Our second PBEM against each other, and this time I'm ready for revenge. [charge]
Settings: Continents, Monarch, Standard Map, Everything Normal.
I'm the elite samurai of Japan and Paalikles is either the <s>Chinese</s> or French.
Additional Rules:
No more than one MA against the human at a time by the other human.
No SGLs
SoZ does not require Ivory and produces Horsemen, not ACs
I'll post my screenshot when the game starts - thanks to KingReno [king] for the map.
My goal: backstab Paalikles, beatup the AI, and win. Easier said than done. ;)
A little note: never trust Paalikles. He's a sneaky player who will do anything to win (then again, everyone at CDZ is).

Nice! It's settler factory time - only problem: Paal has Industrious trait, so he can get his up running faster due to his superior workers. No matter. Goal: a couple of warriors, then settler, granary, and expand, while keeping a good amount of defense.
Production set to warrior, 5 turns. Worker moved onto cow to the NW, and settled in spot with the settler. Growth in 7, Bronze Working (then Iron Working for Samurai) in 20 turns at max. I want to meet AI civs early on and trade trade trade.

ehh [blink]... you need Chivalry for Samurai :)

Yes, yes, I know that. I should've said Iron Working for Iron for Samurai. :)

Paal and I just finished a 5-turn session now. Here's what happened:
* I settled my second city by some BGs and a river. It can use one of the capital's cows if the capital gets to size 1.
* I researched Bronze Working, and am heading for Iron Working.
* I popped a hut.
Result:
http://img203.exs.cx/img203/3681/paalbembarbpop2jz.jpg
* I popped another hut and got maps (you can't see my new maps in the screenshot). I got maps of the Korean lands of whom I will meet next turn. I know their land but I can't talk to them. [rolleyes]
My lands of 3100 BC:
Red Circle: A luxury, maybe spices or dyes, I can't tell (could also be silks).
Green circle: Horses!
My world: http://img203.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img203&image=paalbemhomeland3100bc6xh.jpg
PS: How do I get links to work so I can have "My World" be linked?? [aargh]

Turn 20, 3000 BC:
I met the Koreans - we traded a little bit:

A worker will help me improve my lands. I want to hook up the Ivory in my lands asap. The Koreans have a decent start with a cow and a dye (maybe more, I don't know yet). Perhaps they will face the wrath of my Samurai first.

Turn 23: I met the Incans to the north of Korea. I have the Wheel up on them, but am down some techs. :( I tried to get Pottery to no avail. Perhaps when I learn Iron Working (13 turns) we can trade something. Paal is leading by 2 points.

Recent turn...2670 BC: Met the Indians to my NW and traded The Wheel + 5 gold for Pottery. Changed my prebuild in Kyoto to a Granary to pump out settlers.
Ginger_Ale

Turn 31: We finish Iron Working.
We trade it for Masonry, Warrior Code, and 51 gold with the Indians. The Inca wouldn't accept the deal, so I don't think they know each other. I'm now ahead of the AIs except for India, who I'm tied in techs with. I have Iron to my west, by the horses, as well as Incense to the south. I've started research on Mathematics.
So you going to be doing some war mongering in this game? This is going to be quite interesting.

Update time. Turn 69. Both Paal and I have Map Making, so it's a race to find the other continent. Knowing how mucho f a sucker Paal is for TGL, my guess it choose Literature as his free tech with Philosophy. I'm expanding nicely, and hoping to get into Republic early (before we go to Middle Ages), build up my cities, research Chivalry, and take out Indians and Koreans. Easier said than done, but I'm doing well. I have a 30+ point lead. I hope that Paal uses the Great Library, and shuts research off. If I do it right, make the right trades, and start wars at the right time, by the time we get to Education, I can be way beyond him. 3 AIs and 1 human (my continent) are faster researchers than 3 AIs. I lead in techs...
http://img150.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img150&image=paalpbem6ue.jpg -- screenshot of my lands
I have 2 luxuries hooked up, about to be 3, and 4 in the near future, with furs in the southern tundra.
There's also furs just south of Edo...
Amazing start !

The previous game with Paal you lost some cities to scouting Paaliklessian warriors. I expect you to not want that again. Any plans to counter this ?
Ginger_Ale
08-04-2005, 01:33
First off, it's continents, so I expect nothing from Paal until Magnetism / Navigation. That'll give me enough time to get some military up and running. I'll leave units around my core until I get rails - I don't want him to land units near my core and lose some productive cities, as I've seen others have that happen to them. When I get rails, artillery + cavalry would be enough to fend him off. I hope by the time I get artillery, I will have conquered my continent. For me, artillery and cavalry are unstoppable. I want to make contact with his continent first, so I have suicide galley runs starting on both sides of the continent. It'll give me a big break in tech trading, and allow him to get far behind if I trade his AIs and mine techs to go past him. I would also get to establish an embassy first...
Once Tokyo (my 2nd city) finishes it's library, (as it has a barracks), it'll start produce swordsmen to either war with or upgrade to samurai. A well timed GA is crucial.

We've made it to Turn 80, otherwise known as 1000 BC. I'll post a better report when I get the save back, but:
My curragh and galley suicide runs both sank in the ocean, which seems to be quite big. I get Republic in 9 turns and will revolt in the interturn to only get 1 'full' turn of anarchy. I have a settler pump and worker pump going, and am starting to build swordsmen to take over India. Going full speed for Chivalry.
Ginger_Ale
21-04-2005, 01:34
Another suicide galley sunk. I'm heading towards Republic, and am almost near the end of the expansion phase. I am sure I have WAY more cities than Paal does. I hope to use that to my advantage in Republic to not have as many unit support costs.

http://img224.echo.cx/img224/5263/paalbemrepublic3he.jpg
In the last turn, turn 89, I traded for Polytheism from the Inca using Republic, and then Republic and Literature to India for Construction. Now I just need Currency until the next age. I'll go Feudalism -> Mono -> Chivalry, and maybe I can get Knight's Templar.
http://img114.echo.cx/img114/278/paalbemempire1jy.jpg
I'm almost done expanding. Kyoto will produce a couple more settlers for the south, and then I'm going for war production.
I am pretty certain that I am revolting earlier than Paal. I haven't seen any increases in score for him (I've gained 10 points over him since the last report), so I think he's still Despotic.
Ginger_Ale
24-04-2005, 00:38
I will declare war on India on about turn 100 (it's turn 98). I will have 7 vet swords there on that turn, with 3+ on their way.
I entered the MA on 650 BC, IIRC.

The Indian War has started! The start of turn 101:
http://img255.echo.cx/img255/9499/paalbemprewar9vo.jpg
Battle of Madras (size 4 with walls)
vSword vs. rSpear = lose, spear now 2/4
vSword vs. rSpear = lose, spear now 1/3
vSword vs. cSpear = wins, now 1/4
vSword vs. 1/4 Spear = wins, now 3/4
Captures a settler. Captures 2 slaves.
Captures Madras.
The losses weren't too heavy, considering I was attacking across a river into a walled town.
Next goal: Delhi, then Bombay. Bangalore is up north, by some incense, so I won't go after it quite yet. I'm thinking that Korea will be my first Samurai victim.
http://img255.echo.cx/img255/3694/paalbempostmadras9gb.jpg
One possibly scary thing: in the email with the 101 save for me, Paal said this:
quote:Battle report:
Akkad captured: Renamed Flank Secured (subject to change)
Nineveh razed (stupid AI settling pattern)
Consolidation of main force before Babylon in aprox 2-4 turns
(reinforcements to counter bad RNG)
So far, RNG has been ok though
I am attacking with kniggits, what are you?
That is where I am unsure. I have very belief that he is telling the truth. I get Feudalism in 4 turns, and Mono in about 9. Chivalry will take, say, 9 too. That means he's around 20 turns ahead of me. I'm not sure how that is possible - he is still behind me in score, and it would be hard for him to research more than me, as that would mean he has more cities, which would show up as more score, so I don't believe him yet.
Meanwhile, my suicide galleys still die ... the oceans are huge!

Delhi has fallen!
Battle of Delhi
vSword vs. rSpear - wins, spear 2/3
vSword vs. rSpear - wins, now 2/4
vSword vs. cSpear - wins, now 2/4
Captures 1 worker.
Captures Delhi.
http://img45.echo.cx/img45/2831/paalbemdelhiwall7ru.jpg
They have Bombay, Bangalore, and a settler/spear pair that I have some swords following still alive.
Ginger_Ale
24-04-2005, 20:36
Battle of Bombay
vSword vs. rSpear - wins, now 5/5
Captures a settler, captures Bombay.
Can't believe they only had 1 unit...
Have some swords going after the settler/spear pair, will sign peace once I finish that, and leave them with one city in the very north. Starting a buildup by the Koreans, will declare war pretty soon against them.
Ginger_Ale
24-04-2005, 22:34
Signed peace with India for their one gold. They are now banished to an location with a size 1 city, and only desert, coast, plains, and hills around. They aren't a threat anymore. I'm building up a force of MDIs and leftover swords which I might upgrade to attack Korea. I have a Knight's Templar prebuild going in my capital.
Elite wins without a leader: 2

vMDI vs. rArcher - wins, now 2/4

vMDI vs. rPike - wins, now 2/4
vMDI vs. rSpear - wins, still 4/4
Captures Pusan.
vMDI vs. rHorse - dies, Horse 1/3
vMDI vs. rHorse - retreats it, now 3/4
vMDI vs. rHorse - retreats it, still 4/4
vMDI vs. rHorse - kills it, now 3/4

eSword vs. rSpear - wins, now 2/5

You seem to be doing well, Ginger_Ale. India gone, Korea under threat, Contact + an alive galley on the assumed other continent.
2 questions:
1 - can you post a map which includes score ?
2 - what will be your short term and longer term strategy ?
Ginger_Ale
14-05-2005, 02:02
1. Your wish is my command.
http://img135.echo.cx/img135/8719/paalbemempire25mk.jpg
I am still not sure if Paal has left Despotism, as I'm leaping ahead in score, but I assume he has.
2. Short term: Use my Celine Dions or Samurai to incite a golden age (perhaps grab a wonder or two - Smiths would be nice), and eradicate everyone from my continent. I bet I can get everyone off by Cavalry.
Long term: Build up my cities with factories and rails. Maybe I can snag ToE and Hoovers, which to me are more important than Universal Suffrage. Then, I'll wait for Transports to make my move on Paal, establishing a beachhead, building an airport, etc...but that will come later.
My main goal now: get rid of Korea and hopefully get a MGL - that will speed up conquests on my continent and help destroy Paalikles.

Met China in turn 122. They still lack Currency and Construction! I hope to meet Paal by turn 125. Meanwhile, I built this:

My second elite of the turn (had a couple elite victories earlier):
http://img230.echo.cx/img230/5232/paalbemelite5fk.jpg
This is great, it seal's Paal's fate I think. I'm racing to Magnetism, with land an army or two if I get another and some spare Samurai/Cavalry in his core.
The army is now filled with 3 Samurai, and it is (4 + ((4 + 4 + 4)/6)), or a 6.6.3 unit. Better than a Cavalry. :D
I've found out Paal is a Republic. Compared to them, we have a strong military of:
28 Workers
6 Warriors
1 Spear
4 Swords
1 Pike
1 Galley
1 Army
5 Samurai
9 MDIs
1 Treb
Wow, he must really suck.
He's behind Chivalry and Theology. I get Education in 3 turns.
Built an embassy: Still at size 9, hehe. :D
http://img230.echo.cx/img230/2885/paalbemtgl5zt.jpg
For now, I don't care if he is going to build TGL. He is advanced compared to the AIs so he won't get any free techs unless the AIs start learning stuff. He might get Monarchy...

Captured 3 new cities this turn ... the army captured Seoul. Expect to wipe Korea off in the next 5 turns or a bit more if I'm unlucky.

Right now core cities are building military and fringe ones are getting improvements.
I'm also sending 2 caravels with 5 Samurais and 1 Crusader over to just annoy Paalikles. They are a couple turns from his core/2nd core cities. I have a distraction caravel with 3 units that will make a first landing, hoping to draw some troops there, and then drop off my real (ok, well 6 units) at some other city. I have no intention to kick Inca off my continent until I get railroads: then it'll be much easier.

Anyway, not much as happened, I'll post some pics when my annoyance of 9 units drops off on Paal's shore (a couple of turns ... so expect an update sometime in 2006 [:p]).
Yes, I'm very interested to see how this ends.

Hm..
Good play. Me stupid for building tGL on Monarch, when I could have used those shields to steamroll China or something.
I was actually working for coastal protection (IIRC), so I hope you would have done little damage.
But as I see it, you would probably have won (if you haven't, check my ramblings to compare).
In our first game you were not as warmongering as in this one. I guess you changed your approach for the better...
Did I actually choose Litt over Rep? I thought I chose Rep from Phil...
Oh, and thanks for MAing with China when I was going to ROP them. You messed up my Beijing attack completely...
Damn kids

Yeah, I went to war a lot earlier in this game than the first...and ended up destroying 2 civilizations, which resulted in that big point score I had.
