After hearing that Epic 2 wouldn’t start before long, I jumped into this game. Sirian actually played half the first turn, moving the settler to the next tile, which popped a hut, giving us a worker. Then he settled there and founded London. And that is where we started.

That start isn’t huge, but at least we have those food resources and fresh water, as well as coastal access. So that shouldn’t be a problem to tame the area on this level.

The warrior popped the hut in the desert, giving 108 gold. I say it’s nice.

A pic of London just before moving onto the next turn. We have the English’s starting techs, Fishing and Mining, as well as the Wheel, probably because of the easy level (Warlord). The situation is simple : we have food resources that we cannot use for the moment, so the deal is to research the missing techs as soon as possible. That is why I started to harvest the lake, making use of our financial trait that way (+1 gold from tiles where you have at least 2). Also notice how they now display gold coins, as opposed to gold commerce. I sailed for Hunting, so as to get scouts, and to not lose beakers into researching advanced techs too early. The worker started to road the pigs ; not much better to do for the moment.

Turn 8, Buddhism was founded far away. The worker was only roading some tiles, but after Hunting, I went after Agriculture, and was about to farm that wheat.

A German scout popped a hut right under my nose, but fortunately there was another one in the north, and he let me get it : 30 gold. Going Animal Husbandry, so as to build a pasture on those pigs.

Here a bear attacked me and plainly lost to my warrior. It seems we get some juicy bonus at this level. Bronze Working is up next. Contrary to my latest game (Epic 1), I didn’t chase Writing and Alphabet right from the start, considering it was a stupid idea.

Seeing that we get good combat odds versus animals on this level, I even attacked some of them, here a lion, killed without a single scratch.

And I met Asoka, we had a beer and did some little yoga. (TM)

And so I now knew everyone on the map, and we were all located on the same landmass, which was starting to feel very small. An appendice of what happened so far :
- Isabella converted to Buddhism on turn 9 (her turn 8 in fact, but we get to know it on our turn 9), the holy city being Madrid of course.
- Fred adopted Slavery on turn 13, which meant that he had Bronze Working as soon as that !!
- London built 2 warriors first, then the settler.

On turn 31, Asoka converted to Hinduism, and Delhi would be his holy city. And York was founded on that same year. Forgot to take a pic for some reason. It was located in the north of London, by the coast, so as to fill in the gap there.

4 turns later, London was hit by the current hype. Note that at that time, I wasn’t trying to found another city. The land nearby wasn’t all that exciting, and I had 2 very close neighbours. Instead I was focusing on buildings and possibly wonders. Wonders ? You’ll laugh about that very soon...

Not much happened during the following turns. London and York were building the Jewish facilities, as well as libraries. Peter profited from that to build Stonehenge on turn 90. Other leaders were asking to open borders more and more but I would always refuse during the entire game. On turn 96, London’s borders expanded for the third time, and Peter converted to Hinduism.

On turn 102, Confucianism was founded far away. I was a bit surprised that it would happen so early, but the tech tree has its surprises... As you can see in this pic, I was building a few units, and not just mandatory archers for city defense... Yes, there was someone that I had to kill.

Fred was the one who got this religion, and he converted right away as well. It seems that the AI does it right away all the time, no ? For the record, I discovered Alphabet on turn 103, which is only 3 turns later than in Epic 1, even though Epic 1 was on epic speed. But instead of beelining to Alpha, I had already discovered so many other techs. No trade for me, I wanted to leave the AIs in the stone age as much as possible. In fact I would never trade any tech to the AIs during the entire game. What the hell, I didn’t even trade them anything at all !! Of course I refused any blackmailing on their part.

I had kept a warrior in Peter’s backyard for some time, because, well, he got trapped there. But he was keeping an eye on that Russian copper (a resource I was missing, I only had iron and horses). So I tried to disconnect that copper, but he got attacked by a Russian archer, which lost, and then a Russian axe finished the job.

On my way to Moscow, I killed an archer. And on turn 113, the battle of Moscow commenced. Catapults were bombarding the city. Turn 114, a Barrage I cat attacked an archer in the city, and withdrew. Turn 115, the units were unleashed. A Barrage I cat lost to an archer. Then, a City Raider I sword killed a wounded spear (from the cat). After that, another City Raider I sword defeated a wounded archer.

On turn 122, I started the battle of St. Petersburg by bombarding the city walls. I had fewer units than for Moscow, and I needed a little luck to be successful there. I also killed a Russian Combat I spear guarding the copper resource with a City Raider II sword. And I chose to pillage the mine there, getting 8 gold in the process. I wasn’t sure of getting the city, so at least Peter wouldn’t be able to fight back with more axes anytime soon.

On turn 124, I learned that a Spanish city, Cordoba, was infected with Judaism. This proved me that religion can cross closed borders. In St. Petersburg, a Barrage II cat killed an archer, which was a slightly lucky move. Then, another Barrage II cat killed a wounded chariot, and a Combat II horse archer lost to a wounded spear (a bit of hard luck there, so we were even).

This got me 80 gold... and Stonehenge ! So I was the only civ with wonders again. I hadn’t hesitated in keeping Moscow, because I found it was nicely located, but St. Petersburg was a bit more problematic. I eventually kept it too, because it wasn’t so horribly placed after all, and I needed those resources pretty quickly. City development was a bit hampered in London and York, and I was lacking happiness resources badly. Last but not least : razing St. Petersburg, this RL jewel ? Never.

On turn 131, London completed the Parthenon, also with no marble. Somehow I thought that the great person points bonus would be nice over the course of the game...

On turn 132, the battle of Novgorod started, by bombardment again. I had built a few more units, because I would have been a bit short of them otherwise. Turn 133, onto the assault ! A Combat II horse archer unluckily lost to a City Garrison I archer. Then, a City Raider I sword won against an archer.

On turn 136, I founded my third city, Nottingham (second, if we don’t count Sirian’s London). The main pupose of that city was to get me furs, as I badly needed happiness resources. Also on the same turn, Seville, a city that the Spanish had founded close to London in the west, revolted a first time, supporting the English (me !).

Peter was left with only one city in the north-east : Rostov. The bombardment started on turn 137. But I needed more troops, so I delayed the final assault a bit. Turn 140, a Barrage I cat lost to a City Garrison I archer. Then, a Barrage II cat withdrew from the same City Garrison I archer. A City Raider II sword killed the now-wounded City Garrison I archer.

The former allowed much needed happiness in my main cities (ie. almost ALL my cities !), and more science out of future specialists. The latter increased the efficiency in London, which was by far my best city.

On turn 149, for the first time in the game (apart from a possible mistake on my part), I had to run science at 90%. This would almost never go below that thereafter.

Turn 197, London : Notre-Dame. Funny, they drew this one like in a mirror : in Paris, the Seine is on its right (the left branch is further away, behing some other buildings, I guess).

London completed the National Epic on turn 201. Great person points like if it was raining some !!!

Turn 206, London : Angkor Wat. This would make my priests some slightly better specialists than engineers for a long time to come (until Computers) : same stats, with priests having 1 gold on top of it.

Same turn. I took this pic of London on this turn because it would be the turn with the most great person points per turn of the whole game : 122 !!! As you can see, I was building some Jewish missionaries, thinking that it’d speed up the spreading of my religion. Apart from York, London and Cordoba, no city had naturally been infected so far. Weird. Of course London must have found out that she was running out of wonders to build.

On turn 222, London completed its second and last national wonder : Oxford’s University. Not a bad deal, considering its science output.

On that turn, I revolted to adopt both Free Speech and Free Religion, which meant that I had to abandon my state religion. I needed commerce much more than hammers now, so I think it was a good thing to do.

On turn 236, Asoka circumnavigated around the world. I didn’t care. And on turn 238, he completed the Hagia Sophia, a wonder that was already obsolete to me.

York buit the Hermitage on turn 239, which greatly boosted its cultural output. Asoka got a golden age.

I was starting to keep some great persons, either because I wanted them for a future golden age, either for hurrying a future building, either because the corresponding tech wasn’t one I wanted in the end. Still trying to figure out how this is working, and how to work around it.

St. Petersburg built Mt. Rushmore on turn 271. Yeah, cool.

On turn 273, Asoka the fool adopted Emancipation, which immediately resulted in my people getting unhappy. I don’t care if they’re unhappy, but if that means they refuse to work and to eat (!), then I’m not happy. So I had to adopt the new civic as well.

Turn 276 in St. Petersburg : the Heroic Epic, and that was it for national wonders there.

On turn 280, I discoverd Rocketery, a quite important tech, since I was aiming at the Space Race victory. York built Wall Street, since it seemed a nice place to make profit. And Isabella got her golden age.

Turn 285, Moscow : Versailles (are you following what’s happening ?). I still hadn’t built the useless Forbidden Palace, but got Versailles instead. I thought that the fountains were behind the castle, was I lied to all that time ?

Turn 288, Moscow : Globe Theater. Beautiful.

Turn 293, London : Apollo Program !! The beginning of the space race, still only 1 archer in my main cities, and no attack from any AI ??

Turn 295, Rostov : Scotland Yard. Is that useful ? Maybe in another game...

Turn 301, Novgorod : Forbidden Palace. Really, because there was nothing better to build !

London reached legendary status on turn 303 : 50,000 culture points ! All this cultural push had gained me some tiles, out of which I had grabbed 1 deer and 1 sheep.

On turn 322, I discovered Fiber Optics, which gave me knowledge of the bare world map. I hadn’t scouted anything beyond our starting continent. At some point I needed more food resources, to fight pollution in my cities, but this was greatly solved by the discovery of Genetics.

Fred got his golden age on turn 328.

I had now built some missionaries of each of my religions and every city was infected with the 3 of them at least.

Turn 331 : I discovered Fusion first, and I got a free great engineer, Benjamin Franklin. Beakers into Ecology.

I wanted to finish as soon as possible, and trying to get Ecology in 2 turns after that required some interesting and entertaining MMing in every city. It was possible to do it, by toying with specialists and putting cities on research, without even putting cities on starvation. My best cities needed to start the latest SS parts, that’s why it required some MMing.

I had planned my victory 8 turns after Franklin got me some beakers. And I succeded in that, after having left St. Petersburg on research for 2 turns, where it was supposed to complete one SS part.

After the bomb detonated. I even got the tile west of the copper tile, getting in contact with the Germans ! Note how Toldeo is now cut off from the rest of the Spanish Empire. Also note how my border got close to Madrid, the first holy city of the game !! Incredible. Of course Isabella was left with little culture output during the game, but I didn’t think it was possible to actually steal a capital city’s fatcross tiles from 6 tiles away (York). London is all powerful...

Since it’s the last turn in the game, let’s have a view of the north, ie. Mare Nostrum. The way I grabbed some Spanish tiles on the other side of the sea is quite insulting. Those cities are hopelessly trying to live under the heavy pressure of my borders. Those units listed on the left are in Madrid : grenadiers, and they didn’t even attack. I think the AI is clever : I would have manually built a few modern units in no time, before my cities could even get attacked by Isabella. Smart AI... or lazy AI ? Also note that Madrid’s tile is 94% Spanish, though I don’t think it’s because of me...

The world at the end of the game (forgot to even trade a world map on my last turn !). The Spanish Empire is rather... oddly shaped ! I didn’t even experiment with the Terra map script, because of that low level. Apart from one German city in the end, the other continent was left untouched by the AIs.

On the whole, a very peaceful and easy game. Didn’t know I would ever play a game on Warlord, but I used that to explore more of the game mechanics without being threatened from everywhere. I’m starting to have a good view of the game, so I should do better on higher levels now. If only I was building more military units... As for the Terra map script, that’s a pity, since I was looking forward to a race to the New World, but it wasn’t required at all, and only in the end did I remember that there was another continent !! That’ll be for another game... Let’s see how other people won this game. I think many will win by conquest, as this is easily done.

Also, sorry for the numbers of useless pics in this report, but this was done before Adventure 2 of course. Speaking of which, this report was written before the report for Adventure 2, that's why there are some non-fitting comments in there (it makes sense if you read them in the chronological order !). Next report will be a lot more enjoyable : more text, better style, and more interesting pics (less pics overall).

Result : Space Race Victory

On the topic of religion: that can only spread automatically to cities that do not have any religion present yet. Once any type religion is present, you need missionaries to spread other religions to the city as well.

@ Kemal : Nice to know, I'll try to check that in my games. There are a lot of things to know in this game, and that you can't find (I think) in the manual or in the Civilopedia.

@ Darkness : Thanks. But next report will be a lot better. More text, better style, maybe a theme, less pics overall, but more interesting ones. You'll quickly note the difference. ;) And this game was sooo easy that everyone won it without any difficulty. An RBCiv oddity in this regard. :D
