View Full Version : 3 player PBEM

Matrix

Anyone up for a PBEM? I personally have always preferred MP games with more than two humans, but since we're still waiting for DDPP to commence, perhaps it's nice to start a PBEM with just three people. I don't really care much about the game settings.
Preferably: normal speed, standard map size, AI's to fill up the max. #o players.

Anyone interested? :)

romeothemonk

I am interested. I am receiving my copy of civ4 in a few days, and an immeadiate game would be really cool to get my feet wet.

Ah, sweet! :D

What civ/leader would you like to be? And what game settings?

I prefer to be Napoleon, France. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/France.gif

Darkness

Mansa Musa would be nice...

romeothemonk
25-12-2005, 06:33
I haven't playe C4 yet, but I am leaning towards the Father of my Country, George Washington. (Organized/ industrious?)
Barring that, I will play as Monte, just because I like being aggressive.

Edit: I will be gone until the 27th, which is also the projected arrival date of my c4 copy.

grs

Hmm...would you take a fourth player for your 3 player PBEM?

Matrix

@grs: I guess so. The enthousiasm is there, so I take it you're all active enough to let the game run nicely.

@akots: you mean you want to join too? In that case the same counts.

Nope, thanks, I don't think the game is patched enough to be playable at this stage but may be I'm wrong. Good luck starting this one!

It's Qui Shi Huang for me then.

Darkness
27-12-2005, 14:05
So,

Darkness - Mansa Musa
Matrix - Napoleon
grs - Qui Shi Huang
Romeothemonk - Washington (Fin/Org) or Roosevelt (Ind/Org) or Montezuma (Aggressive/ Spiritual)?

romeothemonk
27-12-2005, 16:13
I will choose Monte then, as it looks like the best combination to me.
I will be spiritual and aggressive. Woot!

A side note: My brother got me c4 for Christmas, but put my old address on the the delivery stamp. It might take a day or two to get it straightened out.

Darkness
28-12-2005, 08:53
OK,

Darkness - Mansa Musa
Matrix - Napoleon
grs - Qui Shi Huang
Romeothemonk - Montezuma

What about the map settings?

Small, pangaea?

grs
28-12-2005, 11:53
Pangea is ok with me, but I would prefer standard map size as Matrix said and fill the remaining three spots with AI.

romeothemonk
28-12-2005, 16:24
I was thinking a standard wheel map, or a maze map, and filling the other spots with AI.

I was thinking Monarch difficulty. (Minor tip to the AI, otherwise they will be our pets).

Never played maze or wheel yet, but why not!?

Matrix
28-12-2005, 17:16
I'd prefer a little more natural landscape, but 'wheel' will do.

Shall I start the game then?

Not sure if romeo has his copy yet, but we could at least have a peek at our starting positions, which is almays nice :)

I got the save. But when I try to open it, the game schows a warning about the save having a protection on it against... [something to do with the mods folder] Then it crashes to the desktop. :(

grs
28-12-2005, 17:51
Hmm...I read something about a "no cheats" option in 1.52 that refuses to work with even the slightest mods. Maybe that's the problem?

Could be...

I have no mods installed, but I don't know what Matrix is running on his machine... [???]

Matrix
28-12-2005, 18:12
I did not check "No cheat", or anything else, and have no mod installed myself.

I had used the Harkonnen patch, but 'undid' it and patched to v1.52.

I currently lack my copy, but it should be here. I will check over my lunch break if it was delivered.

Same problem as before for me... :(

Odd... [???]

Perhaps you should start it, and then I'll try to load it. (Next year probably.)

I advise to post this at the bug reports forum at CFC, in any case.

That's certainly worth a try...

What settings did you use?

grs
30-12-2005, 12:24
Ah, seems the forum is back, before I am away :)

I will be unavailable from tonight untill Jan. 2nd at least; maybe untill 4th or 5th.

EDIT: Oh and since Wheel is a highly configurable map, I would like the creator to post the full settings. Maybe we could open a thread in the "Open-Threads" forum for this game.

EDIT2: I just saw the players are close to the Fab4 game we had in C3C - only that Darkness needs to stab me this time :)

I can't remember exactly. In any case the opposite of 'solid' shore line and temperate climate. Especially no solid shore line is a big preference of mine.

I can't play myself till the 2nd too, by the way.

No problem, 'cause neither can I (and grs is gone until the 4th pr 5th anyway).
I'll give this a try on monday. :)

Matrix

Makes sense in this time of the year. ;)

But I'm really anxious to play! I've tried PBEM myself, playing two turns with three civs and it's really great! You can send the savegame with the game itself and when receiving a turn, just open the attachment and the game starts directly asking for your password! [goodjob]

When double-clicking the save:
"The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed."

And then the game exits.

Edit 1: I'm reinstall the game now. Let's see if it helps.

Edit 2: I get the same error. [rolleyes] Then the problem must be at Darkness.

Which is the same error I get when I try to load the saves you generated.

I did a complete reinstall, and I patched to 1.52 again. Still the same error. I haven't got a fucking clue what the problem is, but since it apparently is with me, I suggest you play this one without me.

After deinstalling but before reinstalling, did you check whether the following dirs were completely removed?

"...\Program Files\Firaxis"

"My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4"?

If not, it might help to clean them out manually before reinstalling... It's a long shot but iirc this helped some people in the gotm as well.

Matrix
03-01-2006, 03:35
Let's not give up so easily, Darkness. ;)

@Kemal: I removed the first directory, not the second.

But now I think where the answer might be. In there, there's a directory called "CustomAssets", and since we have a problem with the 'assets' (whatever is meant by that), Darkness might want to check that directory. I found 111 directories(!) and no files at all in there. Perhaps you do have something?

The directory "Mods" should be empty as well.

grs
03-01-2006, 07:36
Not sure if that is really Darkness' problem, since we can easily play our pbem together. There is a detailed thread at the cfc gotm forum about this problem.

[wave]

I did what Kemal [goodjob] suggested and I still haven't got a clue on what was wrong, but it is fixed now. :)
I just played both my 1vs1 with grs and the savegame Matrix sent me by email on 28-12-2005.
Both worked just fine! :D

Do we want to comtinue with that particular save? I guess so, but considering grs wanted the full map specs and Matrix doesn't remember the details, we may want another try at this?

romeothemonk

I just wanted to know what the map will look like, but I can do without it, if you 2 already have that great starting spots ;)

If we make a new one, I would like the full specs. If we don't I can live with what Matrix still knows (Standard size, Wheel, Monarch, ???).

What level was the save I played anyway?

I have the save now and will play tonight when I am home. I am ok with playing this save, but I want to know the difficulty setting, number of AI, map type and size at least. Matrix can you please confirm that it is Monarch, 7 players (3AI), wheel, standard size - or tell the correct settings?

Matrix

I suggest you played that tutorial a little bit, or else you'd get scared by that religious sound in your PBEM. I know, first time I heard it (Buddhism IIRC) in the tutorial, I was in panic, so I was glad it didn't happen in my first real game. ;) Religion is scary (but I'm starting to use them (shit, a spoiler)).

Actually, my computer has no sound, so it is all good anyway.

I promised my wife I wouldn't play during the week except on PBEM's.
