View Full Version : Someone make CDZ a logo!!

anarres

Or just steal one from somewhere else. ;)

See the 'snitz forums 2000' logo in the top left? I can replace that, but I have no graphics skill at all and little imagination.

If anyone can com up with a new logo I will be happy to replace it.

Any and all suggestions on what to use, or contributions accepted!

I haven't realy given it much though, anything would be good really...

Will you keep the white background?

It is difficult to blend an alpha-channel against an unknown background. There usually are some artefacts, if there is a drop-shadow and the back-ground color is changed.

So either, one couldn't use a drop-shadow/blend or one couldn't change background color.

Smalltalk,

I *was* interested in what you were saying, even if I didn't understand it. When I set up the forum I used a very good readme.

My background is programming and I have little knowledge of making webpages or graphical stuff. Tell me what you were saying in 'idiot-speak', and maybe I can learn something new. :)

smalltalk
13-03-2003, 22:29
Usually, an image is opaque. A rectangle.

What to do if you want a circle, for example against a white background?
-> Draw a green circle and make the outerior white -> e voila.

If you now change the white background to, maybe red, what will you see?
-> A green circle in a white rectangle against a red background.

Nowadays, images can be transparent.
Again, draw a green circle but now make the outerior transparent
-> this gives us a green circle against -any- background.
Please notice the sharp border of the circle.

The current logo also has a drop shadow, - no sharp borders- ,which blends from almost black to grey to white/transparent. You have to decide at design time, which background color you want to have or you'll get ugly artefacts.

Just put the logo on a blank page and change background color of the page. You'll see what I mean.

anarres
13-03-2003, 22:36
I get it now. :)

I will have to do testing then when I fuck with it. Got any suggestions as to what you'd like to see?

For a very crude first try, you might look at

http://212.227.80.187/extern/anarres.htm

Please note that the size doesn't match the original logo, and that a gif image will became very distorted if it is not displayed in its actual size.

anarres

smalltalk, I'm afraid I've given you the wrong idea. [:I]

I was thinking of a picture of something civ-related, as I am going to change the forum name to something without 'anarres' in it.

I was thinking about having an image showing thru the PBEM, but got stuck for ideas, it would have to be a fairly 'mono-colour' image though or u lose the definition of the actual word.

the colours used are just for clarity really - I'm happy to play around with it further/ try other suggestions/ ditch it, etc. let me know what you think.

DrAlimentado

It's still crude, no fancy drop shadows, no colors, no nothing.

We have a name at last!!! [dance]

So, now we are the Civ3 Duel Zone (CDZ), can someone come up with a logo?

I hope we get a few ideas going here first, so don't spend hours over it just yet. If we get several ideas that look good we will have a poll to decide which one to use.

Ah, and no shading to white please, we may want to change the background. ;)

the name Civ3 Duel Zone as background,

and how about 2 civ dudes (musketeers? swordmen?) on each side facing off for a duel? i'll knock up a rough thing to show composition.

DrAlimentado
29-05-2003, 21:28
hmmm, tank vs spearman. I did think of that first (cos the musketeers and swordmen images look crap [tongue]) but it wasn't as easy to get the right composition...

Still with a bit of resizing etc I've come up with these;

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/DrAlimentado/2003529201243_CDZ_Logo2a.gif

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/DrAlimentado/2003529212516_CDZ_Logo2b.gif

for the second one i put the tank behind the "duelzone" else it hides the letters too much. I tried resizing the lettering but it looked crappy...

col
29-05-2003, 22:11
I like the second one - maybe they could both be behind the letters.

Skyfish
29-05-2003, 22:14
second one better indeed
do a version with both in front
and a version with both behind

gotta see it to check it

anarres
29-05-2003, 22:45
It could be wider if you wanted...

I'm pretty sure you can put whatever size image you want at the top of the forum pages, as long as there is room for the stuff in the top right.

Sween
30-05-2003, 01:42
i like the top one of the last two. easier on the eyes then the one with the larger units. not as cramped. trust me, i went to school for that kind of stuff.

WildFire
30-05-2003, 13:56
I like either of the tank vs spearmen one. (make a poll)

anarres
30-05-2003, 14:00
Don't make apoll yet please, we should refine this until we come to a concensus or we can not all agree (in which case a poll would be useful).

Personally I think the image should be wider, I notice that the images by DrA are exactly the same size as the current image, this is not a restriction that needs to be followed.

digger760
30-05-2003, 15:01
i find the image harsh on the eye between the writing on the white back ground...somehow the way the words are shaded it draws my eye to that area.

anarres
30-05-2003, 15:18
Yep, I see it too now.

DrAlimentado
30-05-2003, 16:35
okay, working up some wider less-cluttered alternatives :), and I'll have a think about the shading too.

DrAlimentado
30-05-2003, 17:17
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/DrAlimentado/200353016441_CDZ_Logo3a.gif

here's a wider less cluttered version. I left the units big as with the extra space they all can fit easily enough, but I can do a small units version if wanted.

I also made the 'DuelZone' taller to hopefully reduce the glare from the civ3 shading going into a white BG... not sure if it really works though.
If anyone else feels their creative juices flowing please have a go! I just *really* want the rubbish snitz stuff gone asap!

btw - The more I look at the lettering the more I don't like it myself. I think I prefer the style that smalltalk used in his DIG versions so if he (or someone) doesen't show up and give us something I might have a go at lettering more like that.

Skyfish
30-05-2003, 22:37
Logos on white backgrounds are the most difficult to make, you know that.

I feel you need some kind of 3D effect on your lettering that will help it fit better with the units.
Some kind of shadow indeed.

Also you might want to have the initials C...D...Z... the same colour so that they come out much better.

Considering the term "Duel Zone", here comes a first shot! borrowing some glyphs from Firaxis and some images from Fred Zinnemans western "High Noon".

Gary Coopers rump has been cut in half, I hate it when this happens, but I found no better stills. Any ideas how to cover this up?

DrAlimentado
31-05-2003, 11:34
smalltalk - I like the cowboy theme a lot, the lettering's okay as well but I'm not so sure about the action buttons... what do others think?

What I think we ought to do is just really brainstorm ideas, it'd suit me if we had a shitload of different logos to look at and between all of us could pick and choose bits till we come up with something really top-notch. To this end I'd encourage everybody who has the least bit interest to come up with something, dosen't matter if it's rough we just need to get ideas down atm.

smalltalk
31-05-2003, 13:44
Yep, the buttons are a makeshift solution. There are lot too many of them, three or four should really be enough.

More important: they hurt the first rule of user interface design: never make anything look like a button, which cannot be used as a button - unless you really want to drive your unsuspecting users crazy!

I originally had the Firaxis-CivIII logo running from bottom to top, but then it came out too small. The font is too light to allow for this. Now it runs from left to right, and there is some white space left that needed to be filled.

That's what I originally had in mind, but it lacks the impact of the red Firaxis-logo.

BTW, let's have a loong deadline, I'm currently moving. Oh, sweat!

how about a picture of Napoleon's troups using the Sphinx as a practicing target? Culture and War, two major ingredients of this CIVIII game in one image! What a metaphor for the achievements of our civilization.

Or am I being too cynical here?

Thank god that the spearman is not fortified on hills, so we don't have to bring two tanks for a sure kill. :)

The perspective is still a bit off, there is room for improvment. Also there is a bit too much white for my taste. And aren't "Duel Zone" in fact two words?

smalltalk
04-06-2003, 23:58

And yet another theme: handshake after fight.

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/200364235328_shake3_small_flex_trans.gif

And, in regard to my above post: where would I find the image of a fortified spearmen? As far as I understand it, the pic should be in the .flc-file, and I'd need a flc-player to access it? Right?

DrAlimentado
05-06-2003, 02:10
The in-game pic would be in the flc yes. You can get flc-ster or sbb(?) from cfc utilities, I assume they'll let you export a single frame. If you have animation shop that does it too (but mucks up the file format for actually making civ flcs)

The pics I used are just gifs 'borrowed' from the cfc avatar list.

I think I'm leaning to the Tank vs Spear motif myself... but keep the ideas coming Smalltalk :D I'll add some more lettering variants myself in the next day or two to add to the mix.

I got my spearman/tank pics from the Civilopedia - usually IIRC C:/Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/CivIII/Art/Civilopedia. There they reside as a pcx-image.

Sorry for being late.

Here's an exploit of the Spearman/Tank theme. It comes in three sizes. Obviously, the lettering is still a matter of debate and quite exchangeable. I also feel, I should turn off map-gridlines.

small size:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/2003615233133_speartank_small_selective.gif

This image uses a selective palette. As far as I understand it, the image might be 'garbled' on Macs and Linux-machines. If anybody is browsing from this OS' would you please report?

medium size:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/2003615233431_speartank_medium_2.jpg
15.07*KB

big size:
Of course this size is best, but it is insanly large.
(I guess this will break the front page, but it would work with a smaller typography, like the black one above.)

I'm currently using Suse Linux, mozilla as browser. No problems here.

I like that theme, especially the those cool "in-the-pic" letters as shown in the first version. You may get rid of that funny "bubble" the tank is spitting at the spear,
perhaps it's possible to replace it by some better muzzle flash?

Shabbaman
16-06-2003, 10:02
Hey...

Just got an idea: if you'd ditch the obvious 'III', or just merge it with the 'CIV' (background, whatever) you can paste it really cool in the background, huge, with the mountain on front.
Like this: you see the huge CIV logo, then the mountain with the spearman and the 'duel zone' wrapped around them (I'm talking about the top picture, with the grid)
As a bonus, you could fix a huge rising sun in the background.

thanks for the info. This is great news to me. It means no more enforcing 216 colors in web-images. Doubtlessly, the days of VGA graphics adaptors are long gone ... :)

As far as the 'shooting bubble' is concerned: yeah it's a bit dumb. I will have a look into the rifleman/infantry-files, maybe there's a better muzzle flash.

Shabbaman:
good idea to drop the III. Maybe this forum is still around when there's a Civ IV ==> no need to change the logo.
On the other hand, I've already tried to put the civ logo behind the island, and it came out to cluttered for my eye, but maybe I didn't try hard enough. I will post something along this line soon.

----------------------------------------------------

The bad news: I'm just having problems with the hard disk on my main computer: a blue screen telling me every now and then that the OS was not able to write to C:/ :(
I guess I will have to install a new drive and re-install all programms [cry], but my intuition says it's the hd-controller that is broke, which would mean a new mother-board...
The good news: all data is backed up, and I can do the work on a notebook, thank If'ny.

Shabbaman: I guess this image has the most impact in regard to its size. All other images are quite bigger.

digger: ...and I thought, the first thing to do to make the pyramid theme more clear was to get rid of that font.

Please note, that it should be no problem to attach any font to any pic. I do have a few lettering variants of each pic laying around on my hd - just didn't care to post each idea in a endless variety. Also, the black fonts could be colored or any other colors changed.

Skyfish: oh no, stupid me didn't turn off the grids! I will do a version without them.

ProPain: Those last pics sure convey kind of a story. Looking at them sober, I feel they ain't so bad. But especially the last, big pic would need a bit of improvement with the vulcano and the sky.

A few random thoughts:

Screen size: I guess you are all using at least 800 x 600 screens? This is important to determine the maximum image size. The htm-code devides the top part of a CDZ-page into to cells with 50% width each. At 800x600 res the save size would be 400 pixel minus maybe 20 for browser window frame and htm-page border.

The good news is, I inserted larger images into the page, and they won't break the layout, just cause the links on the right side to line-break. So we don't have to pay too much attention to image size.

Still I feel it would be a good idea to preview the candidate logos in place - like I did with the first shootist image, so there won't be no bad surprises. Or maybe all candidate pics should be compiled into one single, large image for easy comparison?

Also, there is yet no transparency, some images even use a drop shadow. But this can be taken care of later when the need arrives.

PS:
I guess, I won't be back until sunday night or monday.

No reason to nuke 'Suriname', just happens to be the exposed landmass in the picture - which is one of my favorites. It's a real picture from a mars probe on it's way out and testing it's camera. I find it interesting to see the moon without the shadow of the earth on it, but not full. Awesome perspective, IMO.

Of smalltalk's I like the one Shabbaman posted, but I think it will be better without the grid too. Of course then we might not want the 'duel zone' to be in the gridded perspective either.

Some great ones here - time for a poll??

smalltalk
23-06-2003, 01:28
Good to see it's not yet a poll, 'cause here's some more. I hope it is not too confusing to see so many variations, but I guess you will speak up and help to sort out - you wouldn't want a poll with as many options as voters ...

First: the island with type but without grid. I guess, Gothmog has been right by anticipating that turning off the grid might damage the overall look of the pic.

Anyway, instead of redoing all above pics without grid - which still can be done if need be - I went for two new styles:

#1

This is the basic lettering, arranged according to DrA's initial proposal.

Adding some color and the map:

11.16*KB

While the mountain looks quite good, it uses up lots of space, so I changed it into pine forest.

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/200362312539_pine_right_binner_shrink.jpg

good design is, where there is nothing left to be taken away. So if I already got rid of the mountain, why not get rid of the map completely?

There has been a lot of talk about the spearman vs. tank phenomenon. It's kind of a running gag. But if you ask me, I will file a victorious spearman under 'heroic epic tales'. This always make me think of Conan/Schwarzenegger ...

My favourite units, the most precious ones, are rather settlers, leaders or early workers. They make my heart beat faster, while I won't mind the loss of a spearman or a tank.

This is borrowed from the Civ-interface:

There is also an buttonized version of this without drop-shadow.

BTW, I didn't think of one thing: there is not transparency for jpg-images, is there? So background color will be fix.

Hmm, maybe a black&white or a monochrome logo wouldn't be best for this site. I really want to see colors. Too bad that I got no colored stills from this movie. I remember to once have seen a colored film poster but could not find it on the net. And aren't shootists and sheriffs way off from Civ?

Anyway, the CivIII-logo in the initial versions is a bit lame; you might want to consider this:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/2003729213145_cooper3b.jpg
12.71*KB

or in site-color blue:

http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/2003729213228_cooper3.jpg

Or should I go back to black for "Duel Zone" [???]

smalltalk
07-08-2003, 23:26
Sorry, no MSN. Just don't know how to do this. [embarrassed]. I tried to start a program called Net Meeting, but it can't handle the proxy here. (Or I can't handle the right setup of the program?) Sometimes I'm just too ignorant about those modern telecomunications technologies...

Anyway, I do like the handshake-after-fight theme. Imho, of all my suggestions it has the best metaphor for this site. Alas it's black and white, it's small, and it doesn't have a big visual impact - so I'd discard it.

I'm not a fan of the all the island+spearman+tank motives either: noble ideas that failed, so I'd drop all of them as well.

I'd propose to use the image, where the spearman and tank is arranged like in DrA's post:
http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/uploaded/smalltalk/200362312222_SIMPLE.JPG

or maybe the Civ3-interface logo with the leader:

The lettering on the current logo (logo2.jpg) looks fantastic imho. I'm not totally sold on the tank/spear arrangement with it - I do really like the tank/spear motif but maybe they need rearranging or sumfink? Could be as simple as putting them on the same ground level, I'm not sure, they just look slightly 'disjointed' in some way to me. Smalltalk - for the record your doing a great job of juggling with our somewhat random requests so a big [goodjob] for your efforts and persevering with us :)

Oh Skyfish, I thought you'd hate huge bold capped fonts! [rolleyes]

I'll see what I can do to combine the island-picture with last week's logo.
Maybe you could give me some clues by commenting on the pics, where I changed the mountain into pine forest. First problem I can see with those, is that they are scaled down from the original size.

Changing the units' civ colors might take a while, if I have to go back to the flicster stage of the process. But probably it can be done in my image editor.

(The red an blue civs are rome, babylon, germany + ?, so I guess I could never depict an impossible constellation!)

I'm with DrA, the red vs. blue is a nice improvement and the black/white lettering has the biggest impact. The island will look better once the border is invisible, atm my eye wants the peak to be centered between the lettering and the border.

Civ IV is available now.

So I wonder what your thoughts about the logo are?

- stick to the Civ III? Like some football-clubs do: TSV 1860 for example.
- change it to Civ Duel Zone and thus meet all future civ-version with one logo?
- change it to Civ IV Duel Zone? I feel a logo with a version number looks better typographically than plain text.

@ smalltalk :
"Charlie don't surf", maybe used in a movie, but was it created by the Clash in Sandinista! in 1980 ? :) (great album)
To Akkaba : Lawrence of Arabia ? (good movie)
Dr. Strangelove : excellent ! [goodjob]

Me like the nuke pic, but I thought the war room pic was also good.
Would be interesting to see if you can make some with civduelzone on, and perhaps poll them.

No response from smalltalk so I decided to give it a try

I think I matched the font for "Civ" pretty well but I could not figure out how to outline the "duel zone" I also could not match the font exactly either.

This is however what I've come up with.

I'm more of a not-very-interested-in-football-in-general-but-then-keen-on-watching-international-matches type of guy. ;) And in France, people like me support any club from France doing well in international matches. Two years ago it was Monaco in C1 (they were beaten in the final !!) and Marseille in UEFA (beaten in the final too !). But Lyon is about to win the French championship for the 5th time in a row and are doing better and better in C1 each time. They are the team to support here, like Marseille was some 12-15 years ago. :)

What a pity. I noticed that at work the logo looks differently than it looks at home. Here I can still see that the original image doesn't merge with the black square properly. Must be because this monitor has higher brightness.

Same here. I actually found the version that shabba disliked to be better merged than the latest

Shabbaman

The second one is even brighter indeed, couldn't see that at home. But the white space to the left of the image is gone, a real improvement.

Very good indeed, another good CDZ tradition is some thoruogh discussion prior to poll, I mean about our identity, do we really believe in reincarnation, is the moon flat and made of green cheese, what is the name of Emperor Charles' dog etc.

@smalltalk, isn't this Dr. Strangelove final scene we're looking at?

I love the scene, that's why I looked at it first.

Personally I feel, the shuttle theme and the Black Knight theme might be worth a try as well.
