Killer and I have started a pbem...

we decided to choose eachothers civs [}:)]

me - the mighty warrior mongols
killer - the patheticly laughable koreans

standard size map
all else random (except barbs > none)

anarres made the map... his comment: "you guys will hate this map but i think it's great" [:O]

we had a good pre-match chat (shit i wish i had ripped it, mebe killers got it logged...)

we have played to turn 58.

It looks like I am on a weird island-and-landbridges shaped continent with the Greeks and Russians close-by. Here's my fledgling empire:

the known world circa 1600bc

Both Alexander and especially Katherine are seeing fit to extort money from me. I'm giving in for now, but there will be payback.

The russians have pissed me off by beating me to a nice spot west of my capitol with a settler, then when I moved away and settled elsewhere they moved north to found minsk. bastarrrds.
The greeks joined in the gang up on the human fun by blocking my scouts moving across the landbridges (bah! what use scouts on this weird map.) and then tripped some barbs and killed my scout [mad3] Thankfully Killer reports having barb horsie hordes on his hands (hurrah!)

Fecking Greeks

Hmm, I have a nice space to expand further into SE but apart from one good 2 cow spot there ain't much in the way of resources. North are 2
furs, unfortunately they are tundra-bound. Still, next settler goes there I think.

Russia and Greece are both ahead in techs, I have all first rank science except masonry and alphabet (which I am still a few turns away from on min sci :(). I managed to get a couple of techs from huts but I expect to squeeze a few from russia/greece in the not too distant future.

Russia will be first cos they're close and have incense, and they keep extorting me, but I want some infrastrucure (and HR/IW) first.

Greece has warped a settler across my land!! (either that or I have gone blind...) Both Katherine and Alexander seem intent on settling land that has Mongol written all over it.

I play block the AI (ha! that'll teach you to block me Alexander!) with a couple of archers while I try and get a settler or two of mine to the prime spots.

turn 70 - Hmmm, my military is apparently bigger than Katherines now. Good. I am a couple of turns from HR which Alexander lacks, hopefully I can do some trade with him.

Now there's plenty of land but where to settle? decisions decisions...

074 - research HR, trade HR + 3 gpt+5 gold for IW with greece. connect horses same turn (mmm, timing!)

077 - found Hovd

079 - found Ulaanbaater

080 - I do a 18gpt deal with greece for writing + masonry, then tell him to get the hell of my land... surprisingly he declares war [devil] free techs and a happy bonus, now all I gotta do is fend off his swords and hoplites [eek]
I immediatly kill two hoplite/settler combos (with horses, no losses... man the rng loves me sometimes!) in my territory and get 4 slaves. Set research for Code of laws on min sci.

080 to 088 - Alexander likes to send his swords 1 at a time without hoplites, silly man. I kill 3 lone swords.

089 - small 2/3-unit stacks of greek swords start appearing on my border, Alexander wants 60gold for peace (I have saved 180gold already from non-payment of techs). I refuse for the moment... if he puts a stack on grass or plains I shall hit it with my 8 horsies (and reduce the peace price), if he manouveres them via hills to my cities I'll cough up.
I stick a slave working in sight of some swords to try and entice them off a hill :D

Build an embassy with russia.

090 - Alex manouvers a hoplite inside my borders and looks like he's starting to gather his swords up into a stack, he then offers peace, but still wants 60 gold. I decline and decide to launch 'operation Peace 4 Cheap' with my 9 horses:

I Kill 5 swords + 1 hoplite for a loss of 1 horse (get 2 elites as well) and get peace + 60 gold from Alexander [lol]

I Buy Code of Laws for 21 gpt + 160gold from russia, then demand she remove her troops (a spear/settler) from crossing my land... what do you know, she declares war and cancels the gpt. Silly cow. I lose a horse trying to take the spear/settler but get it with an archer. 2 more slaves join the chain-gang.
Trade Code Of laws + 13gpt with Alex for MapMaking. Set research for Philosophy on min sci.

Looking good Dr. A ! You can never have enough slaves - and those horses will make a nice Keshik force later (Keshiks suck, but they look cool and you can probably take out the Russians with them).

I wish Keshik's had 'treat hills as grassland' as well as mountains, in fact I am convinced that's how they were designed! it makes little sense they way they are now...

We've played another ten turns or so.

091 - Catherine moves a not so scary archer onto my border. I ignore.

092 - Alex demands I move my troops out of his borders so I do the same, he says "We'll be back", I smirk.

I take Minsk for a loss of 1 horse (it had 2 spears and an archer.) and kill the lone archer in the South.

093 - Alex has moved a sword further into my territory so I ask him to retreat, inevitably he declares war. hehe, that's 13gpt saved then. I move my research upto 70% (now i have the income to matter) I'll get philosophy in 9 turns :D

I kill Alex's sword and attack a hoplite/warrior combo that's been hovering on my NE border for ages, I lose another horse but get a promotion to elite as well. I'm down to 7 horses again now (built a few, lost a few), I don't reckon russia or greece has much left to throw at me right now though.

094 - Found Dalandzadgad next to Yakutsk, Yakutsk will be auto-razed very shortly [fdevil]

095 - Attack yakutsk with a couple of archers (the horses are healing in the North of my empire) both die to what looks like a single spear [cry] There's a barb horsie hanging around trying to attack Yakutsk too, everytime it heals it pops up next turn with just 1 hp.

096 - Lose a horse killing a hoplite moving in on a worker of mine.

097 - Catherine trys to sneak a settler protected by a warrior [crazyeye] past my border. 2 more slaves :) I then raze Yakutsk (losing a horse.) She agrees to give me 70gold, mysticism and philosophy (I am 5 turns from anyway) for peace :D

I set research to Republik on min-sci (on max-sci it costs me 28gpt income and gives in 37 turns)

098 - A stack of 5 greek swords appears on my border, ideally I'd like to wait for it to get one tile closer before attacking so my horses never leave my territory, but Alex can move a hoplite onto the stack next turn so I attack. I kill 3 and injure two but lose 3 horses [cry] I'm down to 6 horses now. I kill the barb horsie that's hanging about in the south too.

099 - The greek swords have retreated but 2 hoplites are still around. [EDIT: on examining the screenshot I realise my spear protecting my injured horses has been promoted, so the swords must have attacked not retreated!] Oh well, they can't do much in the way of attacking so I'm going to wait for them to get onto flatlands (or throw themselves against my spear defended cities/workers)

Throughout these ten turns Killer tells me he is getting serious grief from Egypt :D Apparently their settler escorts number more than his entire army, and he has no other contacts [:O]

I tell him I am ripping ahead playing the AI off against itself [lol]
"I want just ONE more neighbour for Cleo to attack!" Oh boy, sounds like he is isolated. I'm gonna build a galley and go discover the world I reckon ;)

Killer and I played another little ten turn power-session, I must have been playing someone else too because I neglected to make turn by turn notes! heres the sumary anyhows:

I bought polyethism and a better world map from the russians for 22gpt, then got catherine to declare war again :) Grab a settler for slaves and generally kick her ass.

Get a few more promotions too killing Alex's swords, then get a peace deal in which I get maths for 3gpt.

Then at turn 109 I finally get a Great Leader from an elite archer! (named Robin Hood of course! ;)) Send him NE to build a FP.

110 - rush FP in (NW), build my first galley and sail it East to scour the edge of the continent I can see there.

111 - my galley is down 1 hp, so has survived a barb attack. A fortunate thing indeed for when I move it 2 tiles NE it spies a viking archer who I contact... Boof! I initiate a massive trading round which nets me all contacts (bar Korea, which I leave for 1 round to see if I can coerce killer to split the cost), Literature, Construction, approx. 500 gold and the world map :D The only available tech I dont have is currency but the turks have a monopoly on it for the moment and I'll wait for the price to drop. (Also my new maps reveal a barb camp dangerously close to a worker/spear prepping a new city site and I'm cautious of triggering a new era barb uprising...)

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/DrAlimentado/2003521201638_KillerMiniMap_112.jpg

Killer has many more cities than me. I'm a little more boxed in than he is but it highlights the fact that I'm still a builder really, hmmm, lessons to learn - must spew out settlers more quickly!

I stack 7 horses on the russian border near smolnsk. Ideally it'll grow to 2 next turn... but probably not, so it'll probably auto-raze. Moscow now has the Great Lighthouse too, a nice bonus but I'm dammed jealous of Killer having the Pyramids and the GL waiting for him in Thebes. Bastarrrrd.

112 - Take Smolnsk and auto-raze it, no losses but a few injured, once they heal I can advance on Moscow. The Turks have Republik, I want it bad but I'll wait for them to trade it round a bit first.

DrAlimentado

113 - Buy Republik from Rome, declare anarchy. 6 turns to go... Move a stack of 11 horses plus a spear and archer into russian territory for the assault on Moscow. I have a settler following close behind to found a city on the border.

114 - Move my stack of horsies next to Moscow, if they fail I have a few reinforcements on the way too. i also wipe out the barb camp on my northern border, now it's safe to get currency and trigger the new era.

115 - assault on moscow time, my 11 horsie stack fails to kill 3 spear and a sword, I kill 2 of the defenders but one promotes and one is left injured. :( I lose 4 horses in total, 2 of them elite [cry] dam, the remaining horses are all injured bar one which has promoted to elite.

116 - my stack has been thoroughly counterattacked... 2 elites are redlined and retreated, 1 missing presumed dead, I have 3 more fresh horses and an elite archer I advance to hopefully take moscow next turn. I found Baruun-Urt on the russian border and retreat the injured stack inside its border to heal.

117 - 1 horse is dead from my mini-stack, but 2 russian swords appear to have advanced out of moscow to to threaten a slave worker I left on the road to moscow, bonanza, my 2 horses and elite archer attack moscow, I kill the 2 spears left there and take it!! *phew* a result, if that hadn't worked it would have been a few turns before I could attack again. Over the last few turns Catherine has pop-rushed it from being size 5 to size 1, how helpful of her. I now have the Lighthouse, and another lux from moscow, and just 1 turn of anarchy left. I move my injured stack into moscow to fend off a possible counterattack.

120 - I kill off a loose russkie sword and lose a horse for my troubles. Examining the remains of my forces I have just 9 horses left, 7 of them are elites though! I don't make peace with the russkies yet as I want to take Odessa and Kiev before I trap the rest of the russkies in the southern penninsula. Greece is moving a settler across my heartlands no doubt to the small gap left in the middle. Shame he hasn't got any techs I want, no doubt he will declare war if I push him but I'll wait till he's got there and borrow all his cash first :D I start moving the few warriors that were garrisoning cities to the Greek border where they can upgrade to swords in anticiaption. Once I've dealt with the russians I can start planning an offensive on the Greek Core...

121 - 3 Barb warriors appear in the south, arse, I haven't got much protection down that way but move a couple of spears to try and hold them off until a horsie or two can get there. I buy a map (my WM+2gold) from the turks (who seem to have galleys down there) and it reveals a new barb camp real close to my southern border. Feck, next civ to get currency (turks have it) will probably trigger a barb uprising.

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/DrAlimentado/2003521202010_KillerMiniMap_121.jpg

122 - Kiev falls to 3 elite horsies and I get my second Leader :D But what to do with him?? There are no wonders on offer, but I also have no actual troops to put into an army right now, besides who wants a horsie army anyway?? hmmm. I'm 10 turns from currency then into the MA, shall I wait for SunTzu/Leonardos?...

123 - hehe, last turn when I offered peace to catherine in exchange for Odessa she wouldn't go for it... Now she's pop rushed something there and guess what... now it's worth less she'll give odessa for peace! [lol] I take the peace offer, russia is confined to the southern penninsula now. I move some horses to go wipe out the barb camp in the south then I can start building up to take on the greeks.

124 - Barb uprising... my horsie was next to the barb camp ready to disperse it and a horde of barb horses appear! arrgh. bloody greeks have bought currency from the ottomans. I get currency for 30gold + incense from the greeks. And I can now see that both the turks and greeks have fuedalism and engineering... how did the greeks afford it?? they only had 160 gold or so last turn!?! Once I have dealt with the barb horde I'm going to go do some pointy stick diplomacy with Alexander.

125 - rush all available troops to the south in anticipation of barb hordes attacking my southern cities. Arse and Feck!!!

126 - a stack of 8 barb horses is next to my border. I attack and kill them all for no losses (and promote some vet horses I've just built.) However, as I kill the last one and advance onto the tile it reveals another stack of 8... oh shit.
