a heads-up, Stapel will be taking over for me permanently in this game in a week or so. I've filled him in on the diplo circumstances (what little there is of it) and he has agreed to honor existing agreements or at least renegotiate them rather than break them unilaterally.

No particular reason, just that Stapel's enthusiasm is appealing and I gotta say that once I got my PC going again and all the other problems past me, I found myself thinking "man this is a bit annoying to be in this many games again". I'm in seven at the moment, not counting the original CivIVor OT that at some point we have to finish, along with another four or five 1v1 or 3forall PBEMs, so if Stapel is looking to get into it (particularly given that it is still very early in the Klammi game), so much the better.

I simply think civ is not the game where one should deceive opponents with the content of PMs or chats. Fact is that I was declared war upon, while being in longer trem peace deal negotiation.

Many of you might say: Hey, as long as no deal was formerly excepted by both sides, all is allowed. I happen to think otherwise. If you plan to go to war (and actually do so), don't send PMs with detailed long term issues. And most certainly don't send PMs that it is talking so long, beacuse of work.... That's simply cowardly treacherous. Simply say you are not interested in a peace deal.

There are other games, like diplomacy, that are perfectlty suitable for such tricks.

BCLG100
07-06-2007, 21:57

Robboo
07-06-2007, 22:31
OK. Who contacted who? If you contacted him and he replied..."let me think on it " or "i will send an answer soon." I think he answered. If he contacted you and you never replied...he is within his right to attack since your lack of reply implies that you dont care.( sorta the refuses to talk option in civ)

NOW...if you and he were in active negotiations and things were being discussed then perhaps he is at fault but without seeing the negotiations or knowing who it is.. I wont pass judgement.

killercane
07-06-2007, 22:40
Its just a game, and diplomacy is part of it. Certainly no one wants you to quit, be mad, hold a grudge, or ruin your gameplay experience. The failure to get the other party to sign onto the dotted line is not even close to cheating though. If they break an agreement though, thats another story, and you can get them back in other games in other ways. What comes around goes around.

Frankly, I have tons of MP experience. However, I usually check up front if we are going to play a high level diplo game, where deception is a feature of the game, or if there is some sort of honourable code. It is my opinion that civ is hardly suited for high-end diplomacy, mostly because the game has so many other things to offer.

Well, don't bother too much. I'm just a bit disappointed that we don't play according to what I thought were standard CDZ codes. Probably just me.

Beam
08-06-2007, 20:26
Although I am not in this game, most players in this one also are in the Rule the World Pitboss AND are CDZ regulars (but not all) so imo it makes sense to comment about the issue Stapel rises.

One of the very standard CDZ codes always has been to play sportsmenlike in CDZ PBEMs and MPs. This includes respecting treaties to its intention and no cheating among other things. The whole idea is the player managing the game itself best gets the rewards, not the one best in backstabbing and treason. Also in my experience floating away from this may result in those minor initial issues like not or only partly paying agreed gpt for a resource for example right up to making a fake alliance and invading your partner unprepared. All of this and everything in between really spoils my fun in the game.

I think neither me or Stapel are naieve or don't know MP games played elsewhere follow these principles.

Look at it this way. Cut out the crap and look at the many in-game options Civ offers to beat your oppononents. Including in-game deception.

My 2 cents.

Well I dont know the content of said discussions between Robi and Stapel, but from what I know it looks like pretty standard play, and frankly I dont see what the issue is.

Stapel is sandwiched between Robi and I, and thus in a precarious situation. He committed his units towards me, without getting a treaty with Robi on his backside. This is why I wanted to know diplomatic relations between the two and encouraged Robi to attack while I distracted Stapel. If I have a guy to my back that I dont have a peace deal with, why send all my troops to the other side of my lands? I offered Stapel peace but he was hell bent on war so now he has what he wants.

Killercane, Robi, and Stapel are all touching borders. Stapel did what he had to do to better his position, Killercane did what he had to do to stay in his position, and Robi did what every red blooded Amer....er...Aussie would have done. Exploit the situation to get a bigger foothold on things. Who knows, maybe a second Southern Alliance will forme....lol In short, if your touching borders at the beginning of the game....get big stick and whack other guy.

To make a few things clear, i agree that you should not cheat or break deals that were made.

I did string Stapel along a bit in discussions but did not make a deal. Personally i was quite surprised he hadn't caught on given the length of time.

There are many way to trick your opponent both through game play and diplomacy and i don't see the difference between the two.

I did. And the cease fire was appreciated. We are now resuming hostilities....

On a general note: I am a bit shocked to see that I was converted to AI. I gave notice a few days before I had to leave and I even tried to get a replacement, so I really fail to see the need to convert me to AI, especially with me being at war with BCLG (who graciously ceased hostilities with me... [goodjob]).
Now the AI completely fucked up the build queue I had set and started building a fucking worker... :( Which essentially leaves me really light on units to try and slow BCLG down for a few turns...

Not a nice way to end this game, IMHO...

Oh yeah guys, me and rob=warring, you've been waiting for it since the first 18 player pitboss game!

Robboo
06-07-2007, 05:40
And so have I, BC. Waiting for you since teh 18 player game.

You have chosen the wrong time. The blood of your troops will fertilize my fields. Guys...this game will slow down now. I will not make a move and allow any time for him to counter in the same turn. I also will not log in just to see where you went. I know how you play BC...and this gives me an advantage by stopping you from adjusting unmoved units.

And to think I traded you copper to fight Darkness...looks like I backed the wrong civ yet again. Good tactic too...stop me form building axes while you do. Not complaining just slick move. Also..if you guys let him kill me..none of you individually can beat him. Those who played in the 18 player game know that I speak the truth. I KNOW one of you is helping him...just waiting for that set of cards to be played. BC is the best player left in this game....IMHO.

Mauer...BC answered...I need to actually move. I tried to stay in the game but due to a difference of opinion between us, BC has decided to kill me off. I offered to join him and his ally, I offered 3 cites...BUT he said "Sorry I rather have a larger CIV."

I am open to negotiations at any time but I wont waste my time or his with PMs that wont lead anywhere. I wont be home for another few hours so i cant press enter right now. And I am fighting so I havent given up. I just wont leave "aged" cottages for him.

Well that was wierd. The game kicked me out halfway through taking my turn then i couldn't get back in for an hour even though the game was working[???]

I was able to eventually get in and finish my turn so its upto robboo now

robi..its done that to me a couple of times.

played BC. so you should be waiting on me for after work in about 12 hours. The game was going fasster prior to my war simply because I was double moving.

killercane..I may advise you also but I cant promise not to kill you in civor.

THe game is going pretty fast anyway, the past few days we have been doing 2 turns within a 24hr period which is great given the diversity of timezones

Well your stack is diminishing, Ive figured out a way to connect some resources, my cultural defense is going up to 60%, and I still have some lead in my pencil yet! War chariots can pop up from anywhere...

My grandpa said he's still got lead in his pencil too. Don't think he was quite referencing the same thing as you though.

explain mauer? You can PM me...I cant seem to chat in game since I am a vassal...Didnt know that. So all my offers to BC cant go throught.

Either hurry and kill me or declare peace...either way would speed up the game so i can play my turns when ever instead of having to wait.

Rob a DM clause means you can't do anything before i do- that includes adding promotions. It's no massive deal just means i get that city one turn later than i would have just annoying.

Robboo
18-07-2007, 01:30
I didnt think adding promotions was a move. Hence why I asked about your definition which involved "movement" .Annoying is giving someone copper(traded for gold) for 10 plus turns while they fight and then waiting for them to return from a trip to discuss the future relations to find out they have been planning your demise the whole time...thats annoying.

Oh and if you think that promotion was annoying wait to you see the little surprise have for you in the next few turns and thats without doing a DM. I wont go down easy.

I've been under the impression that a no DM rule meant that you literally didn't do anything on the new turn until the other person had finished their turn. Which is why I have a hard time understanding the not finishing your turn thing. According to my understanding, which could be flawed I'll readily admit, a no DM should be Player A takes a turn, Player B takes a counter turn...etc, etc, etc...

Ok rob, at least i now have something to bring up every five minutes when something doesn't go my way.

I can only imagine your refferring to your keshiks and chariots circling around as you have next to nothing else.

Robboo

mauer.. I end turn 5. Then BC has to play on turn 6 before I can play on turn 6. If I press enter, I then dont get to move.

BC.. I am only stating facts. EVERY single thing I said in that last post was a fact. I asked for your specific definition and you stated "movement" not every single action. I follow all my agreements to the exact letter. And no thats not the surprise since someone is giving you my troop locations...I have to give them something to watch.

Hey Klammi, sorry I didnt take my turn in time, I have dysentery or something. 2 things, I rolled over the turn and went again and took Lahore (after seeing that you had played after the 12 hour DM limit). If this is not ok we can restart I just figured it was more advantageous for you not to lose more units, ie the lb and archer that are coming up.

2nd thing is I kept getting an Out of Sync message with the server so I dont know even if the turn went through. It was a weird red message that popped up and was difficult to see requesting someone to reconnect? Anyone know what this is?

Sorry, Casey, I have to rollback the game. We said no double moves, and thats just what you did. You had been the last movin at 580 and did captured my city in 600 after 3 mins. Please give me at least 12 hours to move after you did your turn in war time.

killercane
18-07-2007, 23:14
My bad, I was unsure what to do and my understanding was a rollback isnt hard to do or would inconvenience anyone. In this instance, waiting for you to move benefits me (and its convenient) so I didnt think you would mind (in other words, I dont benefit from the double move). Also the game would move faster. So sorry if I held the game up but that was my thinking.

I think Simon is the only one who has to redo their turn. And for the record, I came out immensely better the second time as I didnt have a unit die at 98% odds this time around.
