here is the open thread.... and now I better get lost before Shabba names this the spoiler ;)

The game has started. At first glance, I don't like my starting position: next to a river, with grassland to the north, and plains (!) to the south. I start on the plains, I think I'll just settle there. My scout doesn't reveal any luxuries.

Screenies will follow.

btw, I'm arab.

Got warrior code from the first hut. No luxuries, but two huts is good I think.

What should be my build queue? I think I'll go warrior-scout-granary-settler.
Should I build more than 2 scouts? It's normal pangea.

scout-scout-warrior-settler or
scout-scout-scout-warrior-settler

I agree with ERIKK. Use that trait before it gets obsolete. You get settlers and cities from goody huts with a little luck.

Okay, thanks.

That's a superb starting position - clear out and irrigate those game forests, and you will grow like a madman ! Good luck (I agree with ERIKK about the scouts).

Game forests are great, but don't forget that the Arabs aren't industrious. It will take quite a while to chop the wood. It is probably worthwile though.

I totally agree on the scouts. Usually I build 3 scouts before anything else unless barbs are coming. This can only be the case when 1) You're playing raging hordes, 2) have a close neighbour. Both require some military.

Is this game dead?

Shabbaman
14-05-2003, 15:56
No, it's not. We're just not playing that much. The year is now 3150 b.c., just got a city out of a hut (but pretty remote unfortunately)

Shabbaman
16-05-2003, 11:00
Okay, so I chopped the forest with the game on it. What should I do there next, mine it or irrigate it?

Shabbaman
16-05-2003, 11:02
Oh yeah, it's now turn 22 and I'm building a granary. And let's count, I believe I've gotten three techs and a city out of goody huts.

Irrigate the game, you need the food more than the production.

Shabbaman
16-05-2003, 11:49
Yeah. If I need production I could still switch to the forest tiles of course.

Finally build my second city, although I got one from a goody hut. That one is far too remote atm though.
I'm building my third city or fourth city next to the fish, and the other one next to the game in the east. There's a lot of ivory there, that'll be my first luxury.

Those spanish have taken the only horseys in sight...[punch]
Currently researching iron working, I hope there's some iron near.

Turn 62

I'm waiting for the first Spanish city to flip. I've secured 1 iron source from the Spanish, horses are further away. I'm building two barracks, I need defences. I think I'll get me some spanish cities as well. Killer is entangled in a war with the Germans, so he's tied up atm (but he'll probably get some elites out of that war...)

What are the odds of a filp Shabba? This is a perfect excuse for you to click the link in my sig and use it!

Shabbaman
06-06-2003, 13:49
The odds of a flip, 0.47%. In 30 turns, the period in which I'm fairly sure that I'll show up at their gates with a force of swordsmen, that chance'd be 13.11%.
Actually, that chance is higher in fact: my culture is now 367, his 109. The difference is that I have temples and they don't. So, in 30 turns, with 4 temples, I have at least 120 more culture (assuming that they won't build any more cultural buildings...), even more since some of the temples are over 1000 years old. By then, the chance is about 0.63%

Woohoo!

Well, they only got 3 cities anyway, and I'm not really expecting their capital to flip, so I'll do it the old fashioned way.

anarres

Hmm, you know Capitals can't flip?

Notice that spanish city there? That wasn't there 1 turn ago... OK, what would be a good place to settle? I need the horses, but I want to keep the spanish from getting iron as well.
I doubt between settling where the settler is now, thus securing the luxury, or settling on top of the horse, near that remote city.

Shabbaman

I can see from the power graph that killer is outproducing me... This spells doom (for me, but first for the Germans...)

I'm sending this stack into Spanish territory. They don't have iron, so it must be sufficient.
Is it a good idea to switch to monarchy? I think it is, but maybe after I got the spanish capital and whipped a temple there (or is that an exploit?)

anarres

Shabba, there are no expliots in PBEM IMO (apart from ones that exploit the game mechanics, otherwise known as 'cheating').

Use and abuse, that's my motto. [yeah]

Skyfish

Whipping a temple in a recently acquired city has never been considered an exploit anyway....

ProPain

Shabba, make sure you switch to a better government asap. WAr weariness barely counts in multiplayer.

Shabbaman
04-07-2003, 12:24
Ah... I didn't mean war weariness, I just want a temple asap in the city of madrid. That, plus the usual genocide. So whipping sounds like an option to me.
