I started a deity game vs anarres. I'm Greece and he's Germany. In our open thread you can see that our start is quite the same.

I decided to move my worker to the BG tile in the east. Mainly because the west is so full of mountains. It reveals cattle, so I move my settler SE:

At turn 17 move first warrior meets the Romans and the Koreans. They are a couple of techs in front, but luckily they miss Writing. I started min science on Writing when I settled Athens.

At turn 52 I got Writing, only to find out that the Romans did it one turn before me :( But at least Korea gives me two techs for it (warrior code, the wheel iirc). This allows me to see where to horsies are. Well, there is one horse south of me, close to Rome. So my next settler will start the race for it.

At turn 53 anarres shocks me: his warrior stands on the border of my empire [eek] He lacks writing and the wheel, but has iron working. I will NOT trade with him yet. Philosophy is in 10 and I believe that I have a good shot at it. I won't let him profit of that! Luckily I can get a second warrior to my southern city quickly, so his warrior can't simply cause destruction. I won't send a hoplite ;)

anarres told me that he has had disease twice already. I guess I have had more luck until now.

Any indication of where he is? built an embassy yet?

Also, your lands are not very productive, what are the plans?

I first want to finish the landgrab (of course the horse first if possible), but then I will try to build up horses quickly to take out a few Roman towns. Biggest goal now is to meet more civs and get Philo first. Anarres just gave me a wake up call with this quick contact. I might even build up an horses army and go after anarres, profiting from an early GA. We'll see.

No embassy yet. I need the money for the Philo run.

Hmmm, I lost a detailed write up [hmm]. But I can say that the Philo run failed :( I still only know 3 civs (Korea, Rome and anarres) and there Philo is unknown. So I still am able to buy Masonry, Iron Working, Warrior Code for it.

I now am doing a min science run on Literature. Amazingly anarres doesn't know Writing yet (he also doesn't know the Wheel, Masonry, Ceremonial Burial). I'm wondering how he wants to get back into this tech race. War? With swords???

At turn 67 my empire looks like this:

anar has amazed me in our PBEM as well with his techpath. He found a loophole and was able to catch up. Good luck!

Turn 79: I establish an embassy in Berlin (anarres). To my surprise he is est of me, not west...

Turn 81: Very interesting. My two neighbours that I know of -Rome and Korea- kill each other. They have bost lost a city already.

Turn 87: I finally meet another tribe. The Maya! Only to see that they already discovered Literature :(. But Rome hasn't got it yet. So i trade:
Literature from Korea for 11 gpt and 15 gold. Rome gets Literature and 10 gold for HBR. Germany (anarres) hasn't got it :). I can now build those nice horsies!

Turn 88: The AI is in the Middle Ages [eek] What am I happy to have a decent core and more landgrab opportunities. Anarres is far smaller than me and also backward. I WILL try something when I finish the build up phase. He's at war with Germany and I think it is not in is favour this soon. That must have slowed him down a lot.

According to the Demographics, I'm doing well:

You mean anarres is really some kind of Masochist? [???]

Aggie

He might have been unclucky with that war. That's my guess anyway.

I meant that you said that he is at with Germany, which seems kinda odd being Deutsch himself ;)

Aggie

Oh!! I meant to say that he is at war with Rome. But I see the the Maya joined the Romans.

Turn 94: A wounded curragh meets the Mongols and lands next to a barb galley. I also see a curragh of anarres.

The Mongols don't have Literature :) I buy Mathematics from them for Literature, 7 gpt and 7 gold.
Both the Mongols and Romans lack Construction and Currency. I see no way whatsoever to profit from it, I hope that the opportunity doesn't vanish soon.

This is a very weird world. There's a big patch of black to the west of me and anress and me are on the same island. Where are the other two civs???

Turn 95: The Mongols know Construction!!! (EDIT:) But I can't profit from it. My income is just not good enough.

Turn 97: I settled a few cities and I am able to make the deals after I first assigned all citizens to be taxmen and set sliders to 0%. I make 54 gpt this way. (END EDIT)

-I buy Currency from Korea for 33 gpt and 5 gold.
-The Mongols give me Construction for Currency, 16 gpt and 15 gold.
-Korea gives me Mysticism for 5 gpt and 64 gold.
-Rome doesn't offer me the remaining techs for the two I have :( But they are weak, and when I renegotiate peace I am succesful [dance] They offer me CoL, Map Making, Polytheism and 35 gold for Currency and Construction!!
-I get Feudalism for free [party]
-The Maya and Korea have Engineering and Republic.
-Korea gives me Engineering, Republic, 964 gold 1 gpt for Feudalism. The Mongols get Engineering for 7 gpt and 16 gold. I go into anarchy now. I only draw 4 turns :) I have 1016 gold and lose 58 gpt after reshuffling my citizens. The price for tech advancement is high, but needed imho.

Anarres lacks the following techs. I haven't met the Dutch and Celts, but F7 shows that the Celts are still in the ancient age. Anarres may still make a tech jump with Republic:

My lands and the strange map as I know it:

The powergraph and the declining Roman empire. My neighbours have a few size 1 cities without border expansion sout of me :) I just wait what the AI will do with it. They are at war with everyone but me.

Turn 98: anarres tells me that barb horsemen killed a hoplite, two horsemen and my settler. [cry] I thought I had it well defended :(

Turn 101: These are the demographics now I'm in Republic:

Barbarians killed more units in my city :( Anarres still lacks Mysticism and Mathematics.

Looks like anar is practicing his "How to get out of a techhole" routine ;)

Aggie
01-07-2004, 22:56
That routine shouldn't be too difficult with a scientific civ :)

At turn 110 we are equal in tech. anarres is gaining land in the wars and has a stronger military than I have. I have been unlucky with barbarians in the last 20 turns, but all in all things are ok. I am now building up military to go to war vs Rome.
