I got it in about 30 seconds, which is weird since I'm really not very good at chess...

It's actually a very simple logic puzzle if you work out the possible moves the king can make. :)

Certainly you are right. Knight on b6 switches places with pawn on a5 and Bishop on e6 switches places with pawn on d6. This will make it possible.

I found Ribannah's problem !

Queen to E4. So :


1. Qe4

if 1. ... e6
2. Qd4 mate

if 1. ... e5
2. Qc6 mate

if 1. ... Be6
2. Qf4 mate

if 1. ... Bd5
2. Qd5 mate

if 1. ... B other
2. Qe7 mate

I don't see it all yet, but black has white checked atm, right? So white has to move King to either C8 or more probable E8. Black moves king to someplace, but I can't see mate in one after that

(so I'm prolly wrong here :))

The full solution is written:

1.Qe4 threatens 2.Qxe7
1...e6 2.Qd4
1...Be6 2. Qf4
1...e5 2. Qc6
1...Bd5 2. Qxd5

Note that in the first two replies, the black pawn and bishop are in each others path, thereby making the mates possible. This theme has a name: it is called a Pickabish.

Also notice the changed mates compared to the foreplay (if it would have been Black to move):
1...e6 2. Qc5
1...e5 2. Qd7

Finally, there are only 7 pieces in total. A problem with 7 pieces or less is called a miniature. :)


Annares, Black is supposed to try and hinder White in accomplishing his task. There are also problems where Black is working with White (a so-called helpmate), but this is not one of those.

This muSt be an Amsterdam Red Light district bear, ProbAbly taken along by a 14 year girl, victim of the infamous provincial loverboy network. Beer is dutch for bear, and seeing her profession I Must be right on the spot :).
