This is a spoiler for the Alternate Reality Pitboss game (running on Xeophists' server. See also this topic at CFC: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=178488)

I took over Spain from the AI in about 2500 BC. By that time the only useful thing the AI had done was to found buddhism. I had a worker sitting in Madrid, doing nothing, because the AI had neglected to get the worker techs.
So I set to correct these errors. I quickly got some worker techs and improved the lands around me. Expansion soon followed, as well as a short war with my Southern neighbour (Inca - played by VMerchant). He made the error of sending out an unescorted settler. I couldn't let that pass by of course. That war netted me a worker, at the cost of a warrior.
I made a deal with my Eastern neighbour (England - played by Civgeek). We are friendly and are considering an alliance. I am strongly considering bringing in our Northern neighbour (Mali - played by TELawrence) into this alliance. He's the only civ north of Civgeek and myself, so all I'd have left to worry about is my southern border.

This game began about three weeks ago, but two very nice powersessions made us reach 700 BC today.

Early AD's update

The alliance between myself and Civgeek has been finalized and TELawrence has joined as the third party.
That leaves me with only a southern border to defend. Civgeek has already been at war with the Inca (who are supported by Greece and possibly America). I am now building up my forces to see if we can get rid of the Inca.

In other news:
I focussed Madrid on a pair of wonders and I got them both. Very nice...

Looking good, but aren't you concerned that these 2 really helpful wonders in Madrid, plus some future ones from your GE(s) will paint a bigger and bigger X on your city to mark the spot for other players, once the initial alliance runs its course?

And with the pyramids, will you be focusing on a specialist strategy using representation, or are you going to use if for something else? :)

It's a risk...
But the alliance should help for now. I have the 4th largest military and I only have to defend my southern border. Later on I'll keep a close eye on my allies (which is why I'll be spreading buddhism like mad from now on).
I think these two wonders are a great combination. Growth from the gardens and advanced government from the pyramids to control those people. And also great engineer points. I think it's worth the risk.

I don't know what government it'll be at this moment. I am planning a serious push towards the Inca, so I'll have to take that into consideration. :) Representation and Universal suffrage are more suited for peace, while hereditary rule and police state could be interesting during wars. It's a good thing that I am Spain. The spiritual trait can help me switch civics quite fast.

Agreed on the usefulness of these two wonder, and looking at the demographs it is remarkable to see how little you have lost in terms of empire development while pursuing these 2 expensive builds. :)

GNP is quite low though for such a large land area.... is it still possible to keep up in science, or are you depending on your allies to do research for now?

Agreed. That's my weakness at the moment. For now I am slightly dependent on my allies, but I am already working on that. I have been building some workers recently, and I will be able to increase my GNP shortly. That was basically the sacrifice I made to build those two wonders. For a very long time I only had two workers. Now I have 6 or 7 and I'm building one more...

I'd make one of your allies a 'firmer' ally, this way if it comes to it he can help you take out the other one, otherwise it looks good so far, i wouldnt worry about the gnp so much just yet but you are going to need to get them cottages up and running otherwise it'll begin to hurt you. you seem to have a fairly costalish start, have you considered the colossus? (i know its another wonder)

Yes, but only a third of my cities are on the coast, so I am not quite sure if the investment is worth it... [???]
As for firm allies. Civgeek and I started this alliance, TELawrence came in later. TELawrence has borders only with us, so we could try to keep him pinned down. No plans in that direction just yet, but if it comes to it, I'll have options. But like I said, I'll start spreading buddhism to keep an eye on things... :)

No it probably it isnt worth it thinking about it, unless you plan on building a couple more cities on the coast.

have you got a great prophet pumping area so you can rake in the cash from the missionaries?

Planning on it, but it is not yet running. I want to have some engineers too. :)

Nah, I don't mind. It's nice to see that people read my spoilers.

The plans are simple:
1 - Spread buddhism
2 - Build cottages
3 - Build my army
4 - Expand southwards (Civgeek and I are already talking about who to attack first, the Inca (my southern neighbour) or the Americans (Civgeeks' southern neighbour).

Good stuff Darkness. Interesting to see how you've built the empire so far. I know namliaM (aka the mailman). I've sg'd with him and he's a good guy. Have you met him?

No. He's one of three I haven't met yet. I expect they are on a different continent...

I haven't got a clue. I came in at about 2500 BC, so I really can't say why Xeophist named the game like this when he started it... [???]

1180 AD

In this game the alliance I am in is not very reliable. CivGeek had to drop out and he was replaced by Firefox. I have very little contact with him, aside from the occasional trade. And TELawrence hasn't logged in for three weeks now, so I expect him to be changed to AI in the near future.
This has left me with very few (if any) offense options, so I am playing a builders game. I am trying to get as many wonders as I can. Barcelona holds the Great Lighthouse and the Colossus. Madrid has more (I'll post a picture in a few turns, when the Notre Dame is complete).

The north of Spain (conquered from barbarians, because I want the furs):

You seem to be lacking quite a bit on the soldiers side, maybe you should consider building some more if only for defence?

Damn server crashed 3 weeks ago and is still not up. The game is rapidly dying I think. The CFC thread is also devoid of any activity. Pity, it was a fun game. :(

The server's been down for three months now, so I'm pronouncing this game to be dead.
