well I'm a glutton for punishment. I've started another PBEM with one of the better MP civ4 players. So Simon leave now

Game specifics.
I am POTUS Roosevelt
Simon is Germany
more details later.

I plan on putting all decisions in here to get feedback on why I suck so bad. I have to be making a bad decision somewhere so any help would be appreciated.

I have the first turn played, but I was in a rush this morning so I emailed myself @ work the pictures from home. So once they get here after going through France, I'll post them... the start is rather bleak, but I think that it's doable.

[u]Current Actions </u>

- working the corn for speedy growth
- researching mining due to the plentiful forests around me.
- building a warrior for protection
- warrior will head south since deserts are most of the time in the middle of the map. I should be able to find someone on the other side.

Ideas, suggestions?

OK first off its BC...Be aware of his early horse rush via chariots or HA.

looks like there is a water body to your NW. Could be a lake or you may be in a choke point. That should effect how you garrison your cities. I dont see any great city sites except near the fish..and that isnt that good. I assume you are going to get that hut up that way towards the fish.

Dont worry about your power number being so low..the others are due to starting techs. In fact using Robi D's power graph article, you could have a good idea who you are playign against other than Simon.( assuming no one popped a warrior or tech).

i suck as much as you...so do opposite of what I tell you. :)

so leave the hut [confused]??

I actually did move the warrior south this turn. I was more interested in busting fog than goodie huts. In the past I really haven't gotten much from them so I'm not keen on going out of my way to pop them. But I could always change my mind....

I'd wonder up that way and pop it. You will want to have all those single black squares cleaned before copper. They seem to attrack metals in my games...

I have had little success with huts in head to head games also. Never a troop, always gold.

I've met Cyrus after last turn... this turn I popped that hut and I'm glad that I did.. I got hunting out of it and after I ended my turn, I got mining. So My free tech is half-way concealed from Simon. :D

I guess your first mistake might have been your leader choice (or was it random?)

Industrious will help you only if your are going for some wonders which might not be the best choice on a tiny pangaea.
Organized might be helpful, but once you are so big that it really helps you, that game should be won anyway...

Anyway...it will feel much better then beating him to the ground...

You should build a worker after that warrior.
Maybe you should go for MC pretty early (but onl if your cities are safe) cause those half-priced forges can give you a boost then.

thanks for the advise ynnek... I honestly don't know what I'm doing and make decisions as they come up in civ4 instead of anticipating situations, which I know is bad juju if you intend on winning the game

The entire game is random so I didn't have a choice.

warrior back to the SW for exploration or go explore the tundra in the north?

I sent my scouting warrior to the SE and met up with Simon's scout. I declared war and killed him.

REserach front... I'm 1 or 2 away from BW. what should I go for next? I'm thinking AH... but archery might be nice too.

I actually started the wheel. But I also revolted to slavery. So no research lost except the overflow. So if someone could throw me a bone here,....

It looks like the area to the south is a little secluded. Also there is copper just south on the south-western corner of the lake to my south. So that might be my first city.

my capital is pop 2, the 2 AI have a pop 3capital and Simon has a pop 4. I honestly don't know how he gets high pop at the beginning of games. Granted that I'm working on a worker currently. So that has impeded me, but in another game, he had his capital up to pop 5 while the rest (all humans) only had pop3. He might suck in Hattrick, but he excels at reporducing ;)

I just popped archery from a hut that was almost popped by a Cyrus scout. oh well :D

Simon likes running a specialist economy so he stresses food production. You will rarely see him build cottages.

One suggestion....since you will most likely not be trading those spices...consider either cottages or farming one or 2 of them instead of waiting to plantations. I fyou post some clearer screen shots we could give advice on cities. BUT if the copper city you mention is immediately next to your capital...( fat crosses touch or overlap) then its a good site. just make sure it has enough food to work the copper and also make sure the copper is in the working tiles from the moment you settle. Its worth having a few tiles overlap if you get to use the copper without a border expansion.

Does Simon know where you are at or did you kill his scout far away form your area? Build an extra garrison and make sure you protect your workers/settlers. If he knows where you are at. (That lesson I think you learned in our game 2vs2 baldies)

Tubby Rower
15-03-2007, 17:01
you would think that I learned it, but I've lost two cities and a worker [lol]

I don't think that he saw my borders although he was mighty close to viewing them.... So he might think that I'm further away. I'll attempt to get a full screenshot up tonite

check the food there before you settle make sure you arent building a city max food for 2 or 3...unless you are just doing for teh copper.

ok.. a little update. Simon is ahead by around 120 points. cyrus is getting big. I'm going for alpha (still on writing now) to trade with the 2 AI. I hope that I can get there before anyone else does. I settled the horses that showed up in the NE on the grassland by the tundra. I have another settler going to settle 1 W of the wheat in the north. My borders expanded to get the copper which had a worker there to promptly start mining. I'll see if I can remember to take a picture or two next time I'm in the game

I'm a bit surprised Simons so far ahead on points given your popped techs.

As far your traits goes, they are more useful then most people give them credit. I had FDR in a pbem against Robboo a while back. Being Industrious on a small map means you can sneak a wonder in where you otherwise wouldn't. Pyramids is a good one to try to get, and organised is great because you can expand further and faster then the other without worrying about maintenance so don't be scared to plant a couple more cities

What does Cyrus think about Simon? You thinking about rolling on Cyrus at all, before Simon does?

Tubby Rower
23-05-2007, 15:35
Everyone is cautious with everyone else, except Simon is furious with me. Both other civs have OB with Simon which bodes not too good for me getting to Alpha first. :(

Ah, just noticed you were already at war with Simon. Don't worry too much, I'm getting me behind spanked by him as well.

Tubby Rower
23-05-2007, 16:40
at least he's pleasant while trouncing you. I always get "Enjoyness" as the message with each save [lol]

mauer
23-05-2007, 16:55
[lol] True, I get "enjoyness" as well. Although he added to it last time "That's quite a battlefield scene unfolding on your capital."

Tubby Rower
17-06-2007, 23:04
Simon has thrown a warrior at me whihc I dispatched well and he had no opportunity to pillage anything. I'm just a few turns away from Alpha which whoever gets to first should have the upper hand.

Unfortnuately even though Simon has only 2 cities compared to my 3 and I have more pop... he has a gold hill next to his capital. which probably dooms my chances to beat him to Alpha. :(

Tubby Rower
22-08-2007, 14:34
well I think that Simon has given up on this game. Not that Mauer killed me in our other game, I might email him to get this going again. Simon screwed up by not trading aggressively with the AI. I was able to get Alpha a couple of turns after Simon and still got up to speed on techs. :D
