View Full Version : CDZ Cup 10th Edition Discussions Thread

We can't start the discussion too early, can we? Let's start this thread with a statement: the cup begins after the 7th league match. Any objections?

BTW, 10 edition! [bday]

I'm in too. :) If the Cup starts at the same moment as last season, then it's perfect, since the last match is then followed by the 1st national Cup match.

P.S. : I thought a little, and I think that the fact that great teams here are "forced" to play weak teams like mine in the CDZ Cup attracts more people to the weaker teams' stadiums, counteracting to a certain level the 6k that we have to spend abroad for some matches. I don't think I'd be able to challenge a great team for a real friendly every week... Plus, you guys rock. [goodjob]

Yeah a handicap system so some of the sucky teams can win. I mean BC needs some help. /joking...about the handicap system..not BC's team.

7th week should be perfect...I have a home and away series with BC in the next two weeks...so i should know if I can beat him and not get last.

I think 9th edition was pretty okay, not counting all the walkovers. If we make the schedule more clear in advance that might help in that aspect. That's why I started with the statement that we start after league match 7.

Well, I'll be in of course, but I won't be able to (heavily) take responsibility for the organization again this time, as I have and expect to have even less time to spare on doing so.

This especially concerns drawing groups and creating fixture lists, as I never was able to quickly create those in the first place (all done by hand) plus contacting people in case of WOs and/or enlisting extra teams in the cup.

I'm going to have to ask if anyone else would be able to assist with that this time. I'm still able to enter scores and results if need be, of course.

4 groups of 5 Round robin in league for 4 games then you take the top 4 plus next best 4. Single elimination till the end. The rest of the ones who dont go into the "winners" bracket play for "The BC Trophy"... well they play to not win that award.

7 weeks total.

Tubby Rower
13-09-2006, 20:19
how do you play a group of 5? unless there is cross over to other groups...

Robboo
13-09-2006, 22:31
1 off week....for outside of group play which doenst count in the group standings.

Honestly..I screwed that up.....so I just made up a reasonable answer.

Kemal

It can be quite difficult to create an adequate cup format, I suggest we use a deadline for signing up (say next week, giving us a week to plan before the fixture list needs to be created), so that you can create a format with the total amount of participants as a fixed number. Usually, a few latecomers arrive just before the deadline, making all previous planning on the format redundant.

Also, the cup should always run until the end of the season as that is the point of the CDZ Cup, creating easy friendlies until the national cup starts again, playing against familiar teams.
Another point that is usually high on the list is avoiding playing the same team twice in the league stages. Putting that all together can sometimes be difficult but I'm sure something can be worked out once the amount of participants is known.

Thanks for the offers of help btw, I will be around doing stuff as well, it is mostly setting up the fixture list and creating the draw that took most of my time, which is what needs to be done when starting the cup, and when creating the KO stages.

Don't you know that the discussion thread is located here (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=-1&TOPIC_ID=3825&REPLY_ID=86658). This is the signup thread [:P]

As mentioned in that thread. the #1's of each group were ranked 1-5.. then then #2's of each group were ranked 6-10.. then then #3's of each group were ranked 11-15.. then then #4's of each group were ranked 16-20.. then then #5's of each group were ranked 21-25.. then then #6's of each group were ranked 26-30..

The top 16 teams were put in a typical bracket where #1 meets #16, #2 meets #15, #3 meets #14, #4 meets #13, #5 meets #12, #6 meets #11, #7 meets #10, #8 meets #9.

The bottom 14 teams were attempted to be squeezed into some sort of 4 week playoff.

Since you were the 2nd best #1 you will meet the worst #3 which happens to be Katanga.

ProPain has been away for a week without internet access it seems, though he should have been back in time to accept or at least send you a reply/explanation.

Hopefully you can still get a friendly in time, you will naturally be awarded the 5-0 win in the cup.

altkaese
08-11-2006, 01:44
I must admit I made a mistake there: I challenged him in a neutral stadium and accidently sent my message to the manager of the stadium.
Still, he didn't accept the challenge and I can't find a rechallenge in "my team" or a message by him...

Shabbaman
08-11-2006, 19:33
So, I beat Katanga again. 166 hatstats, and this truly was my second team. OK, I admit I just got a new midfielder, but that doesn't count. Most bizarre feature of the match: my wing attack was better than last sunday.

Oh, and two weeks for the consolation prize :D

I beat Yndy's Chimica Târn#259;veni (EDIT : Tarnaveni, stupid characters) !!! [eek] Yeah, his B-team, but that's a good result for me. The funny thing is that I'm fielding what I can on Wednesdays, and I try to save my precious (and fragile) IMs for Saturdays.

16-11-2006, 12:33
Hmm, we hit a bit of a snag when compiling the new fixture list, since the loser's bracket contains 3 winners and 3 losers for places 25/30, but only 1 fixture to determine the worst team. That means that one team that has lost everything would never be in contention of the last place, simply because only 2 teams can fight over this coveted position.

The 3 teams losing in the 25/30 bracket are:

FC Duckstad, BCLG United (of course ;)) and Aristocats. Of these teams, FC Duckstad has won the most matches in the cup so far, so I'm gonna put them in the places 25/28 bracket, and let BCLG and Aristocats fight it out over last place.(*)

*Of course this has nothing (cough, cough) to do with the lifelong grudge De Snaken have built up vs those annoying aristocats who've always beaten Snaken in the cup so far... [:p]

HELL FUCKIN YEAH!!!!! TOOO FUCKIN RIGHT!!!!!!!!

quote:
811 spectators had come to The Shagpad this cloudy day. United had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation. The following players took the field: Casbarro - Jackson, Calderhead, Narang - Locke, Vaher, Meira, Mertens - Ali, Maguire, Cowan.

Aristocats had chosen a strategic 5-3-2 formation. Lineup: Casal - Aranha, Sperer, Sela, Bova, Verkade - Zvon#269;ek, Rolfes, Hermon - Gandolfi, Goodall.

Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Aristocats. Aristocats's defense sent a ball soaring up the middle on a beautiful counterattack, but Yefet Sela's finish was met by the reaching hands of the keeper. Some beautiful plays on the left side of the field resulted in a 15th minute goal by Kalle Vaher for United, putting them ahead 1 - 0. Some things can only be learned through experience, and Ayodhana Narang should take his lesson to heart after nearly giving Aristocats a goal in the 21st minute. A great pass from the defensive line of Aristocats resulted in a counterattack that was smoothly dealt with by Yefet Sela in the enemy's central penalty box, but his finish went high. The referee showed United's Mels Locke the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. 1 - 0 was the halftime score. The forty-five minutes were dominated by United, with an impressive 62 percent possession of the ball.

Aristocats's right side looked dangerous in the 60th minute, but Juan Casbarro made a good save on Dean Goodall's hard shot to the top corner. The swift technical skills of Zein Ali was often too much for the tall but somewhat slow Olivier Sperer who looked almost humiliated at times. Francesco Bova was suffering from cramps and had difficulty keeping up as the opposition pushed forward. Zein Ali had no problems getting through and hit home the 2 - 0 goal. Santino Gandolfi was in the clear after breaking the offside trap following a Aristocats counterattack from the left in the 85th minute. His neat finish made the score 2 - 1. United's Michael Jackson was shown a yellow card after 86 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Diego Casal was caught napping as Luís Meira lifted a ball over him following a free kick, but the ball hit the bar, rebounding into the keeper's arms. United held the ball, with a clear 61 percent of possession.

The most dominating United player was without a doubt Zein Ali. Juan Casbarro turned in a dismal performance, however. The most dominating Aristocats player was without a doubt Seran Aranha. Diego Casal was a disappointment, however. The match ends 2 - 1.

Two legs are played for deciding last place in the cup this time, so I fear you'll be taking on KR (a pissed-off kr I'm sure) again, with the aggregate score deciding who finishes last. If both teams are still tied, I suppose the previous results in the cup decide. If those would still be the same, the team whose name most closely resembles the name of the award for finishing last is the deciding factor, I guess...

Oops.

Semi-Final between TBBFC and Meli's Manglers has just finished.

Belgium play their matches at funny times [:p]

Forgot to set my squad and my default is an interesting 3-4-2 formation due to injury [lol]

I got beat 7-0. His 11 men against my 10. [blush]

At Friday, I challenged Acorazado Fuerte on neutral ground and wrote him a message.
No reply yet, and he didn't login since the 10th of November.

Shall I find another friendly? I'll wait till tomorrow late morning/early afternoon...

Tomorrow means Monday, of course...

Yes, you should do that, he missed the last friendly as well.

BCLG has not accepted. Will start looking for another one in a couple of hours.

Seriously thinking of quiting the cup if this is the way it goed. :(

Kemal
27-11-2006, 10:49
I think he might want to pass on the injury award to someone else... I think I remember him saying he wanted it to go to someone more active in ht than him, and by allowing a WO he will be disqualified from the results. Also, it will conveniently allow him to retain his prestigious award, of course. ;)

Still, the WOs in general are not a good thing, but with the cup having grown so much over the past few seasons, while some managers not having as much time/drive to spend on HT as they used to have, they are to be expected. The large majority of the friendlies is still being organized and WOs are caused by "the usual suspects" in general, so I don't see much problems there.

Once the cup is over, lets open up a review thread again, and see where things can improve for a later edition.

pff. If he knew he would not accept he should havce said so![aargh]

Kemal

True, but I'm only guessing about his motivations here! I have no idea what really is behind it...

socralynnek
27-11-2006, 11:03
I guess he is having computer problems or such, haven't seen him posting for days, he didn't login in HT and he didn't play our PBEM, so I guess this is an unintended WO.

Robboo
27-11-2006, 13:49
i had a WO in the cup but mainly due to me not setting a lineup...( which I thought I did). BC mentioned a big school project.

Tubby Rower
27-11-2006, 14:07
WO's still give the other team training for the week (although you will lose training for that week). What were talking about with a WO is when someone doesn't accept the friendly

akots
27-11-2006, 14:13
PP SV have not accepted. [sad] Looking for an alternative atm.

Kemal
27-11-2006, 14:21
That's what I mean with the usual suspects... I don't think it's necessarily bad will, but we will have to see whether some teams have the time to participate in an event like this, since this way the original focus of the cup (guaranteed friendly match) is jeopardized, and I don't think any party would want to be on the receiving end of WOs like this.

These teams would still be part of the cdz hattrick community, but not necessarily be involved in the cup it organizes. It would be good to hear managers such as pp and schip about this, and how they see the problem..

Tubby Rower
27-11-2006, 14:54
maybe we could institute a rule that if you have 2 or more weeks where you fail to accept a freindly you are [banned] from next season's cup.

Sibul
27-11-2006, 15:06
I try to understand 2 of them PP SV and Acorazado Fuerte as they haven't logged in long time allready so there is something ..... not able to connect internet or something. (I know right now one team whos owner is dead :()Hope nothing so serious happend to them.

But thing is I don't like how BCLG United gived away prize it's not nice. Ok if he had told to his opponent that he don't accept so he can find new friendly but so ..... bad.

One thing is sure he droped off from competition as WO is writen allready by our cup and prize laws. Offcorse now is little intresting end to prize as there is one leader de burchtheren with 12 points and lots teams with 7-8,5 points. All can be happen

edit. changed name as wroted wrong 1st sorry

Socrates
27-11-2006, 15:39
For what it's worth, BCLG usually plays our new PitBoss game late, and sometimes misses the deadline. I think he's just not online.

Kemal
27-11-2006, 16:27
I'm sorry, I'd like to make clear here that I have absolutely no knowledge about the reasoning behind BCLGs absence, and I'd like to make clear that him giving a WO to miss the prize was totally a (not overly serious) speculation on my part.

Until we know more, Sibul please understand that BCLG's motivations of conceding a WO might be (and likely are) completely unrelated to his standings in the injury cup, and probably his general feeling about the idea. He just hinted once that he felt someone more active with HT could use 3 months supporter better, that's all I know.

Btw, Chimica hasn't given away that many WOs, have they? Or should that have read Acorazado Fuerte? yndy (Chimica) was online and posting in my guestbook as well as here on CDZ yesterday and this morning...

Sibul
27-11-2006, 18:22
Ok there may be some other problems too as he haven't logged in from 22 nov. Hope all ok with him but rules are rules and he can't have 1st place. even with good reason. As my professor in university told "U can't have reason to miss my lecture even death isn't good enought if I see U later :)"

WO in this cup:

3 WO
Acorazado Fuerte
PP SV

2 WO
Pykanites

1 WO
BCLG United
The Blue Boys FC

I'm sorry but since I have not heard from you, I could not have risked for longer. If it were not the lack of regular league/qualifier match due to the end of the season, I could have been more patient and could have forfeited the alternative friendly arrangement for an opportunity to play against PP SV. Sorry reno, my internet has been playing up, ive only managed to play 1 turn of pitboss for one game in the past 48 hours, i think its fixed now but my apologies for not accepting our friendly.

And what Kemal said was true about me not especially wanting the hattrick thingy, because i can think of folk far more worthy of it and i wouldnt really use it so well.

edit- i can list the reasons that i havnt been able to log in to hattrick if need be but one of them was not to rig the injury competition, if that was the case id have done it a long time ago....

My frist win in an actual CDZ-cup match. I was trying to avoid theconsolation prize by kicking the hell out of the scalp hunting opponents, which resulted in 2 red cards for me and for for the pyknites. fortunateley they did not do this in one of my league matches this year.

it appears as though the Meltdown are taking the off-season as "relax time" Lucky Aggie has shut them out 4-0. So I have improved on my previous best CDZ cup rank by 5 from 27th to 22nd.

Heh, I got obliterated by Codrutul for places 5/6 as I played most of my B-team after sunday's qualifier. Can't afford to do that vs such class teams though: 0-8.

But the attendance of 5493 was again a new record for Snaken in a friendly, so not too unhappy with the game all in all, grossing over 20K in ticket money.

27th[wallbash]. But next season my midfield will no longer be outclassed by every team in the second halve and certainly not in the first halve. Hoping for a more fortunate draw next season as well and I might avoid plaing in the bottom teir again.

I'll take 16th, especially as despite playing a number of overseas matches, it came out revenue neutral.

Don't think I can plan on finishing that high again next year, as I doubt I can end up in a group with Robboo and BCLG propelling me to the top half.

Way to go on arranging this though.

Nice pom, poms. lol

I'm really happy to have won the CDZ Cup although it's a shame I never got to test my team against Suca's. His run in his national Cup was amazing. Congrats to him for doing so well.

Hopefully we'll meet again next season in the CDZ. Fingers crossed because my team stayed in the Cup longer than round 3 and I end up in the lower tier of the draw.

Thanks to everyone involved in running the Cup. I think everyone enjoys playing in it and appreciates the work you put in.
