Turn 20(?)

Beam and me are seafaring but we both got a non-shore
start from Sky (map maker). I thought my second settler
saw shores after moving the first turn but I was mistaken
as it was a lake! Now my third settler settled on the
shores in the east and the 4th settler will settle on
the shores in the west. I hope I will be in time to get
some monopoly contacts and hope Beam has the same
situation as me... Beam had a barb settlement in turn 5.
I spotted a barb camp with 4 barbs in it in turn 12. I
think the barb settings have changed in C3C because we
did not ordered raging barbs. I had this too in my game
against killer (very early barb camps (turn 10) all over
the place), in that one we were supposed to have roaming
barbs...

Anyway, my scout warrior got killed by barbs and all in
all my start sucks as I failed to have my second city on
shores (moved in the wrong direction). I hope I can make
it up soon. It is a demigod game with two settlers so I
probably will. Also it is the first attempt from Beam
higher than Emperor...

We are near turn 100 and lots have happened. Beam got an early SGL and
rushed the Glib instead of the Pyramids [eek] After that he just sit
back and waited for the civs to meet him. When I got to him he only
met his neighbours, the Dutch. Maybe he knows Greece too (havent met
them). I knew all the rest of the world and gained gold and techs. I
cannot find Greece anymore soon as all my curraghs have sonk or been
killed by barbs (5 total).

I built lots of cities and workers, warriors, nothing else. I have 28
workers (or so) and much more cities than Beam. Still I got two Maya
cities on my island. :( Beam island is very popular and he got lots
of AI's cities on it. I dont know what Beam is doing but he isnt
expanding fast. A few turn a Dromon showed up and scared me mucho as
I figured that he might have worked to a very early invasion but the
Dromon left. I bought HBR cheap and upgraded my 3 chariots. Now I
hurried to get the iron and upgrade some warriors just to be sure.
Last turn the Egyptians landed an elite warrior on my lands...

Beam is in anarchy right now. He will go for Republic but I am not
sure if he is ready for that as he has not much cities and lots of
units and his cities are not that big. I am sure he has lots of money
to deal with the prize but I think it is early. I can revolt to but
wait to get a little bigger first.

Anyway 8 turns ago I can a SGL and rushed the FP near Madrid. There
was no wonder avaiable and was planning the FP there anyway.

Too bad you ahd to use an SGL for just an FP [cry]
What about keeping him and after anarchy going into an Age of Science to leave Beam in the dust ?

Especially when you know that you can have more than one SGL at the same time!

Am I right that SGL's can rush Great Wonders but MGL's can only rush small ones??

Erikk: about waiting a while before revolting: iirc a loose rule of thumb is that the bigger the empire the longer period of anarchy you will get.

Yes MGLs can rush Small Wonders and SGLs Great and Small ones...

Yeah, I know but there was and would be no wonder avaiable for a while. We are alone on
islands so I expect no big wars thus the chances on a MGL are low. I decided that a FP would
be the best solution. I did benefit from it (a bit).

BTW I was sneak attacked by the Egyptians, after the Incas in theKiller game that makes two
out of 4 c3c games on 1 day! I think I will revolt now as my currency research has finished
and some AI got it 1 turn earlier than me...

About Beam: he has 3 Dutch and at least 1 Maya and 1 Indian city on his island.

Well, as you can see this does not look good, knowing that I have
been sneak attack by Egypt (with who I also had a ROP) this way some
turns ago. And yes, they did it in the in turn. FUCK! Anyway bribing
the Mayas is too expansive so I will sit out these attacks,,, I
revolted this turn so I can see how expansive my military is...

It has been quiet in this spoiler thread but here is a lot of info ;)

Turn 166: trading & being attacked all the time followed by worldpeace

After being ROP raped by the Egyptians and the Arabs things were not
quiet for long..., Beam showed up!

This game has been quite though. I was able to defend against Beams
attack but we reached MilTrad and I have no saltpeter!!!!! Right now
I am still average but it seems Beam is upgrading his left over
knights. He might try it again sooner or later. I made a mistake
going for Newton instead of Magnetism (privateers). I am now hoping
on a world war (which prolly starts soon as we have a very strong AI
with 3 sources of saltpeter (right now traded to other ai's). Another
possibility is taking it from the Mayans but they are my biggest
trading partner.

On the bright side, thanks to the trading I can still grow a be
productive. I have 2 luxes and trade 3 more. Beam has 1 only one lux
and trades some more. He is less productive and rich. I just need some
more time to get nationalism, then I will be save. Another good thing
is the fact that Beam has the Dutch as his neighbours, if they attack
him, he will be in big trouble, centainly when he is sailing to me!

We both are able to keep up in the research run, which is quite fast!
Beam lacks a lot of culture, he might be sticking to his original war
plans and ignores culture whatsoever, I mean, he already has his load
of Dromons! Damn, I need privateers!!!!

Pictures of the Beam invasion are in teh open thread and probably in
Beams spoiler.

BTW I had terrible dices against Beam and could have cut his knights
to pieces.., but no I lost lots of battles allowing him to attack me
from his beach heads! But in the decisive push on Tolede Beam
suffered from bad dices, resulting in him offering peace.

So what is the long term plan? Are you going to attack with Cavs or wait for Tanks?

ERIKK
21-01-2004, 20:54
The short term plan is staying alive and hoping no dromons with cavs show up!

The medium term plan is waiting for beams fleet to show up again and whipe it out with a small
fleet of privateers...

The long term plan is outscoring Beam on prod and gnp (doing it since his GL stopped giving him
cash, which he put in his 20 knights I guess). I think it will be a race to diplo civ if we
stay close on techs. Maybe 1 of us gets the ToE and can have 20 inf and arties ready for an
invasion. Otherwise an invasion would be stupid because the defender always has more troops
(assuming equal techs/units).

Update:

I was first to reach Newton and able to get fat and rich. The ai's drew RR and after 9 turns
researching on top speed I got a Nationalism monopoly. Again I traded and got ever fatter and
richer! I am currently researching Medicine in 6 turns. Beam just got to the IA and also drew RR.
He has no coal in his territorium but was able to trade 1 source. I upgraded all pikes to rifle
for 150 gold a pop, costing me about 2000 gold or so. But hey, no problemo if you run +300 or
+400 a turn (not sure how much).

My plans for Privateers were very stupid as you need saltpetre for Privateers... I still havent
any of course but with the refles and the money I feel save now. I havent had my GA yet. I am a
Democracy now and am building up my railnetwork.

Next stop is oil or rubber. Who has it and who hasn't... Only 4 out of 8 have coal and there are
only 6 sources of coal IIRC.

BTW the AI's use privateers, in the F3 I saw a captured (former) Greek privateer (prolly used to
be a caravel or so...)

Nice reading Erikk, I've been less expressive in my spoiler about the game but this recalls most of my feelings! About early exploration, I managed to sail the curraghs the wrong way skillfully, therefore the late contacts.

Finally the Knight attack, ALL Byz. resources were dedicated just to that, in the end I felt lucky some made it back! And didn't we call for a referee about the unit-blocking-shore issue? That sure was an exciting part of the game :)
