I really plan to install 1.22 soon but also be able to run 1.15. Have ppl already made a dual 1.15 / 1.22? And what is the type of dual install that gives the most user-friendly process in terms of switching between versions?

I need to install 1.22 soon because I can't complete aggie vs sky now :(

OK its as easy as 1-2-3 :
- select your "Conquest" folder in your CivilizationIII folder.
- right-click on it and COPY it
- Paste it on your desktop or anywhere else except the original folder.
- Name it "Conquest1.15"
- Once renamed, move it back into your "Civilization III" folder.
- Download the 1.22 patch and upgrade your Conquest the normal way.
Now you have both versions.
In order to switch from one to another :
- Select your "Conquest" file
- Rename it to "Conquest1.22"
- Select "Conquest1.15"
- Rename it "Conquest"
And vice versa ;)

All save files and shortcuts will always point to the right folder thats the beauty of this trick...

The only issue with this is that once you have played one version you cant rename and play another one immediately : you have to first
restart the computer and them rename...
If anybody has a solution for that last issue, I'd love to know btw.

Good luck :D

You should also MOVE the "saves" folder in the conquests dir first to somewhere else! Move it back to the 1.15 version after, since the saves dir can be MASSIVE, and there is no need to copy it at all. Make sure to create a new "saves" dir in the 1.22 branch, and also an "Auto" dir if you want auatosaves to appear.

When you upgrade games move from the 1.15 saves dir to the new saves dir in the 1.22 install...

And to "fix" the shortcuts, just create one to each version of the Conquests.exe. No need to reboot, am not sure why you would need to, even as Sky suggests... [???]

A final note: If your desktop is on a differnt drive to your install you REALLY don't want to have to copy it there and back! Just select the "CivIII" folder in the left hand side of explorer, then do copy on "conquests" dir in the right hand side and "paste". It will automatically be called "copy of conquests", which you can then just rename to "conquests115". :)

No one should afraid of making a duel install, the only issue some ppl could have is that it requires an additional 549 MB of space on the HD.

I combined Skies and anars methods:
1 - Clean up the Sav dir, if you are like me and don't clean up savs often that is a lot of MB.
2 - Just make sure a Saves dir and a Saves\Auto dir stay in place.
3 - Select Civ3PTW leftside in Windows Explorer, right click Conquests in the righthand pane, copy and immed. paste. Copy of Conquests is created. Rename it to something like Conquests115.
4 - Apply the patch. The installation will ask to replace some files, JFDI.

Now for the hardest part: ;)
5 - Find the entry in your Programs Menu called "Play Conquests!"
6 - Right click and select Create Shortcut. An entry like "Play Conquests! (2)" will be created in the same menu.
7 - Right click the new shortcut and select Rename and rename it to something that is a clear reminder this shortcut will start 1.15.
8 - Rightclick the renamed shortcut. Select Properties.
9 - Under the Shortcut tab there is an entry Target and an entry Start in. Both point to a dir called Conquests.
10 - Rename the Conquests dir in both entries to the exact name choosen in step 3. In this case Conquests115. Don't rename the Civ3Conquests.exe!
11 - Click OK, that's all!

No dir renaming anymore, just use shortcuts to start the version you want.

Some findings:
- Can't run 1.15 and 1.22 simultaneously :(
- But can run / exit between versions without rebooting :)
- Could not load 1.15 savs in 1.22 :(
- Could load the biq for Aggie vs Sky :)
- I am fucking tired and have to go [sleep] soon and Aggie vs Sky is delayed 'til Tue :(

Beam, I use this method and you CAN play one after the other without rebooting!!! One thing - when you quit one version you need to wait 10 secs or so for the conquests.exe to properly quit, otherswise when you start the other version it still thinks the old one is running and won't load.

Also - any PBEM you have with a modified map (all CDZ PBEMS) should upgrade fine! SP games will have issues, but modified maps should work...

I was just being friendly to Sky ;).

I am perhaps not clear in my wording: I could switch many times between 1.15 and 1.22 without an issue and/or rebooting. I could not have 1.15 and 1.22 open at the same time however. A no-brainer imo.

The issue with the savs confuse me, I tried 3 PBEM savs and all gave the DATE error.

I can confirm that dual install works without rebooting (on my machine).

A less space expensive way is to

zip all files in the Conquests root dir plus the text folder into a zip file called conquests1_15.zip

run the patch

zip all files in the Conquests root dir plus the text folder into a zip file called conquests1_22.zip

when ever you want to run either one....just right click on the zip file and select "extract here"

and select yes to overwrite existing files.

Thats it....only drawback is that is not shortcutable.

Also mega-games has a de-ordorant for 1.22 English version ;)

I'm using the method digger described as well.

I'd recommend to lauch each version of C3C once (and eventually set your preferred prefs then) before zipping (or just backing up) the files in .../Conquests and in .../Conquests/Text. This way, you'd get your individual .ini file into .../Conquests and the .ini would be backed up with the settings you want.
