STARTING POSITION

I settled right away, and sent my worker to the bonus grassland. [blush2] Maybe I should have sent him to the sugar instead, I confused tiles somehow.

I started to research Writing. Darkness doesn't have Alphabet, so there is an opportunity here, that I'm sure Darkness is aware of. [groucho]

The game is moving very well, Darkness seems very dedicated, but also turns don't last long, as the starting position is rather poor, which delays the expansion phase and everything else (the game is fast on turns regarding RL time, but is slow in ingame factors regarding turns).

In fact, sending the worker to the bonus grassland first wasn't bad, and maybe good. I built 2 warriors, which I sent to little exploration before keeping them for MP. I sometimes make use of the gold hill when food and shields factors allow it. Then I built a granary ; with no food bonus spotted in the immediate vicinity, I found it best to allow A'dam to recover its population faster than to have a 2nd city first. It seems Darkness thought otherwise, as he founded his 2nd city before me, as the score showed, confirmed in a chat. A settler followed the completion of the granary of course.

The worker mined and roaded the bonus grassland, then mined the sugar plain, and I decided to not road it (unlike in other games where I always do this useless job first). Improving other tiles first seemed really important, and so I proceeded to chop the forest just north of the sugar. The 10-shield bonus was added to the settler box, for a perfect shields timing.

The surrounding area looks hard to tame : 2 volcanoes in the south (around which I'm very reluctant to place anything), many lakes, different coasts, all in all little good land to grab. With lack of exploration, I may not have the best info on where to settle, but at least it gave me more gold (science). So I sent the settler where R'dam stands in the picture. R'dam (Darkness's city, he told me) was founded on turn 27 (2670BC). I saw the wheat when I was about to settle, but found that 2 game forest on plains was good enough (and no volcano). My only fear is to realize that the city pattern won't be that good in the end. Wait and see.

The science effort on Writing is close to an end.

[blush]

Jusk asking, why did you not found R'dam one square NE of where it is now? It would be coastal (unless the fish is also on a lake), always good for seafarring, and would also pop the hut, guaranteed barbfree. Now, you'll have to think carefully because Amsterdams border will expand on 50 turns, that will not guarntee no barbs!

Volcanos do suck bigtime. Wonder why Rik put them there.[???]

I also hesitated to found there, but decided it was best as it is now. The fish is inside a lake, so no gold bonus for seafearing civs. I'm also closer to the gems. The hut would have been safely opened, but maybe I'll get a better tech afterwards ? Not sure it's a good thinking, as I intend to follow the Library route with minimal trading, so I'll be short on money (a hut could give me 25 welcome gold), and a tech would be useful now, not later (Library).

Of all the water tiles you can see in the pic, there are 4 lakes : the one with the fish, the one where R'dam is, the one before the 2 volcanoes (you can see the 2nd volcano's top, just a few pixels), and the one north-east of A'dam. The rest is salty.

Volcanoes were put by Rik because we asked a tough start with raging barbs, and he thought it would add to challenge. [cry] When he comes to Paris (if he comes), I'll welcome him in due manner. [hammer] [argue] [slap] [slay] [lol]

Seems that Rik likes volcanoes a lot.

OK, this might have been a little over the top.
But you'll thank me when lava is squirted all over an invading army...

As for me, I'm OK with vulcanoes (unless they blow up on a city of mine). They add some spice to the game. Especially one without SGL/SoZ/barbarians.

My trouble with them is mainly that AI are clueless how to handle them.

No problem Rik, as long as Darkness deals with the same problem at the same place, I'm fine.

How do I deal with volcanoes ? I never build any city next to a volcano, and I'm careful with units passing by or workers improving the tiles just around them. I find it a bit hard to lose a city just like that in the middle of the game, destroying the long investment in that (core) city, and also messing up the city pattern.

Time for an update ?

The pace of the game is slow, as Darkness is usually busy (and now on holiday), and sometimes I feel like not playing for a day or two, I don't know why...

Well, development is utterly slow, but I managed to build the Great Library, so I got a LOT of techs, and now I'm earning many dollars each turn. The city pattern is annoyed by the volcanoes and the Zulu nearby. I have to crush them to expand, but my only iron source is on a small island to the north of my land. Once I have connected it, I'll upgrade warriors and build many swordsmen and attack the Zulu. I lack horses. [sad]

Apparently Darkness is having a bad time with a civ nearby (he told me). Not much more to say, I'm in Republic I think, or soon. [hmm]

One more turn played tonight, turn 90, and in fact I've just got Republic through the Great Library. [thumbsup] I revolted immediately, even though I have no lux, I don't care.

Speaking of lux, 2 workers were roading on some mountain with gems. But during the latest IT, some barb horsie killed them. [cry] He was activated by a settler and escort a few tiles away on the NW-SE axis, but the workers were 2 tiles away, but somewhat orthogonally to that axis. Now, don't tell me it feels nice to actually remember that barbs behave like this with the standard barb behaviour in C3C, does it ? I don't care, this game stinks. By "game" I meant C3C. Fuck Breakaway Games.

I don't care. I'm listening to music and I don't care about those barbs, may they fuck me in diagonal, I like sado-masochist barbs. [thumbsup]

Game over, Krys has resigned...

Reading your spoiler, I found this very funny as I had a conversation on MSN on Volcanoes with Rik a while ago...

And how does Darness deal with two Volcanoes?
He builds a city in between the two of them and proceeds to build his Forbidden Palace there... [blush2] [lol]

Thanks for the game, Krys! It was quite an intersting game, but I sure hope no mapmaker ever puts me near them bloody Hittites again! ;) For some strange reason they always seem to ROP-rape me... [rolleyes]

This is the last turn I played :

I'm gonna lose my 2 mace, and then the Zulu will capture Amsterdam and Rotterdam. My military will then consist in 4 workers and 1 curragh. I can make peace with the Zulu, but they are so strong that there's no point in continuing the game. I played like shit.

I apologize to Darkness for such a "no-game". This was my very last 1v1 PBEM with Civ3.
