Major thanks to Rik for making the map! [goodjob]

This game will be played mostly according to Krys' ruleset (some minor adjustments have been made - no locked war, etc.)
We asked for a DG level game with just a river for us at the start (no cow/wheat/game) and a strong start for the AIs.
Continents map.
Krys will play as the Dutch, I'm Sumeria...

This is my start:

Turn 72

Good news: I've got a Polytheism monopoly! :D

This just gave me tech parity with the civs that I know. That's good, but the demographics tell me I'm still in a pretty deep hole:

It seems like Rik gave us what we asked. Not too good starts and quite strong AIs for a demigod level game... [goodjob]

First time for a Poly gambit iirc! What's your next tech, can you post a larger minimap with your best guess about the other civs? Looks like a fun game to follow.

My next tech is currency. It was either that or construction or code of laws, so I picked currency as that tends to be rather unpopular for AI's

The minimap is like this:

I know only three AI's, and I haven't had any resources to spare yet for any suicide galleys, so my world knowledge is quite limited...

I'm in the south with the Hittites quite close to my north (and very powerful). The Iroqs and Celts are even further north.

So I get back from my trip to the US and in my inbox I find a save with a really nasty surprise.... :( The Hittites have decided to RoP-rape me! The good news is I didn't lose any cities, but this has forced me into a despotic golden age... :(

Krys may just have gotten very lucky. The Hittites are very strong and I have neither horses nor iron, so the best I can build are Enkidu's and archers, so the Hittites may very well cripple me enough for Krys to get a serious advantage over me...

Turn 100

Well, the war with the Hittites is over (I only lost two cities to those damn 3 man chariots, or whatever). My GA is over also.
I am still in a really deep hole (though th demographics are a bit better than the ones I posted previously).

[u]The bright spots?</u>
- I secured a source of Iron.
- I just founded a city way up north, which will secure me horses and a second luxury (spices)...
- My free tech upon entry to the MA was feudalsm.

[u]The not-so-bright spots?</u>
- All the good Wonders have been constructed in Krys' part of the world.
- Krys recently hinted on MSN that he's already revolted to a more advanced government. I don't even know Monarchy or Republic.
- The Hittites are getting on my nerves
- The Celts, the strongest civ in my part of the world immediately extorted Feudalism the turn after I got it ( I gave in 'cause I was still at war with the Hittites then and I couldn't hope to fight of the already landed invasion force the Celts had sent (4 units in a mostly undefended part of my core, as all my units were at the Hittite front).

My core

And the demographics

[u]The plan?</u>
Get Literature in 4 turns, and switch all those nice barracks pre-builds to my cheap libraries. Then speed to republic and revolt.
After that a slower dash to chivalry and then I'll see if my knights will fare any better against the Hittites than my archers/Enkidu's did...

Turn 115

One of Krys' curraghs makes the crossing towards my part of the world. He's ahead in science, but I am ahead in everything else.
Considering the fact that he's also being invaded by the Zulu, which has cost him his military and a couple of cities, he resigns, which gives me my first ever PBEM win!

So much for "horrible losses".... :D

This was a tough game though. The AI (especially the Hittites and the Celts in my part of the world) were very, very strong for DemiGod level (which was of course exactly what we asked for, so thanks Rik! :)). It was really hard to fight of those nasty three-man chariots of the Hittites with just Enkidu's and archers, and wasting my GA in despotism isn't something I like either.
Still, after the end of the war, my empire was fast regaining strenght, and I was able to claim Iron, Horses and a second luxury (with a settler on its' way to a third luxury), so I was very confident that I would be able to do some damage with knights. But it didn't come to that...

Sure you deserve 1 victory in PBEM ! ;)

Just read your spoiler, and now I know I made the right decision to stop the game. I don't know how you can say that you were ahead in everything but science when we met, but your 550BC pic is clear enough : you have a lot more cities than me, more developped tiles, you're about to complete your FP (done when we met, so), etc... My advantage only resides in the Library. Once it is obsolete, you win. I didn't even start a FP... But it is risky to build it between 2 volcanoes ; what happens if you lose the city ?

What would interest me is if you told me how you managed to grab so much place ? The Zulu stole a lot of land, and I was left with shit. How did you organize your expansion phase ?

Well, then I yell some at the computer, curse Rik ;), and do it all over again, 'cause I am kind of stubborn.
I know it was a big risk, but it was one of the best spots. The other options were Sumer and Lagash and they were building military and settlers...

I first expanded towards the Hittites, realizing I'd get the cities south and southeast of Ur anyway, though it must be noted that the row of size 1 cities near the border with the Hittites were only founded after my war with them.
IMVHO though, the most important city isn't even on the map, 'cause it's on a small island far to the north (7-8 tiles N of the Hittite city of Alalah). That city, which was about to complete a harbour would hook up spices and horses to my empire, and a second settler was on its' way to the same island to claim silks....
