Diff: Emperor
Beam: Iroquois, I am Babylon, some though ai's opponents (see open
thread)
Map: standard, pangea, rest random
Raging barbs

Turn 12:
Nothing happened yet. I think Beam has already met an AI but was
unable to trade. He has not yet gotten a free city, I hope he will
never! My capital will be a settler factory without a granary.

See open thread for a pic.

Turn 58:

Beam is far ahead in tech, I am a bit bigger but having difficulty
with the raging barbarians. I lost 4 warriors already while Beam
seems to have no trouble at all... Lucky I can research the older
techs in 4 turns so I do not fear the 5 techs that I am behind.

Beam is at war with Persia who are far away from him. He set up the
Zulus agianst them. So at least one of his neighbours will be slown
down in expanding.

Got barbs from all the huts.

ERIKK ! [mad3]

Please dont irrigate *both* the wheat AND the cow ! Mine one or the other : it will give you the same growth and more valuable shields !

turn 65: for 8gpt, 15g and WM I trade 4 techs + TM with the Englsh. I
now lack MM. Only the English have it and they want to keep their
monopoly... I am even or ahead with all the others now and I think
with Beam too. Researching currency at max.
turn 67: I now lack Poly and MM. 3 civs have Poly, Beam probably too

As you can see I have the Persians (NW), Romans (N) and Celts (NE) as
my neighbours. I guess Beam must have the Chinese and Zulus as his. I
saw Chinese units west of Rome and Beam set up the Zulus against
Persia so figured that the zulus must be SE of Beam and the Chinese
at his east.

I am doing very well, I have 3 settlers within 4 turns and need 2 more
to fill up lands in tight building style. After that some workers and
then it is time for the creation of an army. The Celts will be the
target as they are closest and weak.

I have 8 cities (next turn 9) now. The AI is very weak: Celts and
Persia have 3, Rome, Zulus and Cina have 4 and English have 5 cities.

Turn 99:

In turn 96 currency was completed. Trading got me my missing MM and
Constr., luanching me in the MA. England and Persia joined me.
Unfortunally Persia got the same MA tech as me (Engineering). There
are no other sci civs so no trading for a while (except when Beam
trades his Republic once he has it. He must as he lacks Constr. and
Curr.). Now all but Beam and Celts are in MA.

Researched Feu. for a few turns on 60% but dropped it to 10%.
Currently upgrading reg warriors to swords. The Celts are bound to
finish the GL by now (30 turns ago they switched from Oracle to
GL, at that time Oracle was due in 17 turns... Al other civs started
the GL at a later time from scratch. Once they have it I will take it
from them. So I am building spears to release the warrios for
upgrading and transport to the Celts, and vet horsies. Meanwhile
Persia is still at war with Beam, China and Zulus. Persia has been
fighting for ages now...

My tactic has been growth and happiness. With all those cows in the
neighbourhood I focused on workers and settlers. Did not build any
city improvement until the last settler was done. Outer ring cities
are still set on workers. Inner ring cities have barracks and there
are also 4 temples build at this time (and that will stay so for a
while). Also very important: I have been micromanaging everything
and every turn!!!!

I also have the WM finally, after staying in the dark for 96 turns!

In turn 102 the Celts finish the GL, in turn 105 I attack with 9
horses and 5 swords and 7 swords underway. In 3 turns I capture 1
city (the incense city) and raze 2 and capture 2 settlers. The Celts
sneaky settle another town up north. The Celts are very, very weak!

Turn 110 Entremont falls. It all went so fast that I did got only 1
elite for leader fishing! These ai's are the ones who suffer from
the raging barbs I guess, as they live near the jungles... Still it
sucks that they are so weak!

Turn 127:

After some good progress against the Romans the advance was stalled
in a terrible RNG turn. Almost all my reg sowrds died against
promoting Roman spears... I rushed some temples near the Rome and
cut off the roads towards their capital. Now all cities stopped
resisting.

As you can see my 'powerfull' army is now lean and mean... [coool]

Meanwhile Beam left my terrorist warrior alive and is building his
road around my warrior. We will see if there will be more options for
terrorist activities! [evil]

turn 138"

The fucking Persians did a SENAK attack! (;)) Of course I saw it
coming and hurried 3 horses and a spear in the city I still had my
doubts if I could hold it against 4 archers (3 reg, 1 elite). I
messed up the turn before sending a vet spear in the jungles next to
the city. [rolleyes] That was stupid bcoz of course I had bad dices
and lost all untis! [mad] Losing the city means losing a lux one
turn and losing 3 horses means not be able to upgrade to them knights!

This was a bad turn!

Just be thankful its archers and not immortals coming at you. The city should be Ok to retake. Out of curiosity, why rush horses as defenders?? Wouldnt swords have been better - or spears. Or walls?

ERIKK
11-12-2003, 22:29
I meant hurrying the horses to that place (they move the fastest). Not rushbuild them. The swords
were further in the north and the vet spear that could make it in time went into the jungles
bcoz I misclicked. The city had a vet spear defending it already. I will retake it indeed but
losing the horses sucks big time.

col
11-12-2003, 22:33
Ah - now I understand. That makes perfect sense. But the horses need to attack not be attacked. Better to keep them outside the city, outside archer range, let the city be taken then retake it with the horses. Not worth trying to defend it.

ERIKK
11-12-2003, 22:49
Yeah I know, I counted a bit on my spear but it died immediately. It was a stupid move and turned
out bad.

11-12-2003, 23:13
If you put the spear in the jungle by accident I wouldn't consider it cheating if you just replayed the turn.

ERIKK
11-12-2003, 23:32
I know but I did not wanted to play ot over again. Normally in such a situation I probably
reloaded bcoz if misclicking is reason I dont consider it reloading too.

I just counted on my luck. Sometimes 1 or 2 archers attack and the rest walks away if the spear
stays alive when a city has lots of units in it (reasoning they wont be able to capture it).

Turn 152:

Research is going very slow. I get the techs from the Chinese
but they are slow. Beam doesn’t do that much research himself.
The English have Theology and Gunpowder, Beam lacks
Invention and recently got Chivalry (finally) So, I earn 150 gpt
(already for lots of turns now) on 10% research on Gunpowder
atm. The money is being spent on aqueducts and temples in
cities who need it, barracks in border towns and courthouses
in former Celtic and Roman lands. Right now I think more than
40% of the conquered cities have one now and manage to
squeeze out 3 or 4 non wasted shields, making them able to build
temples and libraries fairly quick. My core cities have all
improvements (including coliseums) and are building knights.
Almost all shore towns have harbours and all core lands are
developed I am ruling on the F11 screen since the beginning
of the game and even now Beam has the Pyramids I am still #1
on population and family size (that is the one the counts growth,
right?)

My only concern is the fact that Beam is stronger in military power
but he seems to be happily busy doing his ‘adventure’ in Persia. I
don’t mind as I see myself attacking him with cavs once I get them
which will probably be earlier than Beam. If he does attack me now
he might be able to raze some former Roman cities but I will be
able to rush lots of pikes or knights.

And oh, in 6 turns I will have the FP in the city west of Babylon.

I think I've seen this pattern of game before ;)

Map 153:

As you can see, if distance comes in play I will have a slight
advantage... It will be difficult to defend Persepolis if he
decides to protect Ravenna too. I am walking my knights all over
the border just to keep the pressure on Beam, keepong him worrying
about his captured towns hoping that he leaves the rest of Persia
alone.
