Settings, continents, Kemal made the map, thanx!

I play the Greeks, while Beam plays Sumeria.

This will be tough, the Agri trait is not to be underestimated! I expect to loose soem serious terrain in the beginning but hope my commercial trait will make up for it. Also, I do begin with Alphabet compared to Beams Pottery. IF I get to Philo first, I have a chance.
I do start on Pottery first though. This strat needs a grany.
The start:

I immediately start a setler. It will head towards the goldhill.

Some turns later:

Veldhoven was founded. I meet the Americans on turn 21.[cool]. I trade them Alpha for masonry and we have tech parity now! Abe turns to cautious as well.
The small part of the world I have explored now has good potential. I hope Abe is not too close to the south. I need the Spices at all costs.

The game progresses fast!:D

Beam took a steady but heavy lead in the early years of the game. If he got even slightly the kind of start I had he'll use his agri-trait to the fullest! And I have no doubt Kemal made fair starts. This meant he was already leading by 40 points after 30 turns and rising ever since. However, The Mighty Greeks did well, expanding rapidly and building granies! Yet the most important thing is we achieved our goal and got to Philosophy First![cool]
We picked Code of Laws as a free tech and now, the Republic is only 42 turns away! Better news is that these newly acquired techs netted us tech parity with our neighbours.
Our Neighbours are the Americans, the Byzantines and the Chinese. After trading I got a LOT of techs:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/20041019193057_Philofirst.jpg

I am up Philo on everyone and up Math on Byzantines and Chinese. Also, I am the only one with some cash in the Bank!

The lands:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/20041019193248_Philofirstlands.jpg
108.09*KB

Waalre will send out some Curraghs, while Valkenswaard and Eindhoven will build settlers and workers. Veldhoven is also a 2-turn-workerfac, but vulnerable to dissease. The rest is on Rax, I need some form of defence soon. Theodora is already being a bitch.
The Minimap:

With additional roads and new cities the Republic is due in aprox 30 turns. Our goal is to reach that form of government without being attacked by my rather touchy neighbours.[thumbsup]

well well.

fastpaced, turn 80 already, and things are grim on my part of the world. While Beam builds Libs (Urk in top 5) the greeks have their hands full on rather annoyed Americans and Chinese forces...

125.57KB

Both China and America Demanded techs and moved a unit next to an empty city in the same turn. that sucked bigtime and I gave in to the demands hoping they would not attack. I managed to prevent total humiliation...but was forced to send vital Military support to these cities, and worse, change some buildqueues.
The good news is that America turned Polite after I made an embassy and is now sending his units further north through my lands towards China! A sneakattack is still possible but the Greeks themselves are commited to war now. In 10 turns we will revolt to republic and sieze what we can from the Americans, who have sent their armies in the old-fashioned AI-way north; one by one, the Chinese won't loose more then the city that is attacked first.
Beam. Beam has failed on Philo as I was first to get it. Also, he has deviated from the republic-path once for Literature. This in turn means he could also get the Great Library, which would suck, but if he does not I clearly hold some trumps. I estimate I can become a Republic some 20 turns sooner then him.[hmm]
The f11 alos gives me some good intel. Notice the Non-agri Greeks are first in Population!

All in all pretty decent, knowing the sandwich I am in! I am only worried about area a bit, but that should change soon enough[evil]

Turns 80-125

Some good things, some bad.

The fact that the only wonder built on my continent is the lighthouse is not a good thing at all. Beam has a plethora of Great Wonders to capture, with Spain being so very weak. To add to misery, the Byzantines on my lands will surely find the other continent (if they haven't already) using their Lighthoused Dromons.[saiyan]
The war between America and China finaly ended, and not too soon for China. No less then three major cities are now American meaning my northern border is also American now. Not good. There were still a lot of units (90% american) walking through my lands and some of my workers at one point were surrounded (totaly!!) by foreign unts. As soon as the war ended I therefor asked the Polite Americans to leave my turf, as they at that point had only 6 units within my borders. I expected them to go, but they did not, causeing them to declare war on me! I gambled and sort of lost as I had not too many units that time. Enough to survive though. :)
Techs and Buildings. I have Markets, Libs and rax everywhere. Eindhoven was building SunTzu, as a preb for Knigts Templar, but apparently the other continent is way ahead as Korea built it 6 turns before me. I now am in a bit of trouble as I do not expect to make SunTzu. I can switch to Sistine now, as I hold a theology monopoly (on my island), but that would be a rather useless wonder. I am racing to Copernicus as a "best of the rest" option.
On the war. Things are okay. I allied Byzantinea and China against America. It cost me my chivalry mono to the Byzies, but they lack horses. China went for 3 gold and Monarchy.
The area: I am fighting two fronts now and am aiming to capture the former Chinese cities in the north asap, to make sure Byzantine units are heading towards teh south.

Veldhoven builds a knight in 3, Valkenswaard a Hoplite in one.

The biggest worries are near the Bergeyk-region. It is attackable from 3 directions. Walls are there and luckily the first hoplite there promoted to elite, netting me a very sturdy defence.
This in turn also meant a GA! Strange thing is that Beam ery likely went into one as well, as I am still first in productivity but went second in MFG.
Future: I am praying for a decnt wonder in Eindhoven. I will accept any. I want to wipe Abe of the face of the planet, but priority lies with astronomy. I need to find the other continent.

To conclude this short update, the minimap.

If you conquer your continent quickly you should be fine.
What level is this?

From the (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2001) Map Making Thread, it's demi god. Not doing too bad KR. :)

Kingreno
13-11-2004, 10:09
@ Rik: Pessimism and Realism were at some point very close [crazyeye]. Beam led by score from the start, and his island simply preferred research and wonderbuilding over Military, unlike mine. That can happen and I will have to deal with it. Beam now has the Hanging Gardens and Artemis in Solid hands (it flips now and then but hey...).

@all. I now may have overestimeted Demi-god. I am cutting through America like a hot knife through butter. America is the biggest civ on the planet, and has all resources.

The war is going great. The Byzantines have captured Miami, and being the biggest city in "enemy" hands, Abe directs his forces at Miami...leaving the rest defended by only some pikes for Greek Knights. Oh, and Abe, sending lone Archers in my Territory will not help you:

Kingreno

Indeed erikk. [lol] "kei gaaf man, radio Bergeyk"

As turn 138 came the citizens of Eindhoven had a very though decision to make. Suntzu's was about to complete and in reality 1 out of three wonders could be built; SunTzu, Sistine and Copernicus. Sistime was a no go since there is not a single cathedral in Greece. Sun Tzu would give the limited advantage of free Rax, but I already have Rax in most towns, so it would mainly be to deny it to Beam (who gets enough for free). Also, it will come in rather handy in newly conquered American Towns.
Copernicus would give Eindhoven a great science boost. That is basicly it.
I picked Sun Tzu:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/2004111315565_SunTzu.jpg
42.33*KB

But for yet another very important reason. Since I know the other continent has Feudalism for quite some time now (korea built Knights Templar some time ago), they too must be building SunTzu. That would mean, upon construction of it in Eindhoven, they would switch to either Leo's, Sistine OR Copernicus. But the latter is only 400 shields, 200 less then the others. The fact that the turn after No other wonder was built is a very good thing indeed, as the AI is rather fond of Copernicus (there are reasons).
It all led me to believe (and hope) I have a solid Monopoly on astronomy. copernicus due in Veldhoven in 14 turns, Caravles exploring sea tiles!

Well. Nice. [sunn]

The southern lands are beginning to become Greek:

Great going, but are you sure that is the correct minimap? If so, bad luck with all those flips to the americans.. [sad]

Any info on Beam's mfg goods/gnp statistics?

Or is he so far ahead that it can't be said with certainty? doesn't seem to be since you are first in productivity... though as you say commercial trait/uncorrupted gnp might be a big factor in this. :)

Kingreno

hmm...this is the correct minimap, and I have had no flips yet!

Beam is on 240 MFG, something I can be as well, if I redistribute. I should overtake him when Philadelphia comes in my posession, it is big and close to Bergeyk, I hope the Americans built a Courthouse/market there.

Kingreno

Update.

America...is dead.

Beam and me met and agreed peace for 20 turns.
We raced to the end of the Medieval age and I can say I came out rather vitorious. But it is FAR from over.

Beam and me are almost the same size, I lead a bit here, he leads a bit there. However, I seem to be able to research all Medieval techs in 4 turns at 100%, he needs 5! 100% is btw easily obtained with Korea, Byzantines and Spain funding the Greek research!:D

The Mother of all great turns: number 167!

I am up ToG on everyone. Korea and Beam have Military Tradition.
I research Magnetism (everyone lacks that) this turn and get to the IA! My free tech: Nationalism [party]

I trade Magnetism and ToG to korea for MilTrad and 40gpt. They get Steam as Free tech. I trade Nat for Steam. I sell Mag and ToG to Byzantines for 10 gpt. They get Medicine as free tech. I trade Nationalism for Medicine with Byzies. AWESOME LUCK HERE. Beam, who is attacking Korea (and now faces riffles instead of Pikes[evil]) lacks all 3 IA techs and ToG. Since he also got Magnetism this turn he needs at least 4 turns for ToG or must trade for it! Muhahaha

In the same turn...

Eindhoven completes:

Also, in this turn, a load off Knights is upgraded in the north.

3 turns, no flips, one casualty (cav). China was the weakest demigod civ I have ever seen. It was not their lands, must have been the war with abe that lasted a long time.

This leads us to the following situation.

America and China are dead.
Arabia is on an island with one city
Korea is being attackied by Beam, and will be an island nation as well
Spain is a bit backwards, but I hope my gift of horses will give beam some trouble with them
Byzantines pay me a shitload of cash and are strong militarywise
Sumeria (beam) is backwards a bit, but not underestimated.
Greece is great![cool]

Beam is a tiny bit bigger then me in pop and area.
I outproduce him by 19 shields, but I am using a lot of growth for workerproduction now, in "full mode" I get up to 270 Mfg, a lot more then his 219. I am clueless as to why this is...

The plan, as can be seen, I am going for electricity now, followed by SciMeth. ToE due in Eindhoven, then Hoover in Son en Breugel (on the dommelriver ;))

I am holding up on attacking the byzantines. They are very useful in paying my science and their lands (except the annoying town of Miami) are not going to be productive.
As for beam, I may go on defence as I will get to inf sooner then he will. The north-south railroad is being constructed as we speak, so I fear no invasion...Spacerace perhaps?

Dude, well done. It seems to have become pretty much a standard in pbem games for you guys to extort the AI first, and then have two supercontinents go to war against eachother. At least if you dont count all the times someone is fucked by a mass MA.

3 turns for destroying a civ is a wellplanned war nomatter the condition of the civ I think [thumbsup]

As expected. easy prey for me! I chose AT and electronics and Hoover is due in 8. I was actually a bit scared I was going to miss TOE. I never expected to get all level 1 techs from tis age in one turn, so my prebuilds were not timed right, they were off for more then 6 turns! Luckily, I investigated 2 of Beams cities. One was building Smiths (and finished it...grrr), the other was on starvation circle, being very productive with 30 shields...palace due in 30! Pfew.
I now have AT, Elec and Rep parts over everyone, and SMeth to that on beam. My guess is he is going for Rep parts and the corp. Both are fine, as he needs to trade it arround for some cash, which will get it to me from either spain or Byzantium. I am now going for Sanitation. All major cities are building factories now, hospitals to follow and the full power of th commercial trait will be shown!

@Akots: I will not invade yet. Too risky. I intend to take out Byzantines the moment I hit the next age, make peace and get their free tech, then finish them off. That will (75% chance) get me two ModAge techs, and make the gap with Beam unbridgable. Nukes, diplo or Alpha Centauri to follow.

Massive update![thumbsup]

Where were we? Oh right! We had just completed the ToE in Eindhoven. Beam went after me (techwise) and went for AT himself in anill-attempt to take Hoover from me. However, Railroaded Son en Breughel had skyrocketed production resulting in:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/2004121711835_Hoover!.jpg
42.5KB

Factories were finished continentwide and immediately we profitted from our Sanitation research as Hospitals were next. I will never give this tech away as AI ignores is completely and I want beam to spend the full 4 turns on it. Beam went for (pricey!) Electronics after AT allowing me to go on the Coorperation which came in 5 turns. I was expecting Beam and the AI to get it too at some point but:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/20041217111157_sumerdiplo.jpg
70.38KB

Beam got AT one turn later and thus misses 4 techs! He is up Communism and Fascism on me but that is slightly unimportant. ;)

Things went predictably. Stock exchanges after hospitals and then mili. I used Civil Engineers extensively, mostly in the remote area's to build factories,Courthouses and Markets there. The Remotest (larger) cities are now on 10-15 shields. This is still an inf every 6-9 turns!
Theodora. That our love was not eternal was to be expected, but the Bitch RoP-raped me![saiyan] I had "locked" the border for this could have happened but she managed to kill 5 cav and almost take Philadelphia. She was going to pay![medic]
Soon Greek units overhwelmed riflemen from Byzantium all over the place.

I removed all foreign inhabitants off the island and it is completely Greek now! [dance]
Theodora still has one city surrounded by my cav on an island. I want her Mod-age tech, and plan on some leaderfishing.

Time went on. Spain got replacable parts and Beam has it too. He also gained Electronics and the Coorperation! He has signed an RoP with Spain and he intends to abuse Isabella soon now. The ratface!
My own research is progressing as well as I need that tech gap to stay there. I am up sanitation, Refining, Steel and combustion. Flight is up in 3! I can run 0.10.0 for a while to come and expect to be in the next age by no less then 11 turns (flight, mass prod and mot transp).
Beam knows I have steel and ref and thinks he is gaining (he is, a bit). He is about to meet a Destroyer. A destroyer of hope.

What is Beam up to?

Beam has been building a lot of military units. My production however, has also shifted to military units. Now the question is, what to do with the lead? And what are the options for my opponent? Let's start with the last question. Beam undoubtly knows I am gonna get to the next age soon, and will use my own and soon-dead Theodora's free tech, to make an even bigger tech-gap. This means his window of opportunity is not that big. If I have nukes, I will use them.
He therefore will have to either invade me or hope for the UN. The latter is a too big a gamble as both our reps are disastrous, also I am confident I can snatch the UN myself. The military option then.

Beam could land a stack of doom on some mountain. Sure. What would that get him? Nothing much really. I am building a HUGE number of Bombers and the "umbrella" is virtually worldwide. Not to mention (mech)inf is hard to defeat without Tanks.
That leaves but one option: marines and Cav. With RR all over the world he could capture one of my coastal cities and continue in and unload his Cav there. My empire would be severely hurt if not lost completely. Also, he is probably building cav now and "just" needs a few marines in say 20 turns. Off course we must counter this.

The Greeks see this as the only real threath to victory so we have called in to live opperation:

Farting Hellas

Farting Hellas (FH) will be a three-step-plan to world domination. First, to counter the mentioned tactic above we have ordered our workers to build a line of Barricades arround our core. No enemy unit can pass through Barricades unless they are in their OWN territory. That means that any cav will have to hold at these barricades. That in turn will allow our own groundforces (and more likely 40 bombers!) to kill them off. This is not 100% thight as Beam could bring settlers and settle next to a barricade. For this reason we will attempt to make a double barricade. The barricades will also be manned by Inf (mech inf).

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/2004121811229_defencelinesouth.jpg
145.04KB

Simmilar lines are made in the northern and Eastern area as well as around Eindhoven itself.
Step 2. If Beam wants to get to me he'll have to cross one ocean. Transports have 6 movement and that means at least 3 turns of vulnerability. Destroyers are establishing a perimeter arround the entire continetnt, if a fleet is spotted they will radio the air force. The airforce will relocate when needed and do some serious damage to Beams fleet. The problem as always is: to spot the fleet in time. This too is partly done by the Airforce. Royal greek fighters are searching the sea every turn now for enemy ships.

The bombing, as a dozen of theodora's Dromons found out, is lethal. Bombers almost always hit and do 3 hp damage maximum. There is realy no defence to it then Carriers with fighters but that will mean Beam has to research flight as well, a pricy deviation from the Marines techtree.
To illustrate the range of my monsters::D

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/Kingreno/20041218111031_224bombers.jpg
89.74KB

Similar sights can be seen in all area's. Soon every chunk of ocean that could have enemy ships will be instantly bombable (is that a word?) by 10-15 bombers on that turn, 30 more the turns after that. There is no realistic fleet that can survive that.
To end step 2, I will deploy submarines near weak spots in the defensive line to take out enemy transports if they do get through.

Step 3. Armageddon. For the sole possibility that Beam even has a chance of getting the evil idea of invading me I will nuke every city in Sumeria to ashes. 'nuff said.

WAR WITH SUMERIA
Greek fishermen insulted, our retaliation deadly

The western Ocean:

As greek fishermen were quietly fishing their day away a single sumerian Cruiser approached. The sailors on deck shouted all kinds of different stuff, most of which not for childrens ears. As a retaliation the Fishermen radiood the nearest airbase. There, a squadron of brandnew Lancaster-Bombers took off. A written declaration of war was deliverd in Urk as the bombers engaged the enemy Cruiser. Bomns fell and they fell hard. Having never ever seen an airplane before the men guarding the defensive guns had no chance.
The damaged cruiser set off its engines in a desperate attempt to sail only to find herself surrounded by no less then three Greek destroyers. After bombardment the last destroyer shelled the Cruisers ammo-depot. 1567 men and women of the Sumerian navy died. No greek casualties repoted.
News set across teh world and in the same year 4 more sumerian ships were reuthlessly destroyed without casualties. Transports are being boarded and ships set for the enemy. The airforce is at full alert and at home, full time warmobilization is taking place increasing our MFG lead over sumeria by no less then 80%!
Having noted that everyone else on this world is evil, the magnimous leader KR has called for other worlds to hear the just Greek cause:

Step 2 of the plan is almost complete. My island is almost one giant barricade and I cannot see Beam capturing even one core city in the same turn he invades:
the south as an example:

Further, my inland cities are mostly on "wealth" now to boost research possibilities. My army is simply too big to require any more units:

the coastal cities are all on nuclear Submarine construction, I have mobilized so it's going quite fast. [evil]

Techs:

Beam is in the IA and lacks flight and Sanitation there. He may have Amphibious war. As can be seen Space flight and thus Tactical Nukes are in 6 turns now. That coincides wuth:

Most cities will go for Nuke prebuilds soon, I expect to finish a dozen or so in 7 turns. Nuclear subs are ready to deliver them to beam, one or two turns later. Depending on the targets. Isn't that nice for a christmas spirit?

NUKES HIT SUMERIA

***Manhattan project proves it's value ***
***World shocked***
***many sumerian casualties***

Today, Greek Submarines succesfully deployed nuclear weapons. The newest misiles were launched from beneath the sea's. Evil sumerian bases were the targets as TN1 and TN2 hit their prime targets. Initial reports say the damage is huge, but acceptable!

With only two nukes (out of 40 in production) finished, the Greek high command had to decide where to strike Sumeria. We were able to find two clusters of luxuries that were found only on those clusters. Removing 2 luxes from beams inventory in one turn, will surely harm him greatly. And so it happened:

As said, almost everyone is on nukeduty now. In 6 turns, we will also be able to build ICBM's. Beam may surrender before that but if he insists...I will go on with this. His core will be trageted next, and naturaly his uraniumresources. we'll see.

Great game and a great spoiler KR! [goodjob] The decisive moment indeed was the end of the MA where we met as I was also planning to conquer Korea. MT was needed for that and KR skilfully went into the IA getting the 3 baseline techs in a single turn.

We already agreed on a rematch. :)

Thnx again to Kemal for this challenging map.

yes Kemal! The map was very well balanced and very fun to play. The single thing I'd done different was giving the Chinese and Arabs Iron as well! It would have made things a lot thougher but now, especially the Chinese were canonfodder for the americans. Thumbs up!

Beam, I will open a pregame discussion thread in the Mapmaking forum. For KrvsB # 2![charge]
