I know Denekamp is a heavy burden on your mental health, but when you start formatting your HD I think some professional help is in order. ;)

Good luck with the reinstall, last time I tried I fried my HD and ruined it permanently.......

Aargh! Just as I got nothing to do...

Matrix

Sorry...

But talking about "Aargh!"... I wrote all my files I wished to keep on cd's, at least, that's what I thought, but four out of seven weren't written at all! [cry] I used the two other computers in this home for the job, but apparently the Nero on my brother's pc only wrote it into an image file. [wallbash]

A few things among the things I miss now: all my savegames current and scenarios I've made (luckily the last ones are also on my homepage ;)) and all logs of all kinds of games!

I'll be on holiday from august 10th till 19th.

First day we'll go to Canterbury to stay there.
Second day we go to Cambridge, watch the city and stay there as well. I'd love to meet anarres there, but since he's not around here anymore he doesn't respond to my e-mail as well. :(
Third day we'll go via Oxford to Hawkesbury where we've reserved a cottage, which will be our operating base. From there we'll visit Cardiff, Bath, Gloucester...

England was much prettier than expected! [king] Especially Oxford and Cambridge impressed me: in Oxford you're overwhelmed with beautiful old academic buildings! [eek] Too bad you have to pay for every building you visit though. The Cambridge university had less but even more beautiful buildings. ;)

The Welsh mountains were also beautiful! Large bare slopes with only grass, bushes and sheeps. A classic example of extensive animal husbandry.

my favs:

Friday
Soulfly!!
Dragon Force (only for the GH3 song [lol])
The gathering

NO Dream Theater fan myself but irc Matrix is.

Saturday
Hatebreed
Lacuna Coil
Monster Magnet
Death Angel [worship] (their Act III album is brilliant)
Mastodon

I've heard VOlbeat is nice as well, havent heard it enough myseld though. Korn is ok too imo. Slipknot should be avoided at all cost

[B]Sunday
Sick of it all
Suicidal Tendencies

Two great hardcore bands, although suicidal has had it's best days after Robert Trujillo left to join Metallica. Sick of it All is brilliant though.

These are the bands we're planning to see. The bold ones are our favorites and must-sees.

Friday
The Gathering
Blind Guardian
Heaven & Hell*
Dream Theater
*: Perhaps not so that we can get a better view to Dream Theater, because Blind Guardian and Dream Theater are on the same stage anyway. FYI, Heaven & Hell is Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio instead of Ozzy Osbourne.

Saturday
Mastodon
Korn
Lacuna Coil (at the expense of Volbeat)
Slipknot

Sunday
Trivium (though not very familiar with them)
Disturbed (ditto)
Epica
Nightwish
Children of Bodom

Lot's of empty spaces in between, but I trust we'll get a folder with info and descriptions of the bands, so we'll pick something then. By the way, Sick Of It All is thrashmetal, isn't it? I'm not really a fan of that...

Here is a musical report of Graspop.

Friday
14:00-14:40 - Lauren Harris - The stunningly beautiful daughter of Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, what according to the little book might have been the two reasons she got a recording contract. But the music was easy to swallow. Sort of standard classic rock, so not very special.
14:50-15:30 - Firewind - „We'd like to dedicate this next song to the King of Pop, who died last night, Michael Jackson.” WTF?!? http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/eek.gif We didn't know anything up till then!
15:35-16:25 - Dragon Force - Nice cheery and upstirring music with no less than six band members who ran in all directions (except for the drummer of course) and were actually showing off too much.
19:10-20:05 - The Gathering - Still my favorite band and now with a new singer: Silje Wergeland (previously with Octavia Sperati). We were right at front which came at the expense of the sound quality. But it was actually quite a good performance. Ze let us hear their typical floating groovy songs as well as a few heavier once (Leaves among them), but no quiet ones. Ok, Wergeland is actually pretty good, but still no one has such a beautiful voice as Anneke van Giersbergen.
20:15-21:15 - Blind Guardian - They have eight albums of which I only have #5: Imaginations From The Other Side. And they actually played no less then three songs of that. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/grin.gif For the rest it was a pretty good performance. I really need to learn more from them, cos their music is just up my alley, and Marianne's even more! By the way, the stage wasn't decorated as beautiful as their album covers make you think. The singer notably looked like your average family man.
21:20-22:35 - Heaven & Hell - This is Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio as singer instead of Ozzy Osbourne. And they were goood! Classic rock at its best. Just when we decided to leave to get a good spot for the next act they started to play the song Heaven & Hell and then also a long version. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
22:40-23:55 - Dream Theater - Of all acts that weekend we enjoyed them the most! Oh, those guys are so good. LaBrie was in good voice and able to reach the higher tones this time. The other four are always good anyway. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/wink.gif But it wasn't just technical fiddling, which is the most heard complaint about DT, but it was played with feeling and emotion. Especially the song Beyond This Life (long song from Scenes From A Memory). John Petrucci (guitarist) and Jordan Rudess (keyboardist) also played a jam session. This was technical fiddling, but fun nonetheless. Rudess had a weird short keyboard round his neck (like a guitar) with only two octaves, but with two buttons at the side with which he could change the octave with his left hand.
0:00-1:30 - Mötley Crüe - They failed to hold our attention. After Dream Theater they could only disappoint us anyway, so we went to bed.

Saturday
12:00-12:40 - Manic Movement - Woh.
13:30-14:15 - Negurä Bunget - We were tired due to a second bad night's sleep, so we listened to this while sitting at the side of the marquee. That or the fact that they used a couple of weird analog instruments made it sound pretty off key. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/ack.gif But still the idea was nice and I'll go search for some of their stuff. „Negurä Bunget” is old Rumanian for „black foggy forest.” It's black metal with a spooky layer. The giant back screen showed appropriate images of misty forests and flocks of birds.
14:20-15:05 - No Use For A Name - Not impressive.
15:10-16:00 - Mastodon - Oh, what a joy! These guys are so good. The show wasn't really a spectacle, but that's because the complexity of the music doesn't leave much room for improvisation and running around. But there's no need, the music speaks for itself. There was quite a large mosh-pit, but we were at the side of the right section (thus close to the middle), so it didn't bother us. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Anyway, this was the highlight of the day!
16:05-16:50 - Legion Of The Damned en Parkway Drive - Both heard and rejected.
18:00-18:50 - Duff McKagan's Loaded - The book said: "The name of Duff's accompanying band should be taken with a considerable pinch of salt. It's highly unlikely we'll find the bassist in an intoxicated state. Since his addiction to alcoholics cost him his life by a whisker in 1994, the tree-tall musician is as dry as a bone. As such he survived thirteen years of membership of Guns N' Roses and the turbulent period with Velvet Revolver that followed." The music was also very Guns N' Roses-like and pretty good!
18:55-20:05 - Journey - The greatest discovery for us on the festival. We didn't know them, but I definitely like to hear more of them! Melodic progressive hardrock with a short inexhaustible Filipine singer, who by the way started as a Journey-tribute singer (Since the original singer and frontman of Journey, Steve Perry, had left they always missed something, according to the book).
21:10-22:20 - Korn - Heard bad things about them - "they're over their peak" - but that is unjustified. They had a lovely inflaming performance. Here we too wanted to leave early and so I suspected we'd miss Freak On A Leash, because they use to play such lone hits at the end to keep the people for as long as possible. But luckily they played it halfway. Live that song *works*! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/rockdevil.gif
22:25-23:25 - Lacuna Coil - Yet another wonderful show! I happen to know their entire discography, which makes it more enjoyable anyway. But they were incredibly enthusiastic and enthusing. The female singer wasn't that good in voice, though. Strange fact is by the way that they have a male and female singer who don't play any other instrument. The style is pop-like gothic metal, by the way.
23:30-1:00 - Slipknot - Good show, but what a freaking horrible music! Sort of a contest who can bash his instrument the hardest. No, this time we elected (an attempt to) a longer night's rest again.

Matrix
30-06-2009, 18:00
Sunday
11:25-12:05 - The Reckoning - Brainless pure black metal, to wake up so to speak. And whoops, forgot our earplugs, so while Marianne went to get them I was allowed to enjoy them a bit longer http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/undecided.gif to miss precious minutes of...
11:30-12:10 - UFO - Ah, much better! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/smile.gif This band, allowed to play on the main stage of this metal festival doesn't even qualify for hard rock. I don't know how to label it otherwise (besides plain 'rock'), but it ran nicely and was quite relaxed.
14:30-15:15 - Eths - French metal band with a sweet cutie as singer who availed herself of her mother tongue when...grunting. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/twitch.gif The book told about the "occational darned sensual voice", but that was *very* occational. Fine music though, but a bit too spicy for us at that time. (i.e. we were tired and already heard so much comparable noise.)
16:15-17:15 - Chickenfoot - Vocals: Sammy Hagar (Van Halen), bass: Michael Anthony (Van Halen), drum: Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitar: Joe Satriani! A varied collection and that was noticeable. Especially Satriani's qualities I enjoyed a lot! But other than that it was the cheery, light-hearted and mildly humorous character that appealed to me a lot. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
18:15-19:15 - Disturbed - Marianne didn't like it, but for me it was another great discovery! Very distinct rough metal. Especially the rhythmic staccato vocals appealed to me a lot! The singer was also very able to whip up the audience, which caused a considerable mêlée. One of their inventions is the 'wall of death' which was applied here as well: the audience in both sections were ordered to split up in two halfs (and shove) and when the music made a dash for it they were to smash onto each other! We were behind both sections with our backs against a barrier on which we were allowed to sit (unlike at Pinkpop), so we had a nice view on this scene. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/LOL.gif
19:20-20:15 - Epica - Pure gothic metal. And wow, how they have grown! They were better than After Forever has ever been. The announcer said appropriately: "Every year these 'northern neighbours' visit this festival they are higher on the billing. That can only be a good sign." And so it was. Amazing performance!
20:20-21:50 - Nightwish - The biggest disappointment of the festival. The new singer simply doesn't have it. The fact that she has to sing the older songs one octave lower than Tarja Turunen did is just a major letdown. The jokes weren't rehearsed, which of course made it more authentic, but also more amateuristic and gawky. The way they tried to stir up the audience was clumsy and unfruitful (though dutifully they did what they were told to do). The flame-projectors and fireworks were spectacular, though. They were done fifteen minutes early and the way they said goodbye to the audience implied there was chance of an encore, but the people left en masse, including a Nightwish banner holder.
21:55-22:55 - Children Of Bodom - We were exhausted, so we watched this from a distance. Good energetic and technically edifying music. Somewhere at the end they started to play The Final Countdown which stirred up the audience quite a bit (me including), but quickly the singer broke it off: "Wait, wait, wait... The Final Countdown?! What the fuck is this?” And after a stupid argument with the keyboard player they played a song of their own which ought to have been much better, but in reality wasn't actually. Listening to the audience that wasn't a very tactical move. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/LOL.gif
23:00-00:30 - Marilyn Manson - Actually I detest that guy - to shock is not a goal on its own - but it was the final act. And actually it was ok. But after three songs we packed it in.

On the first day already Graspop ('grass pop') transformed into Haypop and into Sandpop. Upflying sand, small enough to breath. What you picked out of your nose was coal-black. It was bloody hot and we hardly had a place in the shade to rest. At night it became cold, but the very next morning you melted out of your tent. The last night was the fourth night in a tent. I went to bed with fever and got up with fever. Then I still had to travel seven hours by train to Groningen. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/undecided.gif In conclusion it was a festival with lots of great music, but extreme circumstances. I might've preferred three days of rain. At least then the grass remained green.

Our musical taste matches on general terms, but I think such a festival shows exactly where it differs: I prefer more melody. I went to Lacuna Coil while you would've watched Volbeat. Same goes for Epica vs. Anthrax or The Gathering vs. Soulfly, I reckon.

By the way, you're right about the wall of death. I read it in the book and when I saw Disturbed organise one I concluded I read it in their paragraph, but now I checked and it's stated in Sick Of It All's paragraph. ;)

I was just kidding with that remark, but I agree when you see there still is quite a bit of difference in our preferred metal genre. Which just shows there's a lot more to loud music than people generally think.

Lacuna coil vs Volbeat, dunno could have gone both ways. Never seen Lacuna Coil and I really like there first album.
Epica vs Anthrax, both not really my favorites
The Gathering vs Soulfly, Soulfly hands down. I think the Mandylion CD is brilliant but the other gathering CD's didnt really grab me that much. Soulfly however is a totally different story :)

Wouldn't have missed Sick of it All for the world though. And Suicidal and Hatebreed are really top notch as well

X-post :)

Nice pics, nice hairdo. I totally understand the Lauren Harris remark now.

Some extra remarks:

- if you're into grunting girls be sure to check out Arch Enemy, you've never heard something like that before I assure you.

- UFO, my god. I bought some of their records when I was in elementary school. Where are their wheelchairs?? BUt their 'Strangers in the Night' live album comes recommended.

And about Slipknot :

Told you so, to be avoided at all cost:p

I'm assuming that it's no surprise that I've heard of very few of these bands.
RE: Arch Enemy....that certainly was unusual.

It is unusual, even more when you realise that's a female singer.

Tuomiokirkonkatu 19, 33100 Tampere, Finland (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Tuomiokirkonkatu+19,+33100+Tampere,+Finland&sll=61.498335,23.769865&sspn=0.011263,0.038581&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Tuomiokirkonkatu+19,+33100+Tampere,+Finland&ll=61.497188,23.77038&spn=0.011264,0.038581&z=15) for the next three months.
In de bottom right corner you can see "Tampereen yliopisto", which means "University of Tampere". That's on walking distance. :)
The city centre is on 0m distance. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/jump.gif

Only downside is, it's now -22°C. But that's ok, as long as you don't make long walks.

Here you can see the weather of Tampere (http://www.fmi.fi/weather/local.html?kunta=Tampere) of the last 24 hours. As you can see (at this moment) the temperature can change quite rapidly and without day-night rhythm.

-22 is alright. Give yourself 10 days max and you'll bee fine.

Lots of snow on the ground?

Great pictures, especially is intriguing that you are the only man in that corridor of yours. [;)]
