Cycling Champion has been launched!!

Today we started the open beta season and we're open for everybody who wants to participate.

A lot of bugs and issues that surfaced in the first tests have been resolved so we're ready to handle more people now. We're still working on more features and your input will be much appreciated and can shape the way the game develops the coming months.

Hope to see a lot of you around!

www.cyclingchampion.com

And if you dont like to play the game at least visit the site to see the beautifull work Mistfit did on our logo so it would fit in with the site style!

Congrats Propain!! [beer1][guiness]

This is very exciting news after a long development process. I'm sure you'll have a captive audience here and I will check it out once I get my pc back in service!

I have a question... I looked at the competition and noticed that there is a Pro Tour event at the same time as a European Tour event. I've entered both. Will my guys be participating in both or should I withdraw from one? Which one has a higher payout?

Hey Tubby... didn't I see your Sig tried on MythBusters? IIRC waterskiing behind a row team actually worked

Tubby Rower

yup, I saw that one too. They had a fast boat pulling them and they said that it was hard on the water-skier because the power came in bursts. but it's doable

Not really, swingue and I own a consultancy company that specialises in process improvement in the healthcare industry. And yes, we earn money with that.

Cycling Champion is a side project of me, Stephko and a 3rd guy who does play civ ( and quite well ) but who never registered at CDZ. And no, at the moment we don't earn any money with this. It just costs money as we need to employ programmers to get this stuff build :)

Mistfit
17-04-2006, 23:46
propain... care to share with your loyal CDZ'ers what we are supposed to be doing in this game?

I have finally after 1 yr gotten a full grasp on HT but seem a bit lost as to what I should be doing. How does the training work? Is there a method we should be using? Is it the same idea as HT? What are you training?

Pastorius
17-04-2006, 23:52
Heh, PP, I knew you did something serious, and that this wasnt it.

Like Mist, I too am a little confused, although I found some help in the manual.

1.) Congrats PP on moving this thing forward...It is pretty cool now and I can see endless possibilities for improvement (which you seem to be doing alot of already)

2.) Can we get a MOD to move this to other games so we can have a separate forum for this?

3.) I'd like to encourage everyone to click the Ads on the top of the Cycle page.. This will help PP offset some of his cost involved in running the game. (for those of you with admuncher - turn it off for a bit) My current goal is to click on them 5 times per day (anyone know if they track IP's and will not pay up if the same one goes mulitple times to the site?)

4.) Lastly no propain did not ask me to beg for ad clicks (actually I'm sure he'd prefered I not but... what are evil clowns for)

now back to your regularly scheduled programing

ProPain
22-04-2006, 23:02
Thanks for all the nice words Mistfit, makes me [blush]. We're very busy improving and although a lot is changing, there's still a lot to be done. Off course I;d be happy to make a seperate forum for this, all feedback you guys provide will be very welcome as well.

As far as the clicking goes, we're very happy with all the clicks we get but don't feel obliged to click whatsoever. They do track IP so clicking more than once a day isnt very usefull so Mistfit: 4 more clicks to spend on KoC ;)

I've extended my lead in the European division. Some how I've been able to whip those Dutchmen into shape. I switched my head guy to a younger fairly similar rider. Hopefully he'll do better next season. But my team looks to be doing really good. :D

The 'dutchness' of all riders is a technicality. It will change soon.

Propain, I asked in the other forum, but no one answered... Is there going to be promotion/relegation after this 1st season?

How many teams will relegate? All five below the grey bar?

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 13:57
yup because there are 5 continental tours. So I'm guessing that the top team in the European, American, African, Asian, and Oceanea tours will get into the Pro Tour. The other's will likely relegate based off of relative points (guess) of the top teams in the continentals.

Shabbaman
28-04-2006, 14:29
Hey.

Iirc somewhere is mentioned that you won't receive training in the first week. I do have green arrows (but I see that's a bug, meaning it could've remained equal), but I do have a lot of red arrows (next to everything I didn't train).

And hey, perhaps we could ask dr. A. to fix a hattrick organizer for cycling champion [:o)]

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 14:42
I think that we are in the second week Shabba.

@PP Are any clues going to be given on how soon players pop? Also, does the Pro Tour pay out more than the continentals? I'm assuming that either it will or that selling merchandise (when it gets added) will happen more in the majors.

Shabbaman
28-04-2006, 14:46
I demand a wildcard.

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 14:53
It would be nice if the bottom two teams that didn't dominate their division "play" the bottom two in the next level up. Not sure how this could be done. Maybe a sprint off? A climbing duel? or a race on the streets of NY (pot hole riddled streets)?

Shabbaman
28-04-2006, 15:05
That's not how cycling works irl though. The promotion/relegation rules are actually pretty bizarre. They're based on the gross worth of your team, not exactly based on your achievements.

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 15:08
well then, I can buy up all of the good riders on the market and then sell them after the promotion :D

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 15:28
This is what I've found so far in the training realm..

Climb bumps Climb & Descend with no effect on Experience and negative on all others
Sprint bumps Sprint & Steer with no effect on Experience & Descend and negative on all others

Mistfit
28-04-2006, 15:52
Training I presume does not effect experiance. # of races does. This I'm sure will take a while to increase

Shabbaman
28-04-2006, 16:04
"All others"? Weird that it has an adverse effect on echelon.

Tubby Rower
28-04-2006, 16:07
it did on mine. I also noticed that my selected leader was a little different. He actually went up in sprint and climb but down in steer (trained for sprint). I'm also noticing that my Big Fat Bikers are losing weight. Is there any training that will put on weight?

EDIT:: I was looking at a few transfers and apparently training for echelon improves echelon and time while decreasing everywhere else (except EXP)

Shabbaman
28-04-2006, 23:37
This game is becoming really popular, 3 of my friends signed up tonight and ended up in the same division. Should be good for some rivalry.

Shabbaman
03-05-2006, 23:12
Ha, Team Rambobank placed 3rd, 4th and 8th. That's a lot of points. And at least Crvena Zvezda Les Corts didn't win for a change. Now, if my riders just were a little bit better (not to say, not this crappy...)... PP, please tell me I will promote after these races?

Tubby Rower
04-05-2006, 01:42
I increased my lead :D now just to survive 2 more races without a big fall. I managed 6k in prize money out of just 3 riders. :)

Shabbaman
04-05-2006, 08:46
So I might be a n00b, but an explanation of the symbols on the map might be nice.

BTW, I'm missing the point of training. If you're increasing 2 aspects and everything else is decreasing, I think it's almost better not to train. If you train, for instance, climbing, you might end up with some riders that could climb but can't do anything else. Worst is, that "some riders" is your whole team.
It seems counterintuitive as well. I can see that training climbing wrecks your sprint, but how can your descend increase if your steering decreases?

ProPain
04-05-2006, 09:28
the symbols on the map are there to indicate bonus sprint, food distribution points etc. in the original, real life race. We dont use em, so you can ignore em. I'll add a line to the picture screen to explain that. We're working on a tool that will generate course pictures for us so they will all look the same, have the same dimension and do not incorporate strange symbols. This will take a few more weeks however.

Training: Training will be changed soon. You'll be able to hire trainers that will enable you to train more kinds of training and you'll be able to select a training for each rider. This is quite high on our list of priorities, and I expect this to be done within a week/two weeks. We do have a list of 60 minor and major adjustments that need to be done, including some less visible bugs, which fight for priority. I can only say that we're doing the best we can to fix everything asap. It's a lot of work though and we have only 2 programmers, of which one is dedicated to the race engine and fixing that.

But things will improve!

Shabbaman
04-05-2006, 09:39

Tubby Rower
04-05-2006, 14:30
well at least you guys are working on it. I couldn't imagine all of the code that goes into Hattrick. it takes time to get everything running smoothly. I suspect that my success in the European tour is due to PP's comment above :)

Kemal
04-05-2006, 14:42
I understand that there will be lots of "kinderziektes" with the program and the site, so far things look pretty good and the fact that I have returned to the site from time to time means that something must be going right, since I am by no means a great cycling fan.

That said, from a players pov, imho there can never be such a thing as a faulty engine. You adapt to the input the engine needs to max the chance to see your riders come out on top, and if you can't you as a player are to blame. ;)

From a developers pov, I can understand that you might feel something is amiss with the engine yes... btw any quick way of reporting such weird behaviour anywhere? I'm not online at msm a lot anymore so rarely get the chance to voice these things personally, unfortunately.

Nice one.

quote:The following competitions didnt see their races end in a normal fashion.

The list that follows doesn't include the Asia tour, but look at the results of my race:

1 Tomas Pons Pauwkes 06:50:53 34.48
2 Luis Filipe Chapelle Team Rambobank + 00:00:00 34.48
3 Lars Kristian Chappat Team Rambobank + 00:00:01 34.48
4 Luis Miguel Bompadre Team Rambobank + 00:00:02 34.48
5 Kenji Gomez Marchante Team Rambobank + 00:00:02 34.48
6 Stanislaw Pouzini Team Rambobank + 00:00:18 34.46
7 Atsushi Ventoso Alberdi Team Grande Vitesse + 00:02:25 34.28

Yes, you're reading that correctly: a group of 6 had a lead of 2 and a half minutes on the number 7 (and the rest of the pack right behind that guy). A group of 6. With 5 from Team Rambobank.

You'd imagine that when there's a group away IRL, with 5 of the same team, that the result of the race is pretty much set in stone. So either that Pons is the reincarnation of the salvator, or my team is the suckiest suck that ever sucked a suck.

Shabbaman
26-06-2006, 12:42
I think the key to the whole game is to set a very crappy rider as your leader. Every race where I didn't make my best rider the leader I got a good result. And somehow every race ends in a sprint, and the riders without any sprint win.

Probably KR has a good idea about how the engine works, but he's probably the only one... What I posted above on may 27th gives a good description on what's lacking in this game. I really hope that it's going to change soon, otherwise it doesn't have much of a long term appeal. Which would be a waste of the money and time spend on it. I'm almost fed up with it, and I'm winning...

socralynnek

I think, the race reports will hopefully improve anything when they come.

ProPain

Testing is been done to improve the engine. I suspect better results at the start of the new season. Race logging is built as we post, this required some major overhaul of the former setup (you guys never seen the 1st one) when we changed the race engine around. Race logs are our no 1 priority to get online for the next season.

Time to wash yourself then ;)

I posted a nice frustration-driven suggestion on the CT forum. I think it's more than decent, read and comment on it please.

What was that guy's sprint capability btw?

hey guys...

sponser income..is it constant or does it vary.
Also is there a limit to how many team members you can have.

cool game(but frustrating to figure out)..wish I would have joined it months ago...maybe I would be in the upper levels instead of in a 3rd tier level.

Kingreno

As far as I know sponsoring is (still) fixed. This may (and should!) change in the future.

Don't worry about being in the third too much. You can stiill look up from where you are.

I sent my application today, but no welcoming email so far in my box. Waiting...

BTW, Propain, if you ever might want to fix this game, I suggest you take a look of the tactics Colly's team is using. I suspect he's using the same tactic every race, and whatever it is, it's hugely overpowered.

Kingreno

Colly invested heavily in upgraded bikes. He reaced level 10 Tandem-technolgy: One giant Quantum-Tandem that holds his entire team. Sometimes one rider falls off but he usually beats all others getting places 1 to 8 or so. [hmm]

Sounds like a guy in my division...But I figured out the tactic once.

It's getting pretty boring though. I know what to do, but I can't be bothered to try.

Kingreno

It is boring but it's not that I am desperate for things to do. I juts wait to see whether things will improve and will become more active after that.

shortening the season may help..seems to be about 6 to 8 weeks too long.

It's not a tactic thing it's an engine behavioural script thing. We've been working on this for ages but it's extremely complex. We've had the feeling of being immensly close for some time now but we keep running into new game breaking problems. As of tomorrow Stephko quit his job and will be on Cycling Champion full time, together with our programmer that will be 2 people with one priority : getting the engine (and the asociated game logs) to work. As we're now so far away from the current engine we can't temporarily fix that one to get better results. I know that results suck and the game is boring because of that and believe me: it frustrates me even more than you.

I really don't dare to promise a release date anymore, could be anything from tomorrow to next month depending on what we encounter. And believe me: once things are fixed I'll let you all know.

A behavioural thing? It must have something to do with late escape group forming, or something stupid like very high echelon. Or whatever. But it's even more annoying than the uphill mass sprint.

Take your time. I ain't going nowhere ;)

I think Colly is the only one that has paid supporterfees. [:p]

I landed in Division Africa 1.2 this season. Question : what am I doing there ? [hmm] I'm a European player, and didn't finish first last season, so I should have stayed there... There is something I don't understand.

They condensed the active teams into the higher divisions. You got promoted due to your activity.:) I did too.

Yes, I understand, but what didn't I land in a European division ? Or does the continent have nothing to do with where I live, contrary to Hattrick ?

OK. :) Then I'm stupid for signing up in a low European division when I joined instead of a higher division on another continent...

Let's try those African races. [:p]
