WooOOOooOt

we're finally underway.

Here (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3844) is the thread where this was started if you care to read it.

Basically each player has 2 leaders from the same civ. except IglooDude and he has Native American civs (as a reward for acquiring a hosting computer :D Thanks ID)

Here is the roster

America (George & Roosevelt) - Robboo
China (Mao & Qin) - Socraynnek
England (Vicky & Elizabeth) - barbu1977
France (Louis & Nappy) - krysABunchOfLetters
Germany (Bismark & Freddy) - Darkness
India (Asoka & Ghandi) - Robi D
Mongolia (Kublai & Ghengis) - BCLG3001
Russia (Pedro & Cathy) - Tubby
Incans and Aztecs - IglooDude

I'll get Civstats going as soon as we have a couple reports of the game working properly.

tubby dont forget to post a picture of your capital so we can all see our summer retreats

Tubby Rower
14-11-2006, 18:36
Which capital? I think that I might name mine after random drinks made with vodka [:p]

oh and I need the city called Uranus so that Buddhism can spread to Uranus [lol]

BCLG100
14-11-2006, 18:43
you liked that one huh? :D

im not sure what to name mine this time, i think i may go for interesting places to spread....

Socrates
14-11-2006, 18:48
What is CivStats ?

I think I'll also name my cities for once. And fact is, we almost (or all ?) have the same civ twice, which means there is redundancy here, not sure how the game copes with it.

BCLG100
14-11-2006, 18:50
Civstats is basically a program that runs alongside pitboss that ID sets up made by some fella at cfc which allows you to check on the internet how long left on each turn there is without actually going through the hassle of logging in and looking for yourself :)

Tubby Rower
14-11-2006, 19:23
http://www.civstats.com/ is the site. You can register and then you can actually conduct diplomacy there if you don't have an email address or PM location. It will also give you information available to everyone in game such as when people log in and out, when people's scores increase or decrease, when someone is eliminated, etc.

IglooDude

Looks like Darkness just finished both his civs' turns. [coool]

Darkness
14-11-2006, 20:37
OK, I logged on just fine for both my civs, but when I had moved all my units I didn't get the "press enter for next turn" announcement on the bottom of my screen (for both civs).

So you just logged out?

Odd, given that the pitboss admin panel is showing the asterisk next to both your civs, which indicates that your turn is complete. [confused]

barbu1977
14-11-2006, 20:56
could it be that the default seting on the map does not have "always wait the end of turn" box checked?

No, I ended my turn by pressing [SHIFT][ENTER]
That works just fine. I just wanted to say that I didn't get the "press enter for next turn" message at the bottom of the screen. After ending my turn I got the "waiting for other civilizations", like always.

IglooDude

Civstats is up for the game:

http://www.civstats.com/viewgame.php?gameid=203

The registration password for this game is the letter c. (If you don't have an account at civstats yet, you need to create one before you can register for this particular game.)

And I'm not sure if it'll matter, or for that matter if anyone can even tell, but if I've got your two civ leaderheads in the wrong order just let me know.

Tubby Rower
14-11-2006, 21:24
I didn't get the message either...btw, DArkness and I are tied for the lead :)

IglooDude
14-11-2006, 21:33
I'll see if that setting can be changed via Gyaathar's utility.

Socrates

How do you play a PitBoss game ? [:p]

barbu1977
14-11-2006, 22:22
In the civ menu, you select Multiplayer -> Direct IP connexion.

Then you enter the IP sent to you by PM, hit connect, select your leader, enter PW, wait a little and you play your turn!

That's about it.

IglooDude
14-11-2006, 22:58
On one of my civs, it prompted me to hit enter when all moves were done, but it didn't do that for the other civ...

Socrates
14-11-2006, 23:36
I played. :) I didn't get the End-of-turn message for either civ.

barbu1977
15-11-2006, 00:49

Robboo
15-11-2006, 01:52

Robi D
15-11-2006, 08:00
Logged in for both civs no problems, will play in a few hours when i have the chance to sit down for more than 5 mins.
Anyway big thanks to akots and ID for the map and server respectively :)

socralynnek
15-11-2006, 10:19

That'd certainly be my assumption - the game is running unpatched still, so unless you install an unpatched Warlord game or the game patches, you're SOL.

BCLG100

makes the AI actually clever, theres a thread both at cfc and poly listing what he's done and basically he's made the AI think like a human- its pretty amazing tbh. Makes the game harder without just giving the AI bonuses

Tubby Rower

so ynnek and BCLG are at war.. do tell... I'm at work and won't be able to check the game until a bit later.

EDIT:: nevermind I have once again confirmed that I'm a moron... everyone is at war in this game... duh. I confused this with the CDZ pitboss game [wallbash]

I think it happens automagically when we meet.

Wait, does that mean if we don't explore we can delay war weariness? [lol]

Tubby Rower
17-11-2006, 20:30
when you meet someone.. it will auto-declare. Sort of like in our 2 on 2 PBEM with Whomp & BCLG

Robboo
17-11-2006, 20:51
cool...so dont explore more than i need to. :)

Does anyone know if there is war weariness in this game ??? I hope not, otherwise Always War is quite silly.

Are we supposed to conduct absolutely no diplo with any opponent in this game ? I assume so.

Is there any reason for the turn timer to be set at 22 hours per turn, instead of say 24 hours ? Just wondering. Does the current turn automatically end when the last civ to play logs out ? Not sure, but it seems so, if I understand that Civstats.com page well.

BCLG100

no war weariness

no diplo

22 hours because due to loading of game etc it evens out at about 24 hoursish

There is a little WW but at only 1/4 of an SP game. Also if you look at how WW is worked out in civ4 the only time you get it is by fighting losing units outside your cultural influence as well as taking cities. Also WW is specific to each civ, so if you kill someone off it resets. The only way in this game that you will suffer the effect of WW is if you attack someone, lose a lot of units and they survive. There is an article in the war acadamy at the cfc which goes into greater details here (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/strategy/war_weariness.php).

As for diplomacy, in game your at war with everyone so there is none, however that does stop you conducting some out of the game.

The 22hrs, as BC alluded too the pitboss clock tends to run a little slow so 22hrs takes about 24hrs in RL

BCLG100
19-11-2006, 12:37
I thought we agreed to no contact out of the game anyways, due to tubbys benefit because he couldnt keep up with diplomacy.

Robi D
19-11-2006, 13:04
I've never seen it mentioned. Although lets face it there is not that much available for discussion. The only thing two people could discuss is not attacking each other for x turns so they can focus on killing other people. I think even tubby can handle minimal negotiations.

Socrates
19-11-2006, 14:41
Does a PitBoss server use a time system based on the Sun or what ? [lol] We gotta tell Firaxis they can use quartz !

Robboo
19-11-2006, 16:04
kyrs...the timer is right but when we log in or do other in game functions its pauses the timer therefore it "looks" like its running slow.

I see... A weird way to implement a "timer", I'm afraid. It should have top priority over any feature ! Anyway, does the next turn start immediately when the last player logs out ? On the Civstats page, it seems it's always the case (and thus said player gets to play 2 turns in a row). If so, that means that we can speed up things a little...

Robboo
19-11-2006, 17:40
yep when everyone played it starts the next turn. Some turns will go quick but expect during major wars for turns to last the full time.

I suppose for you the best thing about being thumped by me is that i'm playing america as you are in this game. Should give you some ideas on how to win.

Oh and when people see someone pissing in the breeze they tend to stand well clear bringing us back to hitting nothing or yourself so leave my metaphor alone

Robboo
21-11-2006, 15:18
yeah..control the choke and have more food rich land...and play against a fool who tries to control the choke with a city too far away from his capital.

As far as pissing in the breeze...Tubby isnt that bright and BC is usually too drunk to check wind direction.

intersting.....can you "attack" a city with your missionary to force your religion on them..

To world builder I go to try something out.

Robi D
24-11-2006, 06:35
You can send a missionary, but unless a cities undefended he would be killed before he got a chance. Also there is nothing to stop it spreading via a trade route by itself except for running theocracy.

akots
30-11-2006, 09:59
Indeed they can. Don't forget that this is the hub-type map and there might be a rather large barbarian-infested area towards the center of the map whereas the starting locations of each player are rather compact which might "squeeze" barbarians and animals into the space available for them outside of the cultural borders.

Call me paranoid, but setting anything to "auto" in Civ is a nono for me. And BTW, what are you doing exactly each turn if your exploring units are controlled by the AI ? [hmm]

Tubby Rower
30-11-2006, 14:06
I was away last week from Wednesday to Sunday and I wanted my little scouts to go exploring. Most of my "island" is non-black, so I set them to auto-explore while I was gone so no time was wasted. I needed some sort of intelligence since sending them blindly into the black, could have ended badly.

on a side note, if the animal wasn't a bear, I prolly would have survived since I was on a forested hill.

Socrates
30-11-2006, 15:13
OK, but auto-explore what ? What you had already unveiled ? [hmm] What for ?

BTW, I have one question. What happens when you don't log on for a turn or more ? Can we stop the game for a few days if people go on holiday ? I'm a bit uneasy to let an AI get in charge of my civ for a week... An answer would be laptop + WiFi, but that is costly. Always money...

Tubby Rower
30-11-2006, 16:08
you could either get a sitter or give your workers, cities, research and units queued orders. Just hold down the shift key and select away.

The only thing is if someone declares war on you or you want to do any trades during that time. Then you definatly need a sitter. I know that I'll be away the last week of the year so it would be nice if that week we could shut it down, but I don't think that it's mandatory.

Robboo
30-11-2006, 18:08
Tubby I agree..week between Christmas and new years may be a good time to shut it down. too many people away for enough subs to be available. its also a good time for a cease fire. :)

Also to anyone who need a player to fill in around this time in other games, i'm hosting the party this year so i'm available:)

Sounds reasonable...a few days before for people traveling and we can kick it on on the 1/2.

Me too.

And a reminder : sometimes someone forgets to do that or an equivalent, which results in the game waiting for it, and if the dude doesn't log on again (likely), the turn will only be completed after the full cycle. [blush2]

BTW, it seems there is a city at size 5 (demographics button). After 19 turns ? I highly doubt the dude has had the time to build a granary so early (50 hammers, some turns on high hammers and low food, Pottery being a tech you have to research whatever your civ...) AND profit from it. This means the dude was able to get 22+24+26+28 food, ie. 100 food, in 19 turns, which results in more than 5 food per turn in average !! [eek] WTF ?

BCLG100
06-12-2006, 13:14

And not to mention that this figure (more than 5 food per turn in average) should be the result of improvements built by a worker... and you don't have a worker in the beginning... Lemme guess, Simon, did akots give you 5 wheat grasslands already farmed and by a river ? [eek]

To all : Might be an idea to play the current turn before tonight (Europe time), so that I don't lose one turn. [lol] the funny thing about Pitboss games is that it doesn't matter if you play every turn. the game will go on if you play or you don't. But I played this morning around 2 hours ago and will try to play this afternoon if the turn changes over again.

sorry krys did you still manage to play the turn?

Socrates
17-12-2006, 23:13
Nope, and the irony is... I spent something like 10-15 minutes before firing up my PC, only to discover I had missed said turn by... 4 minutes. [eek] Which means I could have played it if I had been nerdy to the extreme as soon as I stepped in my house. I'm still surprised because this turn lasted a lot more than 22 hours, I know it usually lasts more (seems like the clock doesn't have its own battery and is a low-priority process on the PitBoss server), but that more ?... [hmm] No biggie, I'll live with it.

BCLG100

I haven't played the current turn (but I guess there will always be one like that, since the game starts a new turn when all are done). But moreover, I'm away from Friday, January 5 to Saturday, January 13. So I'll be unable to play during that week.

BCLG100
22-12-2006, 14:06
i dont mind stopping then krys but it may be worthwhile to ask around for a sub?

Socrates
03-01-2007, 14:20
I've just successfully played my turn with both civs. :)

As said in my previous post, I'm leaving the city on Friday afternoon (in exactly 48 hours), and I'm coming back on Saturday morning, a week after that. Yeah I'm going skiing in the Alps. [cool]

I don't know what's Igloo's policy on this (it's your server after all). I'd rather play my turns myself, for coherency reasons, and not lose 8 turns. But it's up to you. I don't intend to leave again before looong this year (if I go to The Hague in February, I could even play there).

socralynnek
03-01-2007, 14:22
You could ask someone to play the turns for you. Maybe grahamiam or whomp...
I guess I need to find someone for me too, cause I am away for a week in middle of January.
If we stop that each time where just one player is away, we won't get this done til Civ VII...

IglooDude
03-01-2007, 15:50
Socralynnek's pretty much summed up my take - Christmas break was one thing, but stopping the game for you for a week means I have to stop it anytime anyone is going to miss more than a couple turns in order to be fair to everyone, and then the game begins stuttering as it needs to conform to the schedules of nine different players.

In my (limited) experience in playing these, you won't have any problem finding someone to fill in for you while you're gone.

Socrates
03-01-2007, 16:00

They're both pretty odd. I've got to assume it is a result of the pre-pitboss setup, and I'm loath to futz with it for fear of breaking things outright.

Hmmm... That's an excellent point.

Okay, I'll see if I can figure something out this weekend. Apologies in advance for any downtime or disruptions caused. I'll be doing frequent saves, so I don't expect anyone to have to re-do turns.

Well, I have been running several pitboss servers 24/7 for months, and I am a network engineer by trade, but... *gets off high horse, shoots it, and beats it with a stick*

...good idea. :)

Given your results to date, I'm not particularly worried. [neener]

Yeah Robboo is a keen liar and his taunts are 90% empty ;)

Robboo

liar..I never lied to anyone...yet. ;)

The taunt thing is about 50% true. Sometimes its 90% BS and sometimes its 90 % not BS. BUT there is always a bit of BS involved.

Hi person that I ran into then ran away from.

Ok now i have a MAJOR issue. I am trying to trade something from one civ to the other and it wont let me. I opened up the diplo, put the item in the offer and sent it. I then exited and entered into the other civ and no offer appears. I went back and forth a few times to no avail.

Any ideas why, because it should be something thats easily done.

No idea offhand, but given the thwackedness of the unit cycling, it sounds like that's just another symptom of whatever the larger problem is. Hopefully I'll be able to figure it out this weekend.

Robi...are you sure you dont already have it in the other civ...do they not share everything?

barbu1977

IICR, you don't have to trade, resources are shared automaticly. Is that possible?

Robi D
20-01-2007, 17:49
No they don't share everything, one resource, one civ. If it was true that swapping/giving was not required then the option to do it in the diplo screen would not come up to do it. Send the offer isn't the problem, it just not recieving it at the other end.

One thing i've thought of is due to the wackiness of the game the offers might not be recieved until next turn but i will have to wait and see.

Sorry if my description of the problem is unclear but spoiler info is involved.

It might be worthwhile seeing if there are any other pitboss games out there with specially made maps and if they suffered any problems

I've experienced Robi's problem too. no trading might be checked which excludes trading the resources unfortunately.

It might happen actually because it is AW game however if being played by a team. So, logically, trading within the team should be possible and when the game was tested (in hotseat) that had actually worker. However, the Pitboss has its own glitches and bugs and hard to tell exactly how it would turn out. I know also that in similar setup in multipayer games with simultaneous moves it is working so it should work.

Only AW was checked, that trading was not checked. But I don't know how it were when ID actually started the game.

If no trading was on then i would imagine going into the diplo screen it wouldn't give you the chance to do so.

then can we change cities?

if we cant trade we should be allowed to trade cities.

Robi D
22-01-2007, 05:06
Nope can't do that either BC because when you send the deal one civ it doesn't arrive at the other one to accept it to make it go through.

If we can't fix the problem then my game is basically screwed
