W00t, my first Civ IV PBEM Spoiler! [charge] Continents vs. krys who choose Victoria as leader which required some thinking to decide for Huayna Capac. Basically for traits (Fin to keep up in tech race and Aggr for Combat I and some serious fighting). The Red Coat is a mighty UU krys has and once he got them I need to be prepared. The Quecha UU for the Inca isn't worth shit at that time but otoh does well against most barbs early game so takes away pressure from having Arch. or bronze and in a testgame on Monarch couple of those eliminated nearby Rome avoiding the evil Praetorians. :) Starting with Myst. is inviting for founding a religion but otoh wastes 12 turns of research, gives little good imo and usually pisses off neighbours. So in terms of religion the plan is to go with the flow. Then I've been reading some on that other site about FE, SE, CE etc but afaik a lot if this depends on available tiles. Let's see.

We need a mapmaker first, you will get nice spoilers in return! [please]

Turn 2: My first CiV PBEM has started! [dance]

Nice start imo, lots of fresh water, 3 health and 2 happiness sources visible. Plan is Quecha > worker and AH > Mining. There isn't a lot the worker can do right now.

I'd also recommend getting pottery ASAP. WIth those floodplains and the Inca financial trait Cuzco could quickly become a research powerhouse...

Vanilla, why you ask?

@Darkness, pottery will be in the queue soon. I've been thinking about the FE option but with this amount of food I think I can mix with CE in this city.

Because in warlords Capac gets the terrace which is a very awesome Ub, was just curious if you were going to be able to use it :)- would have been yet another excuse to get pottery early :)

Turn 52:

Time for an update. Not because something particular happened but for the record.

BW just came in and copper is in the fat cross [dance]. The way tiles have been worked so far is getting a settler and a lib asap. The cap then will be assigned two Scientists and floodplains cottaged apart from connecting the copper. Next build in the cap is a settler and since I do not really need IW atm next tech will be Maths. Good for chopping and access to some more nice techs.

Civs on my piece of heaven are Genghis, Nap and Mansa. Imo it is best to stay friends with Mansa who also founded Hinduism.

krys made some amazing jumps in the score, not sure what caused this. Hut popping maybe?

Turn 115:

5 cities now and most resources are connected except for iron and horses which both are close. I've limited # of cities to 5 until now cause there is little pressure atm from the neighbours but soon I'll add another 2 or 3 cities. As Curr. is in and a # of cottages well developed corruption of extra cities is easier to compensate now. The neighbours aren't much help techwise, only Nap has Metal Casting and doesn't want to trade, all three lack curr., calendar and alphabet + an early reli tech. Specially the mongols are a piece of shit.

Compass is just completed and I'm pondering to go either for Optics / Astro asap or mix CoL / CS in as well.

Hinduism has spread in my cap and since it is also with Nap and Mansa I made the switch.

The 100 point gap at first concerned me a bit but it is more or less stable now. krys just build 99% sure the Great Lib however so he gets 2 free scientists. [aargh]

Turn 159 / 160

Main event prior to these turns was that my usual hobby of letting the AI doing the hard work of capturing barb cities was disrupted by the most evil (but also most pathetic) Mongolian who had a wan<s>k</s>dering at the city when the less pathetic Mansa was doing his hard work. But no prob for an waiting Axe to declare war > raze. And build a city tile next cause those barbs usually build on the wrong spot.

Turn 159 brought one of the key techs this game imo.

In SP I usually do the Liberalism thingie (choose Astro or Nat., depends on the situation) but I think PBEM works different so hence the direct path. But this is my first CiV PBEM so I could be totally wrong.

Here is what the first Caravel same turn:

Borders have a light color so it could be Vicky. As can be seen in the scores in the same pic krys is WAY ahead of me and imo I'm doing reasonably well compared with the AI on my own turf. Otoh if they had done a bit more work on say research I could have traded for Feud instead of starting research myself [aargh]. No, instead Nap and Mansa are fighting each other.

Bit more on krys and what I know / dunno. First of all his cap is fucking large:

That unknown city size 19 is his cap. Because of his traits he has +3 in health, I can grow Breda 13 > 14 max still healthy. So an easy explantion is he got an extra health resource plus an improvement for that resource. Or he already has Guilds and build a Grocer which is worse. Or even worse is he chopped forests near his cap already and I need my 4 forests near the cap badly!

I also think his high score for a large part comes from this large cap but my understanding of Score isn't good enough to be sure.

Finally Demographics.

To be honest all 4 areas where I am 2nd concern me most and it would be even more of krys appears to be 1st both in GNP and MFG. But who knows, I guess we will be in contact soon and get a clearer picture of the situation.

In terms of strategy I expect to have some war with Nap before turn 200 but more important is to create some havoc on krys before he gets his Redcoats. So the techpath from here on goes to Chemistry asap.

Turn 160

The Caravel meets krys!.

He has more techs I have so that's another part of the score gap. Paper to me is an indication of Liberalism run. Drama use Lib for Nat (even more he hasn't Optics yet!) and go for MilTrad. Number of cities we have is the same atm. And we have about the same traits except for krys using Serfdom and me using Caste System (leveling city growth and having unlimited specialists in some areas is nice :)).

Turn 189:

Look at the turnnumbers and the datesand you guessed it right. This game goes at a steady speed of one turn a day. Main thing discovered can be seen on the map of the world (got paper (2 turn thing for an impression of tech speed), can trade for a map with the other continent but need a good deal).

Both krys E and W coastline also have Greek cities in them. The Greek core is just S of the caravel on the E coast and Greece also has cities on the W coast. So it could very well be krys and Alex have some sort of "mixed" empire which means long supply lines. The cities I can see the names of are the LAST 4 he built. One can't be sure of course but an expedetion force could land there and attack without much resistance.

Although I'm pretty happy with my empire krys does a better job in his. More pop, some wonders, 4 techs over me afaik (Divine Right, Banking, Education, PP) where I just have 1 over him (Chem).

Demographics better than it was but I'd really like it better. Was 2 in GNP for most of the time which is 3rd, otoh pop has catched up nicely.

Mansa and Nap are still at war with each other and the units I see in Naps cities are not quite up to date and he is annoyed with me. So the current plan is to give grens and cannons bit of training in France meantime building drydocks and associated stuff and do an expedition to the land of the Evening Sun. [charge]
