OK this is my first PBEM.

Meli accepted to play

We chose 2 continents with 2 AI each.

We selected the oponent's Civ. I picked Koreans for Meli and he returned the favor buy picking Russia for me. 2 Sicientific Tribes.

Emperor game
SGL are ON,
SoZ is a small wonder
and everything is allowed except bugs with in-between turn bugs (arrows, auto-move, etc)

KR did the honors of making the map.

I said what the heck, lets move the setler 1 tile NW to get acces to more trade. We'll se what happens.

Looks like our map maker got us a surprise:D We have Pirates.

With those tribes I do not go for alphabet since I probably have one besides me, and no chances for a philo run. Lets go for wheel.

Now the bad news, I thing I did not manage my start very well. I started by roading the Ivory. That was a no-no.

After that I came to my senses and went to chop the game to get my extra food to pump setler out of moscow.
Few turns later, I notice a border.

Theodora is there. Another Scientific tribe.
I hesitate between trading Aphabet or getting 2 juicy workers in her capital. No rules, no regret. Lets buy those workers, I need to get my act together after the Ivory mistake.

This is folowed by a meeting with japanese
I take the weel and 10GP for BW and Pot. Mabee a bit expensive, but I want to change research to get a SGL and SoZ.
I go back to Bizantines and get Alpha for weel and 53G.

I do not thing Japan and Biz met yet.

Research is not on Maconery so I can build SoZ early enought to enjoy it.

Next turn, I plan to join the 2 Biz worker to my capital. A size 4 city at this point should realy help to get things moving.

I'm considering building a third scout after my granary since more exploration is needed

From now, scouts have given me: 25G, Ceremonial Burial and a warior.

I think it is a win win situation. I have given tought at both scenarios and with the quantity of food and sheild available without work seem to be enought to get a worker factory more valuable.

wow, those extra workers can really boost you. Having the equivalent of 3 normal workers this early without the pop loss and without the upkeep cost: priceless!

My continent is almost uncovered.

So my expansionnist days are over.

I've been given:
Warior code, (this one sucked a bit because Theodora already new it)
25 gold,
1 Warrior
1 Settler (St-petersburg)
Ceremonial Burial.

I will settle everything soon as moscow is now a 4 turn setler pump.

In the map, KR designed 2 great wonders that work like FP. They are made for the pirates to build since they require Wine (Rum).

Capturing them will be a great help.
They are made obsolete by industrialization.
Fist one is now completed.

Normaly in SP, I refuse, if I go in a small war and it doesn't affect the game mutch.

I should not take any chance now and slow down developpement right?

Depending on difficulty level. You need to survive for 6 turns, don't lose units or cities (run away with units) and try to kill at least one or two Japanese units, may be capture a worker. You then can get easy peace if you want and later in the game, every time you declare to Japan, you get the war happiness. Well worth the risk imo. Just build an archer or two.

I was the first one to Philo (I wonder what the hell Meli did, I researched Weel, math, and alphabet. I guess, he must had to go with potery first)

I picked a 6 turn anarchy. Revolted in Republic.

Science is good.

Currency in 1,
After that I only need, Poly, HBR (4 turns) and Consruction (6) to change ages.

Time for an update:

I'm in middle ages. I have astronomy in 2 (6 turn to resaerch it). I'm way ahead of the 2 AIs on my land.
I still not have Engineering. this is why:

I declared war on Biz couple turns. The plan is to bring them to one city. Gift them all the techs to get them to MA and hope they pick Eng. I did not did that before because I wanted to make sure I would be fighting Spears rather than Pikes.

So war is progessing slowly but smoothly. (very little loses.)
I have their capital the size 4 city under the message.
They are left with only varna.

Went fot peace and it worked[party] I give them teck to midle ages and they get Engineering. Traded that. I'm already up to astronomy on the other side of the tech tree.

So time to regroup and go for Japan. They should be a peace of cake. No need to even get chivalry

After that I'm undecided on the course of events. I know I have a good tech lead on Meli. (at least 3 techs). Those Libs realy payed off. And since i'm researching everything at about 4 turns per tech, I doubt he can catch up. So I do not want to make contact to early to decreace his tech cost.

I also have to decide on what to with those privateers. They hunt down every ship I've seen quite efectively. I need to build a pack of trebuchets to redline them as fast as possible. Those Pirates also have 2 wonders I have to get my hands on. (Reducing coruption)

So for the moment:
- Kill Japan and make this continent mine.
- Build trebuchet/Canon to get rid of theese boats
- Reasearch Inventions so I can get Leo Fast.
- Build Scientific improvement so I can maintain my tech lead.

After that the decision is unknown. Either:
A) I land a stack of Casacks on Meli's core. (Not sure I can prepare in time)
B) I start by taking the to pirates cities and wait longer before facing Meli so I don't have to face those Korean Canons.

Mabee a bit of exploration is required before choosing.

I have question for you guys about Tech Price reduction:

I'm keeping The Bizantines alive to get their free tech entering the next age.
If I undestand correcly, When Meli will make contact with them (or me), the price tech will drop for him. The Question is: if I decide to eliminate them, will the Tech price for Meli go back up as if he doesn't know them or the teck price will stay the same for the techs the Biz knew.


- I also realized his neibour just build the Great Library that he should capture soon, So I must be carefull not to give him a Great Library slingshot.

[hmm] I dunno Barbu...

btw: if his neighbour got TGL it all depends on his chances on getting it and his island on getting all the techs thru contact. If Mel is wise he will wait till the last possible time before he cant take it anymore. That means saving loads of money for future upgrades.

The tech price will go down for techs already known by at least one civ when other civs become eliminated, iirc the price is lowered as if each eliminated civ also knew the tech known by at least one other player in the game.

The plan is probably not get democracy. Just stack up and attack.
(Still going to build Newton in the capital for a science multiplier.)
Those Japaneese shpuld be history next turn.

Unfortunatly Meli has slowed down a bit, the game is not going as fast anymore (we used to do 2 turn/day, and we are down at 2 days/turn)

That's actually still quite fast...;)

Most games tend to slow down once the easy 2 minute turns of the ancient age have passed...

Small Update

Japan are long gone. I was realy lucky. On their last unit left I attack with an elite unit and Voilą I get my first Military Great Leader.

I'm still trying to get trougth those privateers. Man they are tough. I should have magnetism in 3 that will help alot. After that, I have to decide between banking to change age or military tradition to get cosacks. It will depend wether I can get trought those privateers. If not I do not need thoose cosacks yet.

GA is over. Still able to research Banking in 4 turns with 125gpt in the bank.

I met the 2 Pirates. I have to chose in taking them over (My cossacks are ready) or land directly on Meli's land. (I'll probably try to land ASAP, If I'm lucky his Hachwa aren't ready yet!)

I have a PBEM newbie question here. The turn before my GA finished I had Military tradidion in 1. At the begining of the turn, I'm told GA is over, and I'm not able to reach my thech. My question is if there is a way to know that your GA is going to end, or you have to keep track of the GA end, and adjust your thech slider accordingly?

Met with the pirates a few turn ago They are no threats. We traded world map.
Also got to new age picked up Steam power. Gave techs to Biz, Picked up Nationalism (maybe other way around). Traded.

Gifted Education to Babs, Meli's GL is now useless.

Invasion has started and Stupid me forgot to take pics.
Turn 1:
- Landed NE of the small lake. (Forest and mountain where occupied.)
- Suffered no retealiation
Turn 2:
- Razed Fetchez la vache (South of the lake) Killing 3 musquet and a spear, no losses.
- Put my stack on a hill right besides his capital.

After a deadly Battle where both sodes suffered heavy looses Melistown was Russian for a breif moment before being razed by the Russian troops.

My MeliHunters (KR version of the Cosacks ) will probably not live long as they are badly injured, but the game is probably over. I'm in the industrial Age and Meli still lacks Astro. I'll be awaiting for his capitulation soon.


On the othe rside of news, the discovery of the printing press gave the Russian another SGL. Hover Dam will not needa prebuild.

Correction I beleive it is 3 SGL I had.[cool]
I have a 5% chance since I'm a sci civ and I discovered every tech first since the early ancient age (except 2 biz free tech, monarchy and chivalry) So i'm a bit over the odds, but not that mutch.

Meli wants to continue [crazyeye].
So things to do:
- Capture de 2 piratic cities that lower my corruption.
- Destroy Biz so Meli doesn't get to trade techs (they haven't met yet).
- Destroy the Babs so Meli doesn't get a free tech if he changes ages.
- Get ToE and Hover Dam
- Build frigates to bombard all his coastal improvements.
- Probably go for comunism before WW starts to kick in too mutch. But that I'm not sure.

Meli isn't a n00b in Civ, so I guess that barbu in his 1st PBEM has proved a very worthy opponent. I'm impressed ! [goodjob] I'd say, a lesson of mastering every step in a game.

Unfortunatly, meli hasn,t played for a while. He looks realy busy, and we do not see his spam anymore. I'm still hopping to finish this game sometime.
