In this thread I would like to share my thoughts, plans and ideas with you and hopefully recieve a lot of help, because I will need it :)

We are playing a diety game with 8 players and no AI on an archipelago map.
I've never played a game like this before and I have no clue how it will evolve in the long run.

I'm playing Portugal, but it has been altered "a bit". Portugal is, besides Seafearing, Industrious instead of Expansionistic. A great improvement.

Aggie cooked the map, and this is my starting spot.

Nice! On a river, coastal, lux, lots of bonus grass, tabacco, forrest to chop, hut.. The only thing lacking is a food bonus, but you can't have it all.. right?
I am located in the far north, a bit left of center.

Short term plans:
1. Build 2 curragh for fast scouting
2. Build a warrior for MP or land scouting
3. Build a granary
4. Build a settler
This requires the knowlegde of pottery. There are 3 ways to get it: research, trade (I have masonry).. or that hut!

Well.. that hut gave me gold, and I don't know how long it will take to meet someone who is willing to trade me pottery, so reseach it will be.

Plans sounds good, although I'd prolly build one curragh and two warriors (curragh don't pop nothing), but that's just my preference. I would definitely speed that granary/settler by chopping forest after mining two (maybe three BG's).

Did you choose CB before settling/popping that hut? Then, if you would have gotten a tech, it would have been Pottery 100% sure. Will you be trying to get Philo first or are you going for Pottery?

Good luck with the game :)

We have played 10 turn so far.
It is not going very fast, but what can you expect from an 8 player game..

This is the current situation:
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2004823201325_Portugal turn 10 a.jpg

As you can see Casa Banzai will grow next turn, and in the turn after it will produce my second curragh.
Also the worker will finish a mine by then, putting the city at 5 shields per turn. This allows me to build a warrior in 2.

It will also take me 6 turns from now to finish the research on pottery, but this will probably drop a turn when the city grows.
I expect to be able to start the granary right after the warrior is build. Nice timing right?

Next is the scouting.
This is the current view of my curragh:

Should I scout northwest to see more of my island?
Should I scout southwest or southeast to find the others?
Any tips?

About city locations..
North of the hut looks like a nice spot.. a cow, 2 fish, auto-pop that hut without the chance of barbarians.
We'll see it when we get there!

Thank you Plux!
It is too late to switch to warrior, so I stick with my plan to build a second curragh :)
I will definately chop a forrest to get the granary faster. I've planned to chop the forrest south of Casa Banzai(with Dyes) and connect the lux. This tile is not on the river.
If I would chop the other forrest with Dyes the trade bonus from the road would be lost to the despotism pennalty (Dyes = 1, river = 1).

I can not remember if I selected CB before I settled, but I believe I did. No luck though.
I will not participate in the Phylo gambit as the agricultural civs will grow faster and therefor have more trade revenue.
Also Anares with the Dutch is player 2 and has 'first strike' (I am player 4).
In addition someone must have silks or gems, which produces a lot more trade.

[mischief] I have an idea... [mischief]

But seriously...I would use one curragh to explore the world and another to explore the home island. That's my common tactic as seafaring civ.

Just remember that the hut could definitely spawn barbs now that you have build military units (curraghs).

@Plux. If you settle next to a hut it will never pop barbarians!

We have played another turn!
The cultural borders of Casa Banzai expanded, showing some coastal lines at the west.
This makes it less important to scout my island.
I will use my curragh to scout southwest and the curragh I will build next turn to scout southeast.

Look what the cat dragged in:

This is getting interesting. We will probably meet next turn..
Hopefully we can make some nice trade agreements!

Stay tuned..

Turn 13 - Beam and I finally made contact!

It seems he got a conscript warrior from a hut.
Well.. that saves him some lux tax.

We could not exchange our starting techs as it will take me only one turn to research pottery.
During a chat he told me he was researching Writing, so I proposed a trade:
Writing for Masonry + The Wheel.
As everybody has Alphabet Masonry and The Wheel are the most expensive baseline techs he needs to research.
Also The Wheel gives him access to Horses and his UU: the 3 men charriot.
Unfortunately he did not accept this deal.. he wants another baseline tech.
I think that is too expensive. Negotiations on this subject will continue however.

One thing we did agree, and that was scouting.
He will be scouting with his curragh to the west and southwest, while I will scout south - towards the center of the map.
I he makes contact with another civ with his curragh, he will tell me and if I make contact with my curragh down south I will tell him.
Too bad we are not allowed to share maps yet.
I have not told him about my second curragh, so if I find someone in the east with that curragh.. I will not tell him!:D

Talking about my eastern curragh.. it has spotted another island:

Looks like a nice island to settle, unless it is already inhabited..

Made contact with Kemal in turn 14!
I offered him Masonry.. maybe he has something I do not have.
I proposed to work together in tech research.
Perhaps we can trade Writing for The Wheel + Masonry in the future.

I've also spotted some wines on a jungle island between Kemal and me. It will be a race to capture that!

I've also something nice to show..

Things are progressing nicely!

In turn 17 I stumbled on a curragh from Anarres in the center of the map.
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2004930204827_Portugal turn 17 anarres curragh.jpg

Unfortunately there were no trading possibilities.

To honor my agreement with Beam I told him about Anarres, and in return he told me he located Krys south of his island.
Beam said he was working on a trade with Krys. He would provide Krys with Pottery and recieve Warrior Code and Bronze Working in return.
That would be a damn good trade!
If he would succeed we would make the following deal:
My Masonry for his Warrior Code + Bronze Working
followed by The Wheel for his Writing
followed by Mapmaking for his Literature.

Unfortunately Beam was not able to make the trade with Krys.
We have to work out another agreement.

In the mean time I was scouting the island of Kemal, and got a nice view of his territory and the surroundings in turn 19.
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2004930205756_Portugal turn 19 Kemal stad.jpg

Two cities already! This proves once again the power of the agricultural trait.

In turn 21 I met Krys myself.
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/200493021215_Portugal turn 21 Krys.jpg

His city dropped to size 1, and so did Beams. This means they decided to build a settler before a granary. I don't know if that is a smart move, but the future will tell.

Krys and I started some difficult negotiations, but ended with the following trade:
My Masonry for his Warrior Code + Bronze Working followed by me paying him Ceremonial Burial once I get it.
Later Krys said he was afraid not to get CB from me at all or have to wait till eternity for it.
Too bad he does not trust me :(, but I had no interest in changing this deal. Therefore we agreed on an insurance clause:
I will pay him 10 gold now and recieve it back once he gets CB from me. If he gets CB from another source he can keep the 10 gold.

To finalize this report hereby an overview of my territory.

The forrest on the west-coast next to the cow looks like a nice spot for my second city. It is the same spot as Kemals second city, so it has to be perfect :D

I've changed my mind :)
I am not going to settle on top of the forest, but south of it.
It will still be on the river, coastal and next to the cow, but it will have 2 forests to chop instead of none!
This way I will be able to build a granary faster.
In addition I will be able to irrigate and build a road on the cow and a road on the city site... allowing me to build the city the turn after I build the settler... saves me one turn.
I'll need this turn as.. well.. I suck!

Anarres is west from Eldakkar (I spotted his borders), but we have already met.
Only Arghis to find.. and I have a pretty good idea where he is hiding.

46 turns have been played already!

In turn 32 Arghis was met.
By then I had already researched The Wheel, but no SGL [V].
Arghis claimed he was researching it though...
More important was the chatting with Beam and Eldakkar.
We agreed to form a research alliance!
After recieving Writing Beam started researching Code of Laws, Eldakkar Mapmaking and I Mathematics.
We would try to trade for Philosphy.

Anarres was so nice to tell me he would get Iron Working pretty soon, so I proposed a trade: Math + Wheel for Iron + Philo. This would benefit us greatly!.
We are still negotiating.

At home things are going nicely too, although my advisor says there is a barb camp near Costa Nova. Probably near the wheat in the southwest.

My eastern curragh "Physalia Physalis" is heading back to Kemal via Akots and will continue mapping the centre of the map.
My western curragh "Physalis Utriculis" will map Beams island and sails back home to map the land behind my island.

The discovery of Philosophy is not far away. I wonder who will win it (Kemal or Anarres) and which free tech will be picked.

This game is crawling compared to the Fab Four!
52 turns have been played and it seems Kemal won the Philo race and picked Mapmaking.
Anarres has Philo and Mapmaking too, so I think they have an agreement.

I have 3 turns of research left on Mathematics and made a deal with Kemal:
Math + Wheel for Mapmaking and Philo.
Amazing!
He really wanted to sign a peace treaty for 20 turns and I accepted if he would send me the techs immediately, which he did :D
So I have 20 turns to prepare my invasion force!

Negotiations with anarres are not improving very much.
I offered him Math in exchange for Iron Working, which is a good deal for him unless he made that agreement with Kemal.
We'll see soon enough!

Now I know why Kemal wanted that peace treaty so much:

He landed on a spot so that Akots can not attack him, but he can attack Akots.
Who knows what will happen next!

Nice spoiler man.

So, are you able to stab Kemal @ the end of the 20 turns?

Banzai
11-01-2005, 09:48
I hope so! I have barracks in Casa Banzai and will connect horses soon to build charriots.
Eldakkar will start researching horseback riding (for his MW) and once he has it I will get it and upgrade.
After math I will stop research for a while to get the cash needed for the upgrade.
I've also some galleys to build / curragh to upgrade.
There is not much time though... we'll see how far I can get.

Man.. this spoiler is outdated!
Time for some news :)

The trade deal with Anarres (Math for Iron) has been rejected by Anarres. He had other priorities [crazyeye].
Two turns later he recieved Math from Kemal.[aargh]

[rant]
[guns][mgun][ninja]

They will both pay [slap]

A bit of bad luck delayed my attack on Kemal.
"a bit" is probably the wrong line here.. I should say "a lot".
First I lost a curragh to a barbarian galley. A disaster as I would not be able to land enough units on Kemal's land.
Next: Kemal launched his golden age when fighting Akots.
He has been average to strong compared to me all the time, including now.
I hope that will change soon.
I have been settling my island and other islands in the mean time and can now focus on more millitary.
Casa Banzai is building Charriots every other turn now :)

This is my land now:

There are two barbarian galleys at Demasiada Grama. I am luring them to Kemal with my galley at Vila des Vacas do Rio :D

Ilha dos Burros will whip the harbour in 3 turns and Montanha de Vinho will do the same in 11 turns.
This will connect 2 incense and 1 wines to my empire.
I am already trading one of my dyes with Beam for spices.

Research is ok. 10 turns to go on Currency.
I will recieve Ceremonial Burial and Iron Working from Beam soon in exchange for Mathematics.
Beam will also send Mysticism soon, so I can start on Polytheism after Currency.
Beam will research Construction after Iron.
Eldakkar already has Horseback riding and is now researching The Republic. He will go after Literature next or trade for it with Krys.
I can get HBR from Eldakkar anytime I want to, but I want to build more charriots to upgrade first.

All starting islands are the same.
It will raise suspision if I start to explore his island with a galley.
Kemal is very cautious. His alarmbells will ring when he thinks he smells a galley.. even before he sees one!

This game is moving rather slowly.
Too bad, because it is a fun game.

I have recieved Horsebackriding from Eldakkar and upgraded my charriots.
I am still weak compared to Eldakkar and Kemal :(
The advantage of the agricultural civs is huge in this game.
Kemal contacted me to renegotiate the peace treaty and I had no choice than to extend it to turn 100.

The "Lure the barbarians to Kemal" project seems to have been succesfull :D
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2005829202145_swp_lurethegalley.JPG
There is only one of the two barbarian galleys left, and it is redlined. This means it was victorious!
I hope it sinked a galley from Kemal with two settlers on board!

In the mean time I scouted some of the islands in my backyard and discovered Iron and Ivory.
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2005829202529_swp_settleplans.JPG
Both are high priority!
I think the Ivory is more important than the Iron as during the meeting at Killer I heard that Kemal did not had an Ivory island.
Maybe the barbarian project was even more successfull than I could have hoped :)

Research is going well.
I am one turn away from researching Currency.
Beam will send me Mysticsm next turn so I can start on Poly right away.
Eldakker will send Republic in a turn or 2, but before I revolt I have to whip the harbor in Montanha do Vinho.
Prebuilds for Markets are being constructed in my 2 biggest cities.. aided by forrest chops.
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/banzai/2005829203026_swp_banzailand.JPG
That will provide a nice income boost for the Portuguese republic :)

I hope this game will continue soon.
