Out of curiousity...not saying this happened [:p] but what's the order when two civs learn religion on the same turn? Is it the civ that gets on Pitboss first?

don't know. When Poly was coming in, I stayed logged in just to make sure [lol]. Test it out Whomp and wait until the last minute to log in.
I think its the same as the AI game..order of turn....in other words first one to press enter.
We need to test this out..everyone researching a religion should post the turn till. :D

I'm researching Divine Right and will get it in 198 turns
I am also doing Divine right(193 turns)...since I am "Arabia". I thought thats how religion is supposed to work in pitboss. You mean anyone can research and get any religion? I got Confusicism as china last time(CFC)...even without trying so I figured thats how it worked...
I think there's still an 'order of play', though that is effectively out of order in simultaneous moves, except for these cases. [rolleyes] I don't think it depends on who presses enter first, but who is first in the list when logging in.
Yer, i think that i would be the first as my civ is right at the top.
I won't be able to play the turn on Friday. Can play Thursday morning and Saturday night. If I leave it be like it is, is it OK, or stupid AI will reassign something there? If it will, then I need to ask for a sub for this turn.
it shouldnt do, just queue up your moves and build orders-missing a turn doesnt really matter its if you miss a couple of weeks of them :)

Akots, I recently missed a week, so I just set a build queue and a movement path for my explorer. That went just fine (besides the fact that the warrior got killed by a bear while I wasn't around to move him to safety... :( )

Ah, now I understand what you were saying the other day when we were waiting for the turn to end. ;)
The AI won't take over your turn until our admin kicks you.
No the AI does take over after awhile if you dont do anything.
For instance i couldnt get into the 18 player for about a month and a half and when i came back id researched a few techs and built a worker and some units- things i had not set to do.
And you're sure DaveShack didn't kick you because you were so inactive for so long? This seems rather unlikely...

So... I've seen a lot of animals running around. I know of 3 scouts/scouting warriors that have perished. Luckily I've been there to finish off the animal in 2 of the cases [:p] Anyone else seeing the civ4 wildlife?
I had one warrior kill 2 lions..no losses yet.

Uploader has been fixed. I think I was executing the old version of the uploader before, or something.
Also, I just figured out where pitboss automatically saves after each player's turn, so in the future (assuming the hard drive doesn't fail) any outage should mean no loss of turns at all, and reverting to right after the most recently played turn.

There is a rumor going around that there is a nation of Shacks inhabited by someone named Dave. Our Hindu mystics and shamen deny that they exist at least until there is proof of their existance.
In other news, the Great Yellow River running through Fat Boy City is causing health problems when it floods the local plains. Residents are advised never to drink yellow water.
I'll be travelling to Russia for about 3 weeks with intermittent internet access, Grahamiam will be playing the game during this time for Mali. Please make sure all deals will be fully honored. Detailed instructions sent.

I'd advise all pilgrams to Hinduism's Holiest city to be wary of the animals that lurk outside of the city liimits. I have no control over them, but have witnessed at least 4 weary travellers die in their paws.

Power blip rebooted the pitboss machine, it'll be back up in about 5 min with the last autoreload.
I have returned but not yet fully. Hopefully grahamiam can continue for a few more days playing the turns for Mali while I try to gather the wits after extensive travel season.

Naw, the office itself is moving to a different building, about a mile away. Lot of work, but the current landlord wants to rent the whole building out as a unit, and we only occupy half of it, so he won't renew the lease. "double moves" means don't wait until the end of the turn and then move twice.. But what if say I declare on Whomp tonight and he doesn't move before I get up in the morning and the turn has changed... I can still continue correct?

I figured the no rules thing we had set meant that double moves we're allowed.
i dont mind but i thought that it was established we were able too?
We said no rules..therefore double moves should be allowed. No matter either way however I happen to think that its part of the game. I will often play at the end of the turn and then the begining of the next. So would I have to wait till my opponent played...hardly seems fair if I can only play at certain times.
Who started the war?
I attacked IglooDude, but he had Tubby and Darkness as ally. If I didn't attack ID, they would've attacked me sooner or later. Once again I failed at diplomacy. [rolleyes]
I hate double moves. Just so you know. Civ is turn based oriented. Simultaneous moves is the only thing that makes games with so many people possible, but 'double moves' are just pure abuse.

And though I personally have no grip with double moves (even factoring in that in this game had Matrix DM'ed me I'd be down one city right now), but if I'm aware that the person I'm fighting promises no DMs I'll respond in kind. I have the luxury of generally hitting my turns in either morning or evening every day.
That said, this game does not have a rule against them (I don't think - someone feel free to review the thread if you remember otherwise).

I have not attacked anyone I have promised to be peaceful with. A friend asked me to join in on Matrix and I did... whether that was to my benefit will be played out over the next few weeks
the diplo screen reveals alliances.. I could pm anyone interested the alliances in this game :)

On a more practical note: to avoid DM's, I have to wait for IglooDude to play his turn, and Darkness and Tubby have to wait for me. Since I'm always around when the turn ends, may I play before ID from now on? You don't have to wait for each other, after all. :)

Matrix... As far as I'm concerned, a 5 hours delay in moves is sufficient even if you get in 2 moves before someone else. The benefit of simultaneous turns is completely nullified if we have to start waiting for others to play.
my definition of a DM is when you wait until the end of a turn and move for one turn, then end your turn, then use up the next turn's movement as well. anything else is fine with me
Can't say I agree with you here, but fact is I asked you to play in turn. I'd like to break that rule once, so I need your permission. ;) But it seems you don't mind. Besides, IglooDude can't get to me this turn anyway...

man I disagree with this whole process.
DM to me is holding up the turn so you can move press enter and let it roll to the next turn either by time or by being the last person to play. THen you play the next turn. All this playing in order stuff is not what a live action Civ pitboss game is about. If we wanted to do that why not play it as a PBEM.
I will not do what I and Tubby described as a double move but I will play when I can and not wait for my opponent in a war. If he has to wait thats his problem. I can not and will not set my life by waitign for someone else to play. I have a job and kids and a wife...if I want to keep them I play when I can.
We said "no rules" but this is becomign a massive rule and counter rule mess. Nothing more ticks me off more than discussing rules after we start playing.

to be honest... I usually only have in the mornings before work that I can play. So I'll play then. If the turn ends with my turn, I won't take the next turn. Sorry if this causes me to be a jerk Matrix, but I have a family as well and my wife has threatened more than once in the past to break my civ cd.
So I'll have to continue with the way that I've been playing. Double moves such as I have described above are abusive and I don't use them and would prefer others not to use them. But taking our turns in order does seem moronic since we are not playing sequential turns. If you want sequential turns, we need to switch to a PBEM so I can take my turn when I can.

But just a slight bit of organisation is way easier than switching to PBEM, where all the players not involved in this war also play in turn. You're making it much more of a problem than it actually is, and you obviously underestimate the negative effects of double moves. I mean, I could've destroyed IglooDude's city!
Well, "no rules" means "no rules" imho whether one likes it or not. If somebody values their city too much, they can log in at the end of turn and try to do whatever they can. Otherwise, it is free for grabbing.
IMvHO double move is not a bug or a glitch of a Pitboss game but is a feature of a Pitboss game and actually of any MP simultaneous moves game and if you don't like it, don't play it. Play either PBEM or turn-based MP. IMvvHHO.
Rather valid tactics for MP games which I have seen used by other players a lot and have used myself alot is not moving during the turn but pressing end of turn while waiting for others to move. When your opponent against which you are trying to wage a war had pressed end of turn, you waken your units and start moving them around while trying to threaten his already moved units. Hopefully, you can end up last to end the turn and then would have a decent chance to actually being able to attack him during the beginning of following turn by spamming throught the arrow keys. Games can be won or lost because of this and this is pretty valid strategy for any MP game.
Another thing is that people are playing when they can. So why should somebody wait for his opponent to move if he can play now? Again repeating, if his opponent values his city that much, he should either install Civ4 at work or set an alarm clock at 3 am or whatever time the end of turn is anticipated and try to make double move himslef which might actually save his ass with about 50% probability. Otherwise, this basically kills the idea of a Pitboss game.
However, later in the game, this plays lesser role but still imho battles in simultaneous moves games are fun and if somebody does not like it, then they should just stick with PBEM or turn-based MP from the very beginning. Everyone who signed up for this one had been aware of the DM feature and yet it had not been discussed earlier and "no rules" rule had been essentially accepted.

Well, agree here completely with you Robboo. I just do not understand the point here. Not that we are discussing some new explot or bug or glitch, no. It is a feature and if somebody does not like it, do not play that kind of game. For slow movers like me there is some time lag on the server rumored to be 6 seconds but actually is somewhat less than that.

Just to be clear here - I'm not DMing Matrix only because he noted at the beginning of the war that he wasn't DMing. My agreement with him does not extend to or necessarily affect others fighting me, or others fighting Matrix. I fully expect to DM BCLG in this game sooner or later. Well, it does take less time because you've got to move your stuff in a Pitboss game only during a single timespan over a period of 2 turns. Just to make sure to login at the end of turn and wait for a few minutes. And then can move again and forget all together about the game for 48 hours to come. ;)
And I'm not arguining with anyone here. You play like you want and let others play like they want and find it convenient for themselves as well.

Discussions of DM are going on several places...
My opinion is that this game was set up as "no rules" so there is nothing enforceable. Particular pairs or groups of players may agree to follow a certain convention.
Giving advance warning of a DM to invert the move order and make it easy on everyone is very honorable. Matrix improved his rep in my eyes by doing that. :D
On a purely academic basis...
A DM in a two-player context is swapping "move order" by either the player who "normally" plays second to arrage to move first in a turn, or the one who "normally" plays first to arrange to play last. This supposes that "move order" is a valid concept for simultaneous turns, which several people have asserted that it is, and several say that it is not.
If you think of simultaneous turns as being just a faster PBEM with an implied move order, then a DM is inherently self-correcting if the players resume their normal play order, and it's a one-time inversion of the play order if they don't.
A B | A B | B A | B A | B A the players have swapped order
A B | A B | B A | A B | A B both players did a DM and back to normal
Clearly, the 2nd player is the only one who can actually do a DM. The 1st player can force the 2nd player to DM in order to get a DM opportunity on the next turn, by delaying his turn until the 2nd player is forced to DM.

I was doign exactly what i said...giving matrix a hand. He wanted a defensive pact and I said no. I said I would help were I could. Tubby's city just sittgin there with a quechen while I had a stack of axes was to much to resist. I was hoping/planning to attack tubby later in the game. BUT much much much later on after a few others had been removed. I was not going to attack anyone till cannons.
Tubby declined my peace deal...said he loss a city so no peace without a price.....
Ohhhh K so we will still be fighting until something will be worked out.
