START

This is a Deity level game. We start we two settlers.

Kingreno, the map maker, balanced the game some more by distributing
the resources and luxes a bit. In our last game he gave the AI's
lots of cows and wheat to have them grow faster.

This game he did more: he put us on toundra to make us a slower in
expansion:
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/ERIKK/20041218113413_evsb6.jpg
25.37*KB
But after some scouting (we are in turn 19 now) it seems we do have
good spots with 3 luxes within settling range and one lux a bit
further away. There are also plenty of bonus resources.

I met the Japanse in turn 11 and the mayas in turn 16 but was able to
trade only one tech. They are both ahead in tech.
I had some misfurtune with the cultural expansion: I popped barbs and
they raided my cap, losing 1 pop in the process. In the same turn I
took the gamble and popped two more huts: both barbs, that's a 3 in a
row. But as told: I met 2 civs in the turns after that event. I hope
it attracted more AI's and that they are on my way! ;) Also both
my barb-popping warrior survived, so I am still scouting with 4 warriors!

I got the feeling that this will be a fun game. I am considering a
lux gamble and head for those 2 spices, 3 furs and 2 ivory ASAP.
Together with the 2 wines I will be able trade 5 excess luxes in the
mid game. If I manage to grab the 3 ivory in the east that will rock!

Kingreno

Poploss is a terible thing in the eary game. Good thing you had two settlers so at least one city could keep going!

Will you head for the SoZ again?

ERIKK
18-12-2004, 12:17
No I dont think so - I think I go for rapid expansion and skip the granaries
(I have no pottery and an not researching it). I am thinking on how to
proceed: quickly build some cities near the cows and wheats and then next to
the nearby luxes (the conservative way) or sent lone settlers to those distand
spots and immediately grab the far away luxes... (something different ;) )

Do we need ivory for the SoZ in this game?

Kingreno
18-12-2004, 12:30
no ivory is needed!

hmm. how can you have rapid expansion without grannaries? I can see some very nice spots that have both the production and growth needed for a 4t-setfac, if you build no grannies I fear you will not expand fast enough...

Oh and what's that with the german capitol?:)

ERIKK
18-12-2004, 12:34
Yeah, I saw it - "eat me"... What does it mean? That city is on size 4 already, I hope this
doesnt mean the Germans cant expand.

Rapid - expansion: I mean build 2 more cities first and then granaries in the core. By that time
I should have obtained pottery.

ERIKK

Turn 23

In turn 20 I contact the Celts in the north and in turn 23 I
see the Maya lands and make contact with the Iroquois - they
have Alphabet - it drops to 5 turns. I buy it for 5gpt + 17
gold and trade it with Japan for The Wheel and Warrior Code
and then trade The Wheel to the Iroquois for 45g + Pottery.
I gain 4 techs + 28g for 5 gpt. On this (Deity) level this is
a blessing for now. I continue my research on the Aplha path but
decide to stop my run on Philo and as Beam (mr. Philo gamble)
prolly is researching it too. I cant research Writing at 100%
and Beam prolly has contacted the Iroquois yet and traded Alpha
already. I think going for Writing is a bad choice.

So I go for Mathematics and Currency.

I am happy the Iroquois arent my neighbours. They seem to live
'behind' the Mayans (my eastern neighbours). The Celts or the
Japanese are my nothern neighbours and I hope I dont have any
western neighbours (looks like that).

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/ERIKK/20041218171529_evsb6_23m.jpg
15KB

The Iroquois and Celts are doing well - they are on 4 cities.

Looks like the Germans really are on an island, prolly at the
center of the map. Their cap is still size 4 and they suck at
score.

So scrapping the Germans I only miss Russia (Beam) and Mongols,
both the expansionist civs. I guess I will meet them soon. For
now, my early explorers did OK; I am top dog on techs and that
in turn 23 - Beam will not be able to block me out for now.

On the pic below I drawed my expectations on the map and civ
locations based on current knowledge. I assume Beam and me are
on the opposite of an inner sea on a Pangea (as requested). With
the piece of land in the middle/northwest I assume there 3 AI's in
the north-northwest

Turn 40

Things went as I expected. In turn 24 (!) the Germans built the
Collosus. Their capitol is only growing - no settlers are being
built apparantly.

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/ERIKK/2004122095738_eatme.jpg

I spoke to Beam and it looks that I am not doing well. He had his
granary online in turn 18 and is on 5 cities now with a 6th settler
almost finished. This means he did not build a lot of scouts first.

Anyway, as I had to deal with barbs and got the cap raided; my start
was a bit tougher but I am doing ok now. I will have two granaries
soon and will be able to do the right land grabbing.

The AI's are expanding very fast (as expected). Beam told me his
neighbours are the Mongols - the civ 2nd on score. I havent met the
Mongols and Beam yet. The Mayas have blocked the passage already.

Turn 46

In the last inturn Beam met me. He lacked The Wheel. But in this turn
the Iroquois finally wanted trade Mathematics. I get it for 65g +
13gpt which is a nice prize. But - as expected - in the trade round
it nets me 39g, HorseBack, Iron Working, Mysticism and Writing. Now I
am on par again with the AI and 6 techs ahead of Beam.

Turn 52

I barely beat the Mayans to the spice spot in my east! Unfortunally I
had to settle on wheat but there are plenty of those over there.
Thank God that settler-spear combo turned around and left to the
southeast. That was in turn 48 btw, in turn 52 I settled near the
ivory which makes 4 luxes in reach. I now have two settler-warrior
combo's on the moves. One is going for a cow/iron spot in the east.
The other one will try to beat the Japanese and Celts to the spices
in my north

Wonders:
Germans: Colossus
Japs: Oracle
Celts: SoZ
Mayans: Pyramids

Turn 62

Too bad - Beam researched philo and traded it with the Japs. He then
bought CoL and traded that too, netting him IW and Math. I decided
to trade the 3 remaining old techs I had with him for CoL, Philo and
8 gold. We are now on par but I have been researching Currency for a
while now. Some AI already have Const so I expect us to swap to the MA
quite soon...

In turn 60 Beam tells me the Mongols and Iroquois started fighting.
That sucks, the Mongols are his neighbours. In turn 61 the Iroquois
demand money - I give in. I fear that they bribe the Mayas against me.

Meanwhile Beam exploded in score: he must have settled a load of
cities last turns.

All in all these turns were a good news story for Beam. I had a small
succes: I found another lux! It is a new fur and I will go for it! ;)
It is located in my northeast between the spicy spot and the ivory
spot (which the Mayans took).

3 (soon 4) warrior/settler combo's are gonna claim all the land NE of
Istanbul. Let's hope we make it before the Mayas grab it.

Latest addition in the lux collection!

[u]The lux department:</u>
If I grab that fur in the future I will have:
1 + 3 = 4 furs
3 + 1 = 4 spices
2 wines
2 ivory
Note that I haven't scouted my south yet, there might be more goodies
over there! ;) There are also 2 iron and 2 horses nearby.

Beam and me are both suprised of the vast part of unclaimed land west
of Beam, east of the Celts. It is good land and contains luxes! We
will see what happens. Beam and obviously a lot of AI's will be going
there soon I guess. The light brown in the upper right are Beams
borders.

Turn 72

Last 10 turns big things happened. Around turn 68 I was able to buy
Currency from the Iroquois for 17gpt. Happy as I was I bought it
expecting to be able to trade it for 3 more techs (const, mm, poly).
But no! The damn Celts wouldn't trade constr with me, even not for
10gpt + curr. So I got stuck with a bunch of money, mm and poly (and
curr) for 17gpt. Now I can research constr only at 40%. One turn later
Beam got Literature and traded himself into the MA. Now all but me
are in the MA. Well, thank God my timing was right. If I would have
waited longer things would have been worse.

Meanwhile I keep on expanding and it seems there is no end to this
map. It is so big that I still havent found the Mongols. (I see their
border next to the Iro capitol.)

Seems that Beam has even more space then I have due to his settling
style: he has more cities than me but pleanty of lands directly to
his west.

Looking at me with 2 iroquois settler combo's in my territory, mayas
all over the place and Celts and Japanese snooping around, I bet he
will be overrun by AI units real soon!

South of my capitol there is more land. I am grabbing it as we speak
but already two Maya cities have been founded there and I think 1
Iroquois settler is gonna make it too. Another spice resource and
another horse will be mine though.

These AI's will be hugh. It will be difficult to attack and conquer
them. Check the map and see for yourself! ;)

those), some barracks -&gt; horses, some extra temples, some marketplaces.

Yeah, on this map I am very happy to be Industrious! Lots of tiles

Turn 82

Last ten turns a lot happened again:
- in turn 80 I finally met the Mongols, they are
still at war with the Iroquios.
- a lot of new cities were founded by me and the AI,
Beam is (noticeable) slowing down his expansion
- in turn 80 I managed to buy Constr from the
Iroquois for 160g + 13 gpt. I drew Feudalism and
was able to sell it to the Mayas for Literature,
Monarchy, Monotheism, 63g and 34gpt. I also sold
it to the Iroquois for 4gpt + 210g. This made me
advanced in tech and able to buy near all embassies
and able to research at 100% again. The rest of the
civs are poor and lack either Mono and Feud (Japs,
Celts) or only Feud (Beam, Mongols). Needless to say
that Beam got Monotheism and sold it to the Mayas,
Mongols and Iroquois.

Initially I set research to Chivalry but one turn
later I set it to Republic as I realised I would not
be able to make enough horses for upgrades and the
AI prolly will not trade Rep for Chiv. Beam ought to
be first with Rep but I don't have much options.
Looking at the prizes, the AI prolly were researching
Engineering (Mayas) and Feudalism (Iro's).

One strange thing on this map is the fact that the AI
seem to have a strong preference for the western/south-
western shores of the innersea. Check the picture and
look how cramped they place their cities. I have two
cities in the Northeast but cannot have a harbour
at the innersea anymore.

Coast:

There are 2 more settlers underway but that is really the
last of them. My core is set on marketplaces and after
that they will produce barracks and horses. Some border
cities produce libraries now and one city is set to the
FP. The rest will finish workers (I will have +/- 28
workers) and after that it is barracks + horses or only
horses (depending on the their production capacity and
forests nearby).

At last a look at Beam: he hasn't expanded that much but
I saw his capitol fluctuate in size. Earlier he told me
he had room to expand in his south so he prolly has been
filling space over there (before the Mongols do) first.
Since the last time I noticed only 1 extra city though.

turn 92

Not much happened last 10 turns. [hmm] The war
between the Iroquois and Mongols ended. Looks
like the Iroquios captured Tabriz.

In turn 84 there is a Celtic threat: we give them
Monotheism or else. We humbly give them what they
want and in turn 85 the Mayans have Republic; Beam
has no Feudalism so I guess they are the first.

The first trade became possible in turn 86: we trade
spices to the Mayas for 3gpt + 20 gold and ROP. Also
suddenly the Celts have Republic and want to trade
it to us for Feudalism. We get 23 gold bonus and a ROP
from them! Swap research to Engineering. Two turns
later the Mayas and Iroquois have Chivalry. I have
another lux free and the Mayas have a lux free but
no deal is possible (they want too much). In turn
89 we trade spices to the Iroquois for 3gpt and 71
gold en in turn 90 furs for 5gpt and 20 gold. And a
turn later we trade Ivory for 5gpt and 30 gold. The
turn after that (turn 92) a deal of 19gpt from us to
them ends, getting me to +37gpt at 100% research.

trading routes
Last ten turns we got some money for a ROP with the
Mongols and Japanese. All have an embassy now
(except the Germans of course). I am connecting
more luxuries as we speak: from the looks of F4 screens
I got the feeling I was sitting on a big cash cow. And
I was right, though I am only trading to 2 AI's for the
moment.

Too bad the harbor and ship building is slow; the shore
cities are quite new (young).

All AI's are polite now. :)

104: we enter anarchy (6t). Set all cities to governor on food. Mongol
trade route now active. Great!
105: Sun Tzu for rhe Iroquois. They have peace with the Mayas. They
swapped a border city a couple of times but both gained nothing from
that war.
107: Sistine for the Celts
110: Finally a good trade deal with the Mongols: dyes for furs +
spices + 17g. This is our 5th lux. We are in Rep now and need it!
Micromanage all cities, gain some gold and shields.
111: Beam got sneaked by the Celts - THE most powerfull AI in the
game and they have SoZ.

Beam is average compared to this (BTW 2 turns ago the army were 7 horses and 2 galleys):

This sucks: this damn spoiler is a waste of time, I loved playing the map though!

Thanks to KR for this great map and game! :)

Beam
05-01-2005, 20:58
Very nice spoiler erikk! Sad it ends this way.

Your conclusions about Russias expansion policy are absolutely right, one of the reasons expanding S first was a Gem on the Mongolian border that could be acquired by founding a city next to it. Expansion after turn 82 slowed because of Lib construction.

As you can read the Celts sneaked just after becoming Rep. :(

Kingreno
05-01-2005, 21:20
Great spoiler Erikk! Many pics sure make the thing easier and more fun to follow![goodjob]

In retrospect, this thing can happen! There are 6 AI in the game and 5 were on one landmass, it can always get agressive. Easy, but Fair, to say is that Beam maybe should have made some more units. He gambled and then you win some or lose some. That is the game!:)

If you decide on #7, I'd be honoured to make the map![cool]

Beam
05-01-2005, 22:56
We already agreed on #7 :). I asked Erikk for a small break however since I'm picking up work again and the pbem volume is still based on being home a lot. Would be very happy if you can make the map KR! :)

About the gamble on number of units: I've been able to withstand the attack for about 3 turns, turn 4 showed about 7-8 AC's and 6-7 Gaelics (not counting damaged ones). By that time there already was a massive drain in forces. Scorched earth usually buys some time before peace can be negotiated but here the Celts did not even want to talk after 9 turns. Had I had an army large enough to counter the attack I prob would not have been able to keep up in tech race due to the burn rate on unit upkeep.

Also, the period around anarchy is where a player is most vulnerable as prior to the revolt the focus is more on switch from building units to improvements than on building a large standing army and just after anarchy focus is more on growing cities to 7+ / completing followed by unit construction later. Maintaining balance between units / techs / improvements is the challenge in Civ and in this part of the game like walking on a wire. Sometimes you fall of.

Kingreno
05-01-2005, 23:04
I understand the strategy completely beam, and GS with AC is a rather annoying combo as it races through your lands at high speed.[aargh]

Lucky number 7! Any thoughts yet or is the donutshape holier then the grail? I could make it something special, unexpected. [cool]
