@Krys
No; these are the only IKEA items I have and it will stay that way for some time. We chose the table and the chairs on February 13th 2004 and didn't buy them until December 18th.
We had a bar in the kitchen the previous owners build. With the renovation of the block new tubing was fitted, thus the bar was taken down. We need a place to eat and to sit, so we picked up again on the year old plan to buy a big dinner table.

Saturday I'm playing the second round of the "Hoofdklasse bridge-beker" (Prime division bridge-Cup) with my club "Tempo" in Nijmegen. We play against "A.B.C De Peel".

They aren't a very strong club, but in bridge anything is possible. I am not unsatisfied with drawing them as opponents; we could have also drawn the Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV of bridge "De Lombard", " 't Onstein", "Pegasus", "V.I.V.A" or "Star".
In fact, "A.B.C. de Peel" went to the next round as their opponents in the first round didn't show up on match-day.

I'll keep you updated.

Hey I want to learn more about ogranized bridge in Netherlands,
When I was in college, I played alot. Unfortunatly when I went to a out of town university, I lost my partners and the bridge nights in the new town was not appropriate. I guess I'll pick it up again close to retierment, I think I miss it a bit.

In Montreal (and Quebec in general) the bridge life is limited to duplicata clubs and mostly duplicata tournements, although there are some team events. There is also a city league for teams, but it is mainly open to anyone.

Rik Meleet
13-01-2005, 22:27
What would you like to know ?
I myself only play on a club, not district league. And I have little knowledge of those things. I wouldn't even know what is higher; "Hoofdklasse" or 1st division.

barbu1977
14-01-2005, 05:07
It seemed like that was some kind of national championchip, and I was wondering if there where spectators, or results in the newspapers. We always heard stories that bridge is mutch more stronger in europe.
When you play another club, is it only one 4 player team from each club or is there more players involved?
I'm just courious on what is the Hoofdklasse and if your countries top players are in those teams.

Rik Meleet
15-01-2005, 22:03
It was a close match, but in the end we lost 166 imps to 156 imps.
Of our 3 teams 2 won (including mine) with small numbers, but our 3rd team, in which the strongest of our club played, had an off-day and lost big. So much that the positive result of the other 2 teams was't enough to win. We could have beaten them, and in fact should have beaten them.

My normal partner couldn't play so I played with a backup. Then you must expect misunderstandings to happen, and it did. Despite those we had a good day. Sad thing is that on the 23rd of 24 games she, while suffering from a headache, forgot to count the cards that were played and made an unneccesary error. That cost our team 12 imps. So if she'd done that correctly we would have won 154 imps - 156 imps. For just 1 wrong card played. Those details decide bridge-matches nowadays.

But all is not lost. The high scoring and the marginal difference of 10 imps gives us a chance. The best 2 losers also go through to the next round. That could be us. And if our anchor-team doesn't have an off-day like today we stand a chance.

1 week ago; my bridgepartner and I scored an amazing 74.83% on the club (in pairs). I have never scored that high.
For those of you who don't know bridge-scoring; in a strong tournament the winner has usually about 55% to 57%. I have scored about 65% before; but then the strength of the participants was not homogeneous; that moves the field further apart.

On my club the strength in the top level (A group) is relatively hmogeneous, so I am very very happy with this result and really proud of it. It was an amazing feeling; we could do nothing wrong. Everything we did got us a high score. We even made 7 Hearts with an ace outside (non-bridgers: all 13 tricks with an ace (highest card of each suit) in the hand of the opponents). If we bid a game, it could be made and we were the only ones in that game; if we didn't bid it (while we should) everyone else bid it and didn't make it.

It is not the most important result I ever had in bridge (I guess getting 8th position twice in national championships is) but it was definately the best feeling. Every sportsman knows what I mean... I hope for them, at least.

This week it wasn't so good. The score isn't known yet, but I'd be glad if we got over 50%. I fear we don't; we didn't have the edge we had the week before.

See my scorecard of the previous week. And search for the second and third highest score on the card; if I checked correctly they are 60.42 and 58.75. 74.83 is just amazing. [party]

I upgraded my laptop with an extra 256 MB Memory. I had to as my laptop suffered from shortness of memory, preventing me from having Opera, Emule, Conquests, WMP, Bridge-base online, Outlook and more applications opened simultaniouesly.
Since my mem upgrade I've had no more crashes. :)

That's a lot of apps. Mine just overheats when I do that. And I run 512MB only, but that shouldnt be an issue. I could probably double it, but I could also get a new processor and some other stuff. I need a fan though. Oddly enough it seems that my cpu is the one overheating, not the system. That info came from PC alert by MSI (motherboard supplier)

Sorry for hijacking. Nice to have more memory. Can I borrow some in May when I have my exams?

<center>Revenge accomplished !</center>

A couple of years ago I played bridge on my club with a college-friend. Let's call him "Jimmy". After 2 years he dumped me and found himself a new partner. With that partner he went on to win a National title. I was left partner-less for some years.

2 years ago I found myself a new partner and started playing again. In the meantime Jimmy became quiet a succesful player, although not top. He did play at European Championships for instance.

Yesterday, for the first time in 5 years, I sat at the same bridge-table with Jimmy again. He, of course, was my opponent. A match of 4 hands. [duelist]

Result:

Spel 13: OW 4S +1 = -650 -&gt; 14%
Spel 14: NZ 3SA +2 = +460 -&gt; 100%
Spel 15: OW 6SA C = -990 -&gt; 29%
Spel 16: NZ 3SA +1 = +430 -&gt; 100%
Average for this table: 60,71%

Haa the sweet taste of revenge. One of the best you can taste.

Looks by the scores that you beat him at card playing more than in the bidding. That's event more satisfying.

(Only 14% at 4S+1 what happened there?)

Rik Meleet
05-08-2005, 20:22
13: 4S+1 -&gt; I made an error and played back the wrong suit, giving them an overtrick. 4S= would have been 43%. More was impossible as too many pairs didn't try the game.
14: 3SA +2 -&gt; I stole a trick playing a small card from Dummy's Jxx to my Q10 and they didn't put in the A or K. :) 3SA + 1 would still have been 71%.
15: 6SA C -&gt; Nothing to do about that. Some fools missed slam with 26 HCP in E and 8 HCP in West.
16: 3SA +1 -&gt; Wrong start, allowing my partner to collect 5 heart tricks instead of the 4 he was entitled to. Bit it didn't really matter; noone else bid game, so 3SA C would still have been 100%.

ErikK: yes it felt good. But frankly; I've never held a grudge against Jimmy. He was still studying and I had a full time job. That means he could invest at least 20 to 30 hours a week more than I could. I was holding him back if we'd continue our partnership.

I wish I had never returned from holidays... [bosd]

Bummer Dude.
That is specifically why I dislike computers. And Co-workers. Heck work in general. Best jobs I have ever had involve manual labor to build things. You work 6 days a week from April to November, but you have the Winter off.
Unfortunately these never pay for diddle squat, as nearly anyone can do them. It is important to have a job that very few can do, that way they have to pay you well. (Or so the theory goes)

Rik Meleet
09-11-2005, 15:27
I'm not blaming my co-workers. In fact, my co-worker did 24 hours of overtime last week, working everyday from 08:30 till 21:00 (8.30 am till 9 pm) to get a little control. Main reason is that during my holiday the top managment decide to split the company into 2 brands and the sodtware wasn't prepared for it. That meant that (besides the daily work that has to be done) my 2 colleagues had to do an additional 16000 closures for Netherlands alone. (Not ccounting Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, England and Ireland.) Everything since 2003. That would mean 200 labour-hours extra work, at least if the info was available. If the info isn't available more time is needed to obtain the info.

In the middle of that, the server on which the application for our task is installed, crashed, meaning my co-workers couldn't do anything for 4 days. Not doing anything increases the work as people start asking: "what is happening" and "wy wasn't it done" etc. Hence the delays.

Furthermore, the "easy way" to do things has been changed as well, so to do 1 thing you need to do more, increasing the time required to do the thing. So their workload was heavier due to my holiday. On top of that the tasks took longer time. On top of that there was a 4 day period in which no work could be done. On top of that extra work was added which means about 200 hours minimal. I pity my co-workers, but I am so glad I wasn't around at the time. Now I do have to do clean-up actions still.

Whomp
09-11-2005, 16:21
See what 30 days of holiday get ya. Holy kamona!!
I take Thursday and Friday off last week and my assistant asks if my phone quit working. You take off for a month and didn't even have a clue what was going on. Life's good in Rik's world the way I see it. I have no sympathy.

Which begs the more important question did you at least improve your bridge game?

So close. So Fucking close !!!! [aargh]

Tonight I played the preliminary round of a national bridge-tournament. My regular partner has a rating that is too high to compete, so I play with someone else. And we are doing great. After 5 of the 6 tables we are around 70% (pairs score).

And then we completely fuck up on the last table.... We manage to score only 7 points, of a possible 56.

We end up with 196 point (58.33%) we get 3rd. 2nd place is 197 points (58,63%) and first place -the lucky ones who played us in the last round- 199 points (59,23%). Eliminated by 1 point. By 0.3 %.

But I won wine for becoming 3rd....

Yesterday the image on my screen went a bit shaky. Shaky in the way that was not good. It was not Electro Magnetic Interference from magnets, mobilephones or speakers; nor was it the type of shaky of a loose cable. It was the type shaky of "I'm going to die".
Today; my monitor started to smell. To stink. And perhaps a little smoke started to come out of my monitor, despiter it giving a "good" display still. So now I am on my old tiny monitor.

I need a new monitor and I think it is the time to upgrade big time. I've found this monitor and I think I'll be going for it. Unfortunately that will not happen before monday as the guy who can get it for me (at a good price) is away till monday.

Check the response time. I've been looking into LCD's also, and it seems that a lot of gamers want at least 8ms to ensure that there's no "ghosting". This NEC looks top-of-the-line quality, so your probably good. Might want to check Tom's Hardware to see some tests -&gt; http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/06/06/finding_the_best_19/

I've just come home from the 6th -and last- evening of the Hoofdklasse (main class) districts pairs competition bridge. 14 teams were participating. The leader after 6 rounds promotes automatically to 2nd division; the 2nd 3rd and 4th place go to Utrecht in June to play a full weekend of promotion-relegation games.

Our results were:
Session 1: 10th
Session 2: 1st :)
Session 3: 12th
Session 4: 1st :)
Session 5: 13th (last, due to 1 pair's absence)
Session 6: 1st [crazyeye]

Overall: 4th.

Very unexpected to win 3 sessions for me, it's my first ever competition (my debut, so to speak) and the level is quiet good. I'm satisfied with 4th place and I am estatic about winning 3 sessions. Now if my partnership can get a bit more consistency in our performance we have a chance to actually promote.
But now: party-time [drunks1]

Welcome back from London and Merry Christmas

I just heard -first thing this morning- that there will be mass-firing in the company I work for. There is a large %-age chance I'll get fired.
Happy holidays. :(

An optimist might consider this as an opportunity to find a better job. :)

Frankly I don't know what to think. It's always been clear to me that I'd leave the company sooner or later - I have plans on how to fill in the workpart of my life for some time now. In order to accomplish that some changes will have to happen (One of them is marriage, another is moving houses, and some more requirements).
What it is, I don't want to reveal yet. In the current plan of my life it would be possible in about 2 years.

Being fired means a good package which is always better than leaving yourself. However, since the above conditions aren't met in about a year I'm doubting whether this could either be a reason to make it sooner than 2 years or a big setback to the plan. For instance - buying a house means getting a mortgage and not having a workcontract that lasts "indefinately" means getting a mortgage suddenly got a lot harder or more expensive. Furthermore, if I am to be fired it will most likely be in September 2007. Since the marriage-date is somewhere early December and the honeymoon immediately after that (and lasts several weeks) I don't think finding a new job for Oct and Nov is very feasable.

I work in between 2 departments in the company; 1 department will be really hit hard - the other is unknown (but they will be hit "softly"). Uncertainty is upon us, my friends.

Sorry for not making a lot of sense - emotions are influencing my writing

Oh yes, tis true you told us about your wedding plans next year, congrats again ! :)

Maybe starting to search for another job now could be a solution ? Or wait for the definitive firing plan ? I don't know.

Well sorry to hear this my friend.

There is a common phrase here that goes "That which does not kill us, makes us cynical old bastards who sneer in the face of holidays"

It's not that well known. I am sure that you will not be fired, I have consulted my horiscopes and there was nothing there about it.

[u]Plan of action</u>
1) Buy a house now. Don't let anyone official know of the possibility of you losing your job.
2) Relax. You may or may not get fired, if there is nothing you can do to influence this forget about it.
3) Stay at your job until the very end. Getting made redundant is MUCH better than quitting a job.
4) Find some random tramp near you and beat the crap outta him. Will make you feel better.

Ok? All sorted now?

[meli]

Perhaps I want to be fired. In the meaning of: "I might not want to work for an empty company anymore". If 80% of your co-workers are going to be fired, than staying behind is no fun anymore.

1) Sorry - since I know (and that is proofable) not mentioning it is a reason for the mortgager to penalise me.
2) I know
3) I garee
4) Brian May looked like a tramp in Harrods. I'll just ban someone at CFC.

Melifluous
18-12-2006, 16:37
I still think beating the crap outta Brian May would help, but you're the far-left socialist [:p]

Anyways if you ever need somewhere to stay in England give us a shout.

What do you do for a job anyways?

Eeeek Rik, that's really crap news to return home to. It happened to me a couple of years ago, they announced mass redundancies just before Christmas and didn't tell anyone until the end of January. I survived but it made for a hell of a Christmas. I hope it works out for you.

You're sort of in the IT business right? I thought diplomas didn't count in that sector. But in all seriousness, are you afraid you might not find a job?

That's not it.

I don't know if my name is on the list of people to go.
If it is I don't know on what date I will be fired.
If it is not, I don't know if I'd even want to stay when 80% of your colleagues just got fired.

(Just a very short summary - in reality it is far more complex).

On thursday we've had an echo for checking whether many of the baby's bodyparts were ok. We are so thrilled to know that everything is perfect. Brains, back, nose, heart, kidneys, feet etc. Everything that needs to be present is, and nothing that shouldn't be there isn't.
So far this has been perfect.

We have been extremely fortunate. The baby was conceived at the first moment we were ready for it, so unlike some couples who have to try and hope for years we've succeeded in 1 week. The pregnancy is without any complications and without morning sickness or anything else bad that you hear about and all tests on the baby's health so far have been perfect. It's unreal and so extremely good.

And now we also know the baby's gender (since we've indicated that we wanted to know). My wife and I were 99% sure we'd get a girl but the echo showed that the baby has a penis so we were wrong there. :)
Time to put all the pink paint for the babyroom on marktplaats.nl and we can put all girls names into the fridge and start thinking about nice boy names. ;)

I'm so thrilled, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BABY BOY !!!!
(a baby girl would have been perfect as well; it really doesn't matter; both are fantastically great).

You could always try some old grandma techniques.
