The game is good. I like it more than Civ IV.

I haven't had sufficient play-time to check out the AI, but word is that the AI is excellent. The AI is adaptive. If you equip your ships with lasers and win a battle, you can be sure within no-time the AI has equipped its ships with anti-laser devices so you will have to adapt your tactics continously. Read the reviews, collected in the GalCiv2 section of CFC.

I've read some reviews, but I'd rather take your opinion than theirs. I'll take a look at it, when/if I'm bored with both BF2 and civ4. But I'm looking forward to medieval2:total war, which should come at the end of the month. So somehow I seriously doubt I have time to take a look at this game.

Unless I get a free copy, obviously [whipped]

Een kaal peertje .... (ligthbulb) - I never bothered to buy a proper lamp for my ceiling. :D

The picture was meant for my review (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=161193) and I am careful (paranoid???) in giving information over the internet. I'll see if I can find a picture of my ceiling to post here ....

Its a great game. So far it kicks my ass on the even Ai setting. I know that isnt saying much but the look and feel of the game alongside a demanding AI make it a winner.

I asked because it is the same in France, but that is completely understandable. Now, some people here may not like this idea of European construction. ;)

I've been looking at the recent posts in the giveaway thread and there is an astounding number of 1st posts ever being in that thread. Also, Don't comment in that thread after you have posted. It could be construed as another entry and the rules state that you will be disqualified from winning.

Tubby: there is an additional "comments" thread so you don't have to post twice. And I've already deleted double posts to keep members elligeble for the prices. Thunderfall is not known for being a spoilsport to really exclude accidental double posts.
The "astounding numbers of first posters": don't worry; there will be checks for uniqueness. Of course; if you want to cheat, you can.

If your computer can play Civ4 even vaguely it'll have no problems with this game. This game is great, but I dont quite get how to play it yet [:p]

Took about 5 hours to DL the whole bloody thing (Its a valid version I bought it online before you start crying "Ahoy thar Matey!") and I got 2.5 hours to play a beginning game.

My best move so far is building a starbase next to a +5 military resource instead of on it, great work I thought :)

Wow.

quote:Digg is reporting that a website is implying that we want Galactic Civilizations II to be pirated. Absolutely not! Of course we DO NOT want our game to be pirated. We're a small company, every lost sale hurts us.

This got started because sales reports on Galactic Civilizations II have been much higher than anticipated. We've now outsold the first Galactic Civilizations in North America in the first 10 days. Last week we were apparently the #1 PC game at Walmart.

Naturally, some peple have taken the conclusion that because we don't have copy protection on our game, that we invite piracy. That is not the case, we simply think there are other ways to stop piracy than CD checks, strict DRM, etc.

What we do is provide a serial # that users can choose to enter when they install and use that unique serial # to download free and frequent updates.

Our license allows you to install the game onto as many machines that you own that you want as long as only one copy is being used at once. How many sales are lost because people want to have a game on their laptop and desktop and don't want to drag CDs around so choose not to buy the game?

Our company also makes utility software. We've been around a long time -- 14 years now. Our software gets pirated. We don't like it but piracy is a fact of life. The question isn't about eliminating it, it's about reducing it and trying to make sure that people who would buy your product buy it instead of steal it.

Our primary weapon to fight piracy is through rewarding customers through convenient, frequent, free updates.

If you make it easy for users to buy and make full use of your product or service legitimately then we believe that you'll gain more users from that convenience than you'll lose from piracy.

We realize that some people or companies might feel threatened at any evidence that implies that draconian DRM schemes or CD copy protection may not make that big of a difference in sales.

For example, we were quite disturbed to discover that the company that makes Starforce provided a working URL to a list of pirated GalCiv II torrents. I'm not sure whether what they did was illegal or not, but it's troubling nevertheless and was totally unnecessary.

All software is pirated, there's no way around it. We've been making software for over 10 years. We don't like our software being pirated. Like I said, every lost sales has an impact on us. But there are other ways to reduce it than through draconian copy protection systems.

Incidentally, the site that Starforce's forum admin linked to "prove" how much our software was being pirated we visited, followed the instructions on the site to get our game removed and the links were removed within a couple of hours. We'll continue to follow-up with them.

Starforce is a very nasty (but not very good) copy protection system. Iirc it's something akin to the sony rootkit crap.

P.S. Rik, do you mind if I move this thread to "other other games"?

No CDZ winners... :(

Pastorius

This CDZ no-winner bought it from Play.com for 17.99 GBP (which to non-abbreviation speakers are Brithish Pound Sterling)

I hope my 200 NOK customs limit is not provoked, since a quick calculation of GBP to NOK says cost incl delivery is 207 NOK. Last time it worked (no taxation). Still the game is cheaper than the Norwegian retail price of about 350 or so NOK

Shabbaman
14-03-2006, 12:01
You know, you can download it legally from the publisher's website here (https://store.stardock.com/order.asp), for $44,95.

Pastorius
14-03-2006, 12:21
Calculating for possible taxation:

Game cost in NOK: 207
Tax: 25%
Total cost if taxed: about 260 NOK

Downloaded directly: (44,95)
Game cost in NOK: 300

So I saved a few bucks, AND I get the limited edition box.

Well, the release of an expansion that got even better reviews than the vanilla version prompted me to get this game. It's actually a lot of fun! It plays like civ, but it's different. Unit upgrading is a nice tweak, plus playing in space is just cool. Figuring out what to research is nice for a change, researching the wheel is getting lame after 15 years. Try it!

Beorn
13-03-2007, 23:58
The main thing I like about GalCiv is that the AI improves from level to level. It makes it very very intricate at higher levels. The single-city specialisation of shields (production/research slider) is also a really nice feature.

A shame about the multiplayer though. How hard is it to make it PBEM-able? There's community-built multiplayer mods for some games like Oblivion, I mean, it can't be that hard to put a sketchy MP interface.

Ha! If you haven't read the story I linked to, read it now. Because apparently there's a new expansion for GalCiv2 (another one...), and that guy is currently writing a new blog (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=195920) about it. And it's just as hilarious! Come to think of it, galciv2 might be better singleplayer experience than civ4. It's a pity there aren't more galciv2 players here. This one almost urged me to skip work and play galciv2 all day. Again ;)

These blogs remind me of sulla's walkthroughs. It'd be great if we could have some of this on our site. Any takers?
