Killing my opponents ? There are many other games that do the job a lot faster.
Winning the game whatever the way ? No, I'm a RBCiv-like player, and so want to win with every player (human or AI) having roughly the same chance. I don't like to cheat.
So I answered : building a civilization. My aim since my 1st game back in Christmas 1993 with Civ1. I hope that Civ4 gets closer than ever to that notion of building a civilization.

None of the above. But if I have to choose then it is to win, whatever way. But I interpret that as learning the game, understanding the basic concepts and mastering difficult challenging (Sid level, getting out of a tech hole, certain restrictions).

A friend hooked me on that soft drug called "Civ" more than 10 years ago. I had to increase the dosis to feed my addiction eversince. Eventually, I switched to harder stuff (Civ2, Moo2...).
Once I could have been cured. But some nasty dealer SMACed me in the face which drove me away from that 'CTP' therapy.
Now I'm on Civ3.

for me it's essentially building, having a good time and seeing / enjoying the various situations that the game mechanics can produce.

If I want to win, I play chess. If I want to build a civilization, I play with the AI. Dunno really. Seems both but there is something else. Looks like this else is just pure amusement of the game playing process regardless of the result. May be I just like the worker animations...

Not playing anymore, trying to get rid of the addiction, but when I played it was for building a civilization, or team up and beat the shit out of our opponents.
