Starting position:

I know I built the second city far away. But in this case I thought it was best, since it's just a peninsula. But it seems like the best spot. Also to get the wines.

Third city will come three tiles SW of my capital.

imvHo you can fill the gap with a city on the river next to the bonusgrass and forest, without it being a bad spot

The land around me is to die for, but those barbarians are annoying. I'm thinking about doing Warrior Code after Bronze Working, just to be able to build one archer to kill 'em all.

Stay focused on the BIG picture ;). But actually WC does not sound like a bad idea, since none of your opponents has it and it's not a very likely tech to be popular for research so it might be valuable

That's brilliant land Matrix. All those great spots and on rivers too!

First of all my main land.

I've made contact with The_Mole/Arghis some time ago. This turn we traded: my Iron Working for his Writing.
I've immediately established an embassy:

He left his wheat alone. [hmm] Not very handy, though I realise I'm not a brain myself either. [blush]

And the map:

The entire map. ;)

I have eleven cities and just four warriors. [mischief] But I'm building a lot of barracks and spearmen now. I'll connect the iron soon, so that I can build Gallic Swordsmen. I'll have Map Making within a few turns and will build galleys then as well and attack France very early. ;) I will now send akots an e-mail to ask for a peace treaty. I think it's our mutual interest not to attack each other, but attack France and Japan before they can use their UU.

I am in negotiations with akots (Sumeria) to form an alliance, so that he'd attack Banzai (Japan) and I Arghis (France). My argument is that akots and I have ancient UU's and Banzai and Arghis middle age UU's, and we'd better not waste our UU's on each other and prevend them from ever using their UU's.

But then Banzai contacted me and said that akots and Arghis were joining forces. Akots told me he and Arghis had a scientific agreement, but saw the good in my proposal. So now I'll try to convince Banzai to attack Arghis along with me, so that akots can atttack him in the back. [lol] The downside of it might be that it costs akots less to conquer Japan than it costs me to conquer France.

...[slanteye]...Thinking further, akots and me are probably ahead of Banzai in building up military. So with a little luck akots and Banzai will waste their forces on each other on the moment akots drops his stack. We'll see how it goes. :)

It's fun to negotiate on two sides though. [:P]

Domestic situation: every city has one spearman and I have one Gallic Swordsman. I'm building temples and barracks in all cities that don't have one yet, and then will build Gallic Swordsmen, after that Gallic Swordsmen, after that Gallic Swordsmen, after that Gallic Swordsmen... [evil]

Oh, and galleys.

Akots has deployed a stack of units in Banzai's territory without declaring war. :(

Anyway, I have a question. I wanted to post this yesterday, but CDZ was out. Now we're already one turn further.

As you can see on the picture below Arghis is watching out for me (galley, spearman). Would that mean I won't have a chance to deploy my troops west to Chartres and should I sail on? He's probably expecting me there.

In short: what line should I follow? Yellow or blue? Or go on even further? I have 11 Gallic Swordsmen and 3 spearmen, by the way.

I'd use the blue line :)

Well, whaddayaknow?! I first attacked Rheims and conquered it, and then conquered Dijon too. [yeah]

Here's the battle report:
In Rheims:
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-4 vs Swordman (4/4)-2
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Swordman (4/4)-4
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Swordman (4/4)-4
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-0+1 vs Swordman (4/4)-4
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-4 vs Swordman (4/4)-1
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Swordman (3/4)-3
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-1 vs Swordman (2/4)-2
Rheims taken. North of Rheims:
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Swordman (4/4)-4
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-3 vs Swordman (4/4)-4

In Dijon:
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-3 vs Spearman (4/4)-2
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Spearman (2/4)-2
Dijon taken.

Southeast of Chartres:
Galley (3/3)-0 vs Galley (1/4)-1

He attacked my stack of galleys, but didn't send me a battle report. It doesn't influence my moves, so I just asked him to tell me how many boats he used and survived. Strangely enough he didn't attack my stack of GS & spearmen. Perhaps he'd only be hitting spearmen and therefore thought it would be best to park them in Rheims.

Now let's see...
He lost seven swordmen and I just two Gallic swordmen. Not bad. :) There's one red lined left in the open, so that one will probably get killed on his turn.

I am keeping Rheims and Dijon!
Why? Because his horses are just above me and I'll pillage that square next turn. Then he won't be able to attack me and I have enough GS left to eliminate any attempt of him to reclaim his cities. The galleys are on their way home to collect more GS, which are being built very rapidly, because I'm now in my golden age. :D The next load should arrive in four turns already. I'm willing to take the chance of a flip within that period. After that I can give him another killing volley. [cool]

More pics please! [cool]

Btw, strange that Arghis apparently moved the reg spear away from Dijon, and instead put a vet spear in it, whereas that one would have done a much better job defending in Rheims, it would seem to me, considering there are walls there... and the reg spear itself has disappeared (to Chartres?) it seems? [confused]

I think I made a mistake and it should've been:

In Dijon:
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-3 vs Spearman (3/3)-2+1
Gallic Swordman (4/4)-2 vs Spearman (2/4)-2
Dijon taken.

By the way, these 20 turns of Golden Age I will micromanage, because it makes a big difference whether GS are built every two or three turns. ;) One city had 19 shields and now has 20. And there are other cases.

Pictures will follow in a minute...

Hehe, you make it sound as if micromanaging is something awful... believe me, it's really actualy quite enjoyable...

...in my opinion. ;)

Do as you please, but I don't find it enjoyable. [tongue] I was hoping when Civ3 came out that they'd let shields get left in queue, like in Alpha Centauri. When building a 40 shield GS with 19 shields per turn you'd have a GS on the third turn and 17 shields already in the production box for the next production. That would make micromanaging unnecessary.

I actually share Kemal's opinion, as I find micromanaging something enjoyable. It's not extreme pleasure, but nice to do nonetheless. [groucho] There would too little to think of in this game otherwise. But I now find that Civ3 isn't suited to micromanagement, as too many stupid things of all kinds screw MM all over the place (yes, see my rant of last night). I hope that in Civ4 there will be less MM but still some, overall better MM.

Good luck Matrix, you have the edge against Arghis ! I'm not sure what you want to do with his lands afterwards, as they will be really corrupted and all. [hmm]
